Wenn nun plötzlich durch Automaten vergleichbare Eigenschaften erzeugt werden können ("künstliche Intelligenz"), erschließt sich dem for schenden Geist ein neuer Weg zum Verständnis des Menschen: Nämlich über das Verständnis der Automaten. Viele überkommene Vorstellungen müssen revidiert werden. Die Frage ist: Kann man geistige Vorgänge durch Erkenntnisse an Automaten nicht verstehen, teilweise verstehen, ganz verstehen? Die häufig gegebene Antwort, daß die Erkenntnisse der Physik für den einen Teil geistiger Vorgänge zuständig seien, für den anderen je doch nicht, ist meines Erachtens ein schlechter Kompromiß. Man muß zwar zugestehen, daß unsere heutigen Erkenntnisse nicht aus reichen, um alles oder auch nur den überwiegenden Teil zu erklären, man sollte aber keinesfalls die Vermutung akzeptieren, geistige Vorgänge unterhalb einer kritischen Organisationshöhe könne man physikalisch erklären, oberhalb dieser kritischen Organisationshöhe sei jedoch eine "überphysik" zuständig. Solche Sprünge macht die Natur nicht. In diesem Buch werden die Grundbegriffe, die zum Ver ständnis moderner Automaten erforderlich sind, erklärt. In den ersten Kapiteln herrschen deshalb technische Erläuterungen vor. Hierbei ist eine leichtverständliche Darstellung angestrebt. Mathematische Formeln wurden weitgehend vermieden, dagegen sollen Bilder das Wesentliche veranschaulichen.

Computer vision has been an interesting theme in the field of artificial intelligence. The term "3D computer vision" is used if visual information has to be interpreted as three-dimensional scenes. 3D computer vision is more challenging because objects are seen from limited directions and some objects are occluded by others. In 1980, the author wrote a book "Computer Vision" in Japanese to introduce an interesting new approach to visual information processing developed so far. Since then computer vision has made remarkable progress: various rangefinders have become available, new methods have been developed to obtain 3D informa tion, knowledge representation frameworks have been proposed, geometric models which were developed in CAD/CAM have been used for computer vision, and so on. The progress in computer vision technology has made it possible to understand more complex 3 D scenes. There is an increasing demand for 3D computer vision. In factories, for example, automatic assembly and inspection can be realized with fewer con straints than conventional ones which employ two-dimensional computer vision.

However, because of the progress in computer, LSI, and VLSI technologies, we have now reached a stage when many useful processing tasks can be done in a reasonable amount of time. As a result, research and development activities in image sequence analysis have recently been growing at a rapid pace. An IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Computer Analysis of Time-Varying Imagery was held in Philadelphia, April 5-6, 1979. A related special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Anal ysis and Machine Intelligence was published in November 1980. The IEEE Com puter magazine has also published a special issue on the subject in 1981. The purpose of this book is to survey the field of image sequence analysis and to discuss in depth a number of important selected topics. The seven chap ters fall into two categories. Chapters 2, 3, and 7 are comprehensive surveys on, respectively, the whole field of image sequence analysis, efficient coding of image sequences, and the processing of medical image sequences. In Chapters 1, 4, 5, and 6 the authors present mainly results of their own research on, respectively, motion estimation, noise reduction in image sequences, moving object extraction, and occlusion.
