Book Synopsis Thurston's Work on Surfaces (MN-48) by : Albert Fathi
Download or read book Thurston's Work on Surfaces (MN-48) written by Albert Fathi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed exposition of William Thurston's work on surface homeomorphisms, available here for the first time in English. Based on material of Thurston presented at a seminar in Orsay from 1976 to 1977, it covers topics such as the space of measured foliations on a surface, the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space, the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface homeomorphisms, and dynamical properties of pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphisms. Thurston never published the complete proofs, so this text is the only resource for many aspects of the theory. Thurston was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 1982 as well as many other prizes and honors, and is widely regarded to be one of the major mathematical figures of our time. Today, his important and influential work on surface homeomorphisms is enjoying continued interest in areas ranging from the Poincaré conjecture to topological dynamics and low-dimensional topology. Conveying the extraordinary richness of Thurston's mathematical insight, this elegant and faithful translation from the original French will be an invaluable resource for the next generation of researchers and students.

Download or read book Moduli Spaces of Riemann Surfaces written by Benson Farb and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping class groups and moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces were the topics of the Graduate Summer School at the 2011 IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute. This book presents the nine different lecture series comprising the summer school, covering a selection of topics of current interest. The introductory courses treat mapping class groups and Teichmüller theory. The more advanced courses cover intersection theory on moduli spaces, the dynamics of polygonal billiards and moduli spaces, the stable cohomology of mapping class groups, the structure of Torelli groups, and arithmetic mapping class groups. The courses consist of a set of intensive short lectures offered by leaders in the field, designed to introduce students to exciting, current research in mathematics. These lectures do not duplicate standard courses available elsewhere. The book should be a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers interested in the topology, geometry and dynamics of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and related topics. Titles in this series are co-published with the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. Book Synopsis Combinatorics of Train Tracks. (AM-125), Volume 125 by : R. C. Penner
Download or read book Combinatorics of Train Tracks. (AM-125), Volume 125 written by R. C. Penner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measured geodesic laminations are a natural generalization of simple closed curves in surfaces, and they play a decisive role in various developments in two-and three-dimensional topology, geometry, and dynamical systems. This book presents a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the rich combinatorial structure of the space of measured geodesic laminations in a fixed surface. Families of measured geodesic laminations are described by specifying a train track in the surface, and the space of measured geodesic laminations is analyzed by studying properties of train tracks in the surface. The material is developed from first principles, the techniques employed are essentially combinatorial, and only a minimal background is required on the part of the reader. Specifically, familiarity with elementary differential topology and hyperbolic geometry is assumed. The first chapter treats the basic theory of train tracks as discovered by W. P. Thurston, including recurrence, transverse recurrence, and the explicit construction of a measured geodesic lamination from a measured train track. The subsequent chapters develop certain material from R. C. Penner's thesis, including a natural equivalence relation on measured train tracks and standard models for the equivalence classes (which are used to analyze the topology and geometry of the space of measured geodesic laminations), a duality between transverse and tangential structures on a train track, and the explicit computation of the action of the mapping class group on the space of measured geodesic laminations in the surface.

Book Synopsis The Quadratic Isoperimetric Inequality for Mapping Tori of Free Group Automorphisms by : Martin R. Bridson
Download or read book The Quadratic Isoperimetric Inequality for Mapping Tori of Free Group Automorphisms written by Martin R. Bridson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors prove that if $F$ is a finitely generated free group and $\phi$ is an automorphism of $F$ then $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ satisfies a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. The authors' proof of this theorem rests on a direct study of the geometry of van Kampen diagrams over the natural presentations of free-by-cylic groups. The main focus of this study is on the dynamics of the time flow of $t$-corridors, where $t$ is the generator of the $\mathbb Z$ factor in $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ and a $t$-corridor is a chain of 2-cells extending across a van Kampen diagram with adjacent 2-cells abutting along an edge labelled $t$. The authors prove that the length of $t$-corridors in any least-area diagram is bounded by a constant times the perimeter of the diagram, where the constant depends only on $\phi$. The authors' proof that such a constant exists involves a detailed analysis of the ways in which the length of a word $w\in F$ can grow and shrink as one replaces $w$ by a sequence of words $w_m$, where $w_m$ is obtained from $\phi(w_{m-1})$ by various cancellation processes. In order to make this analysis feasible, the authors develop a refinement of the improved relative train track technology due to Bestvina, Feighn and Handel.
Download or read book History of Topology written by I.M. James and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-08-24 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology, for many years, has been one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Although its origins may be traced back several hundred years, it was Poincaré who "gave topology wings" in a classic series of articles published around the turn of the century. While the earlier history, sometimes called the prehistory, is also considered, this volume is mainly concerned with the more recent history of topology, from Poincaré onwards. As will be seen from the list of contents the articles cover a wide range of topics. Some are more technical than others, but the reader without a great deal of technical knowledge should still find most of the articles accessible. Some are written by professional historians of mathematics, others by historically-minded mathematicians, who tend to have a different viewpoint.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Topological Fixed Point Theory by : Robert F. Brown
Download or read book Handbook of Topological Fixed Point Theory written by Robert F. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in the world literature presenting all new trends in topological fixed point theory. Until now all books connected to the topological fixed point theory were devoted only to some parts of this theory. This book will be especially useful for post-graduate students and researchers interested in the fixed point theory, particularly in topological methods in nonlinear analysis, differential equations and dynamical systems. The content is also likely to stimulate the interest of mathematical economists, population dynamics experts as well as theoretical physicists exploring the topological dynamics.

Book Synopsis Pseudo-periodic Maps and Degeneration of Riemann Surfaces by : Yukio Matsumoto
Download or read book Pseudo-periodic Maps and Degeneration of Riemann Surfaces written by Yukio Matsumoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of the book studies pseudo-periodic maps of a closed surface of genus greater than or equal to two. This class of homeomorphisms was originally introduced by J. Nielsen in 1944 as an extension of periodic maps. In this book, the conjugacy classes of the (chiral) pseudo-periodic mapping classes are completely classified, and Nielsen's incomplete classification is corrected. The second part applies the results of the first part to the topology of degeneration of Riemann surfaces. It is shown that the set of topological types of all the singular fibers appearing in one parameter holomorphic families of Riemann surfaces is in a bijective correspondence with the set of conjugacy classes of the pseudo-periodic maps of negative twists. The correspondence is given by the topological monodromy.
