Mai 1945 Anfang der 50er Jahre aufkam. Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit ist folgende These: Identität geht nicht aus einem kulturellen Ursprung hervor, sondern erst das Bewusstwerden der eigenen Vergangenheit in Verbindung mit sich ständig transformierenden neuen kulturellen Codes, schafft Identität. Auf der Suche nach dem Ursprung der algerischen Identität entwirft Yacine in der allegorischen Verkörperung « Nedjmas » ein von der Kolonialgeschichte geprägtes Algerien. Es ist unzureichend, ausschließlich den aktuellen Zustand der algerischen Gesellschaft zu betrachten, wenn ihre Identität untersucht werden soll. Genauer gesagt steht die Suche nach Identität in Nedjma in einem engen autobiographischen Zusammenhang des Autors, der sein individuelles Einzelschicksal auf das Kollektiv der vier Protagonisten überträgt und Realität und Fiktion in Spannung versetz. Yacine geht von „einer vom Kolonialismus unbelasteten Geschichte“ aus, und begibt sich über die Kolonialpolitik der Franzosen, Widerstandsbewegungen bis hin zum aktiven nationalistischen Aufbegehren gegen die Kolonialmacht auf die Suche nach der eigenen Identität. In Bezug auf die Form stellt der Roman einen ästhetischen Wendepunkt dar, da Yacine die Grenzen zwischen Prosa und Poesie aufzeigt. In einem letzen Schritt wird die poetische Sprache und ihre Funktion bezüglich des Textes analysiert werden. Trotz der Schwierigkeit der Einordnung des Romans in eine bestimmte Gattung, soll im Folgenden zumindest die Klassifizierung als postkolonialer Roman problematisiert werden, bevor die Suche nach Identität in Verbindung mit der daraus resultierenden Beschäftigung mit der Vergangenheit Algeriens unter Zuhilfenahme konkreter Textstellen analysiert wird.
