Book excerpt: A book vigorous in style and earnest in tone; fitted to come home to the experiences of all who are willing to glance at the necessities and responsibilities of a higher life. "It is rather late in the day to recommend this volume. We suppose the majority of our readers are already familiar with its wroth; nevertheless, the minority, if they are now induced to obtain it, will thank us for at least calling their attention to its excellencies, and therefore we do so con amore. No theological library ought to be considered complete without 'Trench' and 'Arnot' on 'The Parables.' There are some points on which they differ…but as expounders of our Lord's parabolic teaching, we regard them equally as unapproachable by any other writers on the subject. Mr. Arnot is himself eminently a teacher 'by parables.' Those who have had the privilege of hearing him 'the modern Athens,' will remember how nails are fastened in a sure place by this master of assembles. Nature is made eloquent of truth. At the same time imagination is never suffered to run wild; logic always holds the reins. This combination of qualities, so rarely found, eminently fitted the writer to deal with 'The Parables of our Lord,' and as the result of his labours he has produced a standard work." -Rev. Charles Bullock, "Our Own Fireside," 1866 "Any publication from the pen of Mr. Arnot would be welcome, but especially one on the parables of our Lord. No man knows better than he, how to dress up good old Puritan truths in modern garments, and to use as seed, or as a foundation on which to build the intellectual spiritual treasures of the past….A lively imagination, acquaintance with nature, and a clear perception of its analogies, judgment, knowledge of dogmatic theology and Scripture history, and a general acquaintance with the condition, manners, and character of the people to whom they were addressed….Mr. Arnot possesses these to an extent in which perhaps they are seldom found in combination." -The Baptist Magazine, 1866 CONTENTS. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Darwin returned to Britain from the Beagle voyage in 1836, the most talked-about scientific books were the Bridgewater Treatises. This series of eight books was funded by a bequest of the last Earl of Bridgewater, and they were authored by leading men of science, appointed by the President of the Royal Society, and intended to explore "the power, wisdom, and goodness of God, as manifested in the creation." Securing public attention beyond all expectations, the series gave Darwin's generation a range of approaches to one of the great questions of the age: how to incorporate the newly emerging disciplinary sciences into Britain's overwhelmingly Christian culture. Drawing on a wealth of archival and published sources, including many unexplored by historians, Jonathan R. Topham examines how and to what extent the series contributed to a sense of congruence between Christianity and the sciences in the generation before the infamous Victorian "conflict between science and religion." He does so by drawing on the distinctive insights of book history, using close attention to the production, circulation, and use of the books to open up new perspectives not only on aspects of early Victorian science but also on the whole subject of science and religion. Its innovative focus on practices of authorship, publishing, and reading helps us to understand the everyday considerations and activities through which the religious culture of early Victorian science was fashioned. And in doing so, Reading the Book of Nature powerfully reimagines the world in which a young Charles Darwin learned how to think about the implications of his theory"--
