He was raised a Protestant but joined the Mormon Church in 1842. He migrated to the United States up the Mississippi River. He settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, where he worked as a stone mason on the Nauvoo Temple. Adams was present at a meeting after the death of Joseph Smith, the first president of the Mormon Church. "I heard a voice speaking, I was surprized and jumped to my feet expecting Joseph the prophet was speaking, having heard him often in public and private was acquainted with his voice. This was a strong testimony that the twelve apostles was the rightfull leaders of the church. And the mantle of Joseph had fell on Brigham Young." He migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then relocated to Parowan, Utah, in 1851. He writes about his mission and the problems with his family when he took a second wife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping biography of the English ship pilot who would become one of the most influential Westerners in feudal Japan. In 1600, English helmsman William Adams washed ashore in Japan and was interrogated by Tokugawa Ieyasu, Japan's most powerful warlord and soon-to-be shogun. Far from executing Adams as a pirate, Ieyasu made him one of his most trusted advisers. This biography traces Adams's rise from a humble pilot to a position of immense influence in Japan's foreign relations. It unravels the subsequent diplomatic maneuvers of the Western powers in the Shogun's empire and Adams's eventual downfall. The first full biography of Adams based on original Dutch, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese sources, In the Service of the Shogun includes much previously unknown information. Frederik Cryns tells the authentic story of Adams's checkered life in its historical context, taking us on a compelling journey into Adams's complex inner feelings and cosmopolitan heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This awe-inspiring book is a tribute to the perseverance of the human spirit. A House for the Most High is a groundbreaking work from beginning to end with its faithful and comprehensive documentation of the Nauvoo Temple’s conception. The behind-the-scenes stories of those determined Saints involved in the great struggle to raise the sacred edifice bring a new appreciation to all readers. McBride’s painstaking research now gives us access to valuable first-hand accounts that are drawn straight from the newspaper articles, private diaries, journals, and letters of the steadfast participants. The opening of this volume gives the reader an extraordinary window into the early temple-building labors of the besieged Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the development of what would become temple-related doctrines in the decade prior to the Nauvoo era, and the 1839 advent of the Saints in Illinois. The main body of this fascinating history covers the significant years, starting from 1840, when this temple was first considered, to the temple’s early destruction by a devastating natural disaster. A well-thought-out conclusion completes the epic by telling of the repurchase of the temple lot by the Church in 1937, the lot’s excavation in 1962, and the grand announcement in 1999 that the temple would indeed be rebuilt. Also included are an astonishing appendix containing rare and fascinating eyewitness descriptions of the temple and a bibliography of all major source materials. Mormons and non-Mormons alike will discover, within the pages of this book, a true sense of wonder and gratitude for a determined people whose sole desire was to build a sacred and holy temple for the worship of their God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. William Adams, of Dedham, Mass: And of the Rev. Eliphalet Adams, of New London, Conn A general subscription of inhabitants at Ipswich, in December, 1618, contains the names of William Adams and William Adams, Jun. William Adams died in 1661. William Adams, Jun. died in January, 1659. It may be assumed with probability that these persons were father and son. A comparison of other facts makes it also tolerably clear that William Adams, Sen. had three sons who lived to manhood, and probably left posterity, viz: - 1. William, who died 1659. 2. Nathaniel, ascertained by Farmer to be son of William, Sen. 3. Samuel, of Ipswich, 1665. (Vide Farmer.) The Rev. William Adams, an esteemed minister of Dedham (ordained 1673), was undoubtedly the son of William Adams, Jun. In a Journal, kept by him, and subsequently to be copied in this Memoir, he refers to uncles N. A. and S. A., who appear to have been the guardians of his minority. This corresponds with our statement of the family. He mentions also a brother by the name of John; and this allows us to proceed a step farther in our list. William Adams, Jun., who died 1659, left two sons, viz.: - 1. William. 2. John. The following Memoir will attempt to trace the line of the first named of these sons. William Adams was born 27 May, 1650. We have his own authority for this date. He does not say where this event took place; but in all probability it was at Ipswich. From an allusion in his Journal to his "grandmother Starr," it may be supposed that his mother bore that name; but nothing more respecting her family has been ascertained. If the foregoing statement of his paternity be correct, he was left an orphan at the age of nine years. His means were slender; but being exceedingly desirous of a liberal education, he was assisted by his relatives to enter Harvard College, and was graduated at that institution in 1671. He came from thence with the esteem and respect of his teachers, and with a character for integrity, learning, and piety, that gave a pleasing promise of future usefulness. Book excerpt: Joseph Smith had only one request of the publisher of the Chicago Democrat, to whom he directed his now-famous Wentworth Letter: ¿All that I shall ask at his hands, is, that he publish the account entire, ungarnished, and without misrepresentation.¿ In accord with that request, Opening the Heavens lets these foundational documents of key events in LDS Church history speak for themselves. The relevant passages are presented in their entirety, plainness, and veracity, according to established standards of documentary editing. Here are the historical documents for the key events of the Restoration in which heavenly elements were powerfully evident: the First Vision, the translation of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of the priesthood, the opening of the heavens, the outpouring of keys at the Kirtland Temple, and the mantle of Joseph Smith passing to Brigham Young. Such events are the backbone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The firsthand accounts contained in Opening the Heavens make it one of the most persuasive and influential Church history books you may ever read or own.
