As such, providing occupational therapy practitioners with a comprehensive guide for practice with people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to be a primary goal of this best-seller. Recognizing that young children grow into adolescents and adolescents grow into adults, this updated edition includes additional content applicable to adults as well as incorporates the findings from the explosion of recent research in this area. Using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework as a guide, the 24 revised and new chapters provide the information occupational therapy practitioners need to work with individuals with an ASD in client- centered and occupation-based practice.

Book excerpt: This completely updated third edition of the award-winning Palpation Techniques is a beautifully illustrated guide with clear step-by-step descriptions that teach readers how to identify and distinguish between a multitude of underlying body structures, based mainly on palpation alone. A unique graphic technique using detailed drawings of muscles, bones, and tendons directly on the skin, which come alive in almost 900 full-color photographs along with complementary color illustrations, provides a solid understanding of the functional significance of each anatomic region. The previous edition introduced palpation techniques for the shoulder and included new photos and illustrations for the hand, hip, and foot. This third edition is upgraded with a chapter on the abdominal area and additional subchapters on further starting positions and palpation techniques of the shoulder, elbow, and hip/groin. Many new illustrations accompany these new sections. Readers will learn how to use: Palpation during physical examination to localize painful, injured structures (provocative palpation) Joints as critical landmarks in carrying out tests and guiding manual therapy techniques Palpation of peripheral nerves to localize and assess sources of dysfunction and pain Deep soft-tissue palpation to relieve musculoskeletal pain This outstanding book will enable physical therapy and osteopathy practitioners and students to refine their knowledge of practical anatomy further and thus optimize patient care.

Book excerpt: These guidelines from NICE set out clear recommendations, based on the best available evidence, for health care professionals on how to work with and implement physical, psychological and service-level interventions for people with various mental health conditions. The book contains the full guidelines that cannot be obtained in print anywhere else. It brings together all of the evidence that led to the recommendations made, detailed explanations of the methodology behind their preparation, plus an overview of the condition covering detection, diagnosis and assessment, and the full range of treatment and care approaches. There is a worse prognosis for psychosis and schizophrenia when onset is in childhood or adolescence, and this new NICE guideline puts much-needed emphasis on early recognition and assessment of possible psychotic symptoms. For the one-third of children and young people who go on to experience severe impairment as a result of psychosis or schizophrenia the guideline also offers comprehensive advice from assessment and treatment of the first episode through to promoting recovery. This guideline reviews the evidence for recognition and management of psychosis and schizophrenia in children and young people across the care pathway, encompassing access to and delivery of services, experience of care, recognition and management of at-risk mental states, psychological and pharmacological interventions, and improving cognition and enhancing engagement with education and employment.

Book excerpt: An essential guide to the highly recommended Floortime approach for treating children with any of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). From the renowned child psychiatrist who developed the groundbreaking Floortime approach for children with autism spectrum disorder, Engaging Autism is a clear, compassionate road-map for parents. Unlike approaches that focus on changing specific behavior, Dr. Greenspan's program promotes the building blocks of healthy emotional and behavioral development, showing that children with ASD do not have a fixed, limited potential, and may often join their peers to lead full, healthy lives. With practical advice for every scenario you may face with your autistic child at any age -- including sensory craving, overactivity, avoidant behavior, eating, toilet training, developing social skills and more -- Engaging Autism offers hope for families and redefines how we see children with ASD.

Book excerpt: This book presents a model of mental health treatment for children with serious psychiatric illnesses. The IICAPS (Intensive In-Home Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services) program, initially implemented by the authors in 1996, offers an alternative treatment paradigm for families. Adopted at thirteen sites across Connecticut, IICAPS has proven effective in reducing the need for inpatient and other institutional-based services. Intended for health providers and planners, this book addresses the service system issues that confront child and adolescent mental health providers today. The authors fully explain and outline the IICAPS treatment approach. They conclude with a discussion of some of the unresolved challenges related to home-based care for children with serious psychiatric disorders.

Book excerpt: Now in its fifth edition, this seminal textbook for occupational therapy students and practitioners has retained the comprehensive detail of previous editions with significant updates, including the recovery approach informed by a social perspective. Emerging settings for practice are explored and many more service users have been involved as authors, writing commentaries on 14 chapters. All chapters are revised and there are also new chapters, such as mental health and wellbeing, professional accountability, intersectionality, green care and working with marginalized populations. Chapter 11 is written by two people who have received occupational therapy, examining different perspectives on the experience of using services. This edition is divided into clear sections, exploring theory and practice issues in detail. The first section covers the historical, theoretical and philosophical basis for occupational therapy in the promotion of mental health and wellbeing. The second section examines the occupational therapy process, followed by a third section on ensuring quality in contemporary practice. The fourth section offers insights into issues arising from the changing contexts for occupational therapy including an analysis of the implications for occupational therapy education. The fifth section has eight chapters on specific occupations that can be applied across the varied settings which are covered in the sixth and final section. Book excerpt: Technical Foundations of Neurofeedback provides, for the first time, an authoritative and complete account of the scientific and technical basis of EEG biofeedback. Beginning with the physiological origins of EEG rhythms, Collura describes the basis of measuring brain activity from the scalp and how brain rhythms reflect key brain regulatory processes. He then develops the theory as well as the practice of measuring, processing, and feeding back brain activity information for biofeedback training. Combining both a "top down" and a "bottom up" approach, Collura describes the core scientific principles, as well as current clinical experience and practical aspects of neurofeedback assessment and treatment therapy. Whether the reader has a technical need to understand neurofeedback, is a current or future neurofeedback practitioner, or only wants to understand the scientific basis of this important new field, this concise and authoritative book will be a key source of information. .
