Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market and competition authorities operate in a complex environment with conflicting stakeholder demands. Balancing the various interests of the authority and stakeholder in an objective and impartial manner is strategic to achieving the goals of the legislation imposed. In a fresh approach examining the actions of an authority when a regulation is applied, Annetje Ottow argues the vital importance of the behaviour of authorities, focusing on five fundamental good agency principles: legality, independence, transparency, effectiveness, and responsibility, or, LITER. These principles provide agencies and those reviewing their actions with a framework for agency design and action. Combining theory and practice to provide insight into agencies' organization and behaviour, this book outlines and analyses behavioural issues using an ecosystemic method, addressing how independent agencies should be assessed, and which principles should apply. Using cases from the Netherlands and the UK, Ottow examines the key processes of authorities against the LITER principles, and opens the debate on 'how to regulate the agency'.

Book excerpt: Susan Strange was one of the pioneers of the modern study of international political economy and had a major impact on the way we now understand the global political economy. Always thoughtful and accessible, often contentious, sometimes highly provocative, for over thirty years she asked the key question of political economy; who benefits? This book brings together from a wide range of sources her most significant attempts to answer this question. It represents both an overview of Strange's thought and an important substantive analysis of international political economy.

Whether and how policymakers should address this issue is hotly debated. This note provides new evidence on the policy relevance of rising market power and highlights possible implications for the design of competition policy frameworks and macroeconomic policies.

Book excerpt: If your agency's future is tied to making stuff, then you're destined to be on a perpetual financial roller coaster. Someone will always make stuff less expensively than you can. We're entering the era of the authority. While you may already be sick of the phrase thought leader, the truth is there aren't that many of them in our industry. Thought leaders don't write content that any other agency could claim. Thought leaders don't write about anything and everything and thought leaders don't compete on price. And their time is now. Experts are afforded the highest level of confidence and trust because they have a depth of knowledge that can't be denied or easily replicated. Why wouldn't we capitalize on that, as opposed to writing generic marketing tip posts that look like every other agency's content? Agencies are at the cusp of a huge shift, and if you take full advantage now, you're going to be tough to catch. You can own an authority position that will future-proof your agency.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to International Political Economy Susan Strange, formerly University of Warwick. Professor Strange was well known for her unorthodox and stimulating views on the international political economy. Here she provides the student and scholar with a new model synthesising politics and economics by means of a four-faceted structural analysis of the effects of any kind of political authority (including states) on markets, and, conversely, of market forces on states. This refreshingly new framework of analysis is an ideal introductory text.

This is not like that. It is going to suggest to you a way to think about the politics of the world economy, leaving it to you to choose what to think.

Book excerpt: 'We live in an extremely controlling society in which authority has disappeared ... traditional authority is lapsing into brute force ... and we ourselves must take the first steps towards creating a new social order.' This was the trenchant diagnosis by Paul Verhaeghe at the end of his acclaimed book about identity, What About Me?Now he returns to investigate another aspect of our lives under threat: authority. In Says Who?, Verhaeghe examines how authority functions and why we need it in order to develop healthy psyches and strong societies. Going against the laissez-faire ethics of a free-market age, he argues that rather than seeing authority as a source of oppression we should invest in developing it in the places that matter. Only by strengthening the power of horizontal groups within existing social structures, such as in education, the economy, and the political system, can we restore authority to its rightful place. Whether you are a parent or child, teacher or student, employer or employee, Says Who?provides the answers you need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LARGE PRINT EDITION! More at LargePrintLiberty.com What can government do to enhance social and economic well being? Nothing, says Murray N. Rothbard. Power and Market contains the proof. It will inoculate the reader against the even the slightest temptation to invoke the state as a solution to any social or economic problem. It is ultimate manual for completely de-mystifying the myth of the state. This beautiful new edition is the first to truly do it justice. The Rothbardian claim is perhaps the most radical made in the history of political economy. But how can it be convincing? What must an author do to back up this claim? Here is what Rothbard did. He systematically classified every form of intervention into three types: autistic, binary, and triangular. Within each category, he discusses their ill effects, and does so with precision and insight. Free market scholars have been using and expanding on his insights for years. But in this book we have the source. He is like an expert house inspector examining the edifice of the state. Brick by brick, nail by nail, he shows that it is fundamentally unsound. The seeming edifice is really a house of cards. This book is the ideal answer to the person who says: "I favor free markets but...." and then proceeds to advocate some intervention they believe to be helpful. Rothbard shows that it is not helpful, no matter what it is. And he provides the logic for understanding how all forms of government aggression make society worse off. Some of the topics covered: price control, compulsory cartels, licenses, quality standards, safety precautions, tariffs, child labor laws, conscription, subsidies to unemployment, subsidies to employment, base-point pricing bans, conservation, antitrust laws, patents, public utilities, eminent domain, wage taxes, corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, property taxes, progressive taxes, the single tax, government ownership of anything, and all forms of government spending. Within each category he lays out the rationale for why the measure must fail.

Book excerpt: In May 2011, a new market conduct regulator, the New Zealand Financial Markets Authority, was introduced. It was announced by the Government as a "super-regulator" to replace the Securities Commission, resolving the perennial issue of the fragmented regulatory architecture made up of numerous regulators with overlapping functions and duties. However, the consolidation of responsibilities within the FMA was not as thorough as it could have been. As a result, the delineation between the functions of the FMA and the Registrar of Companies, the Serious Fraud Office and the Commerce Commission require clarification. Further, the ongoing extension of the ambit of the financial markets law will put additional pressure on the new regulator. Nevertheless, the reform was a great leap forward - the new financial markets law now provides for a coherent umbrella for all statutes that fall within the jurisdiction of the FMA.
