Book Synopsis Ancoratus by : Saint Epiphanius (Bishop of Constantia in Cyprus)
Download or read book Ancoratus written by Saint Epiphanius (Bishop of Constantia in Cyprus) and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epiphanius of Cyprus was lead bishop of the island from 367 until his death in 403, and he was a contemporary of several of the great church fathers of the patristic era, including Athanasius, Basil, and Jerome. He is well known among modern scholars for his monumental heresiology, the Panarion, as well as for his involvement in several ecclesiastical and theological controversies. Before he began to write his magnum opus, however, he had already completed the Ancoratus, an important theological treatise, written in the form of a letter to Christians in southern Anatolia. The Ancoratus addressed numerous theological issues, particularly in response to the continuous disputes about the divinity of the Son, the developing arguments over the divinity of the Holy Spirit, and the early quarrels over the Incarnation of Christ. In addition, he included his thoughts on proper biblical exegesis, the problematic theology of Origen, and the relationship of the Christian faith with Hellenistic culture. Epiphanius's convictions on these issues represented important contributions to the ongoing theological and cultural controversies of the late fourth century, but he has often been overshadowed in modern scholarship by the work of his more illustrious contemporaries. Because there has been no complete English translation of the Ancoratus to date, this volume adds significantly to the resources available for patristic studies.

Book Synopsis Jerome, Epistle 106 (On the Psalms) by : Michael Graves
Download or read book Jerome, Epistle 106 (On the Psalms) written by Michael Graves and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh interpretation of the nature, purpose, and date of Jerome’s Epistle 106 In this volume of the Writings from the Greco-Roman World series, Michael Graves offers the first accessible English translation and commentary on Jerome’s Epistle 106, an important work of patristic biblical interpretation. In his treatise Jerome discusses different textual and exegetical options according to various Greek and Latin copies of the Psalms with input from the Hebrew. Epistle 106 provides insightful commentary on the Gallican Psalter, Jerome’s translation of Origen’s hexaplaric edition. Jerome’s work offers a unique window into the complex textual state of the Psalter in the late fourth century and serves as an outstanding example of ancient philological scholarship on the Bible. Graves’s translation and commentary is an essential resource for scholars and students of patristic exegesis, biblical textual criticism, and late antique Christianity.
Book Synopsis Hebrew Study from Ezra to Ben-Yehuda by : William Horbury
Download or read book Hebrew Study from Ezra to Ben-Yehuda written by William Horbury and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Hebrew language has been a major preoccupation of many Jews and non-Jews since ancient times. This book fully illuminates this fascinating history. Substantial sections of the book deal with the Second Temple period, when Hebrew was cultivated alongside the Aramaic and Greek vernaculars; the Roman empire; the medieval period, with special attention to the Karaite Jews and their characteristic Hebrew, the Renaissance and early modern period, including the efflorescence of Christian Hebrew study in Italy and northern Europe; and the revival of Hebrew in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Europe, in Palestine under the British mandate, and in modern Israel. Experts in various periods collaborate to make this book a valuable introduction to an area lacking a comprehensive survey. --Wido Van Peursen, Bibliotheca Orientalis LVII No.5/6 (September-December 2000) "To find in one volume such a large sample of distinguished British scholars writing on a rather forgotten topic is doubtless a brilliant display of the state of scholarship on Jewish Studies in the United Kingdom at the end of the century, and it creates in the reader a sense of optimism." --Angel Saenz Badillos, Journal of Jewish Studies 52.1 (Spring 2001)>
