Book excerpt: Research indicates that positive attitudes toward information and communication technology, coupled with a high perceived level of self-efficacy, greatly assist teachers as they strive to integrate technology into their curricula. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes and perceived levels of self-efficacy as they pertain to information and communication technology (ICT) of career and technical educators at high schools in Mississippi in an effort to better understand one part of the fabric that makes up the educational mosaic in Mississippi. Participants for this study included career and technical educators teaching in one of three disciplines: 1) Agriculture, 2) Allied Health, or 3) Business and Technology. The instrument used for this study was the Information and Communication Technology Attitude and Self-Efficacy Survey (ICTASES). The researcher collected information pertaining to the educators' attitudes and self-efficacy toward information and communication technology, as well as participant demographics. The results of the study indicated that the attitudes of Mississippi career and technical educators toward ICT were positive, while their perceived levels self-efficacy toward ICT was high. The educators in each of the three disciplines demonstrated positive attitudes and high perceived levels of self-efficacy toward ICT despite significant differences between the disciplines. Business and Technology educators demonstrated attitudes and perceived levels of self-efficacy toward ICT that were significantly more positive, and higher, respectively, than those educators teaching Agriculture or Allied Health. Additionally, the study found that that the more advanced a degree the educator held, the greater the likelihood that he/she exhibited a more positive attitude and a greater level of perceived self-efficacy toward ICT. Those educators possessing a bachelor or master's degree possessed attitudes and perceived levels of self-efficacy toward ICT that were significantly more than those educators possessing an associate's degree. Finally, the attitudes of the educators toward ICT were found to be positively correlated with the educators' perceived self-efficacy toward ICT. This result indicates that as the level of self-efficacy of the career and technical educators increases so does the likelihood that the positivity of their attitude will increase.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research was to investigate the perceived impact of ICT on Zimbabwean A-level science and mathematics teachers' self-directed professional development. The study was based on a questionnaire survey of 254 teachers throughout the country. Supplementary data came from 54 interviews. Some observations of teachers using ICT in teacher-centres, e-mail correspondence, and field reports also contributed to the database of the study. An analysis framework was developed through the use of grounded theory on the interview transcripts. The framework yielded 9 themes relating to the teachers' use of ICT for their professional development. These were: (1) perceived professional identity; (2) career development; (3) Managing the ICT environment; (4) theoretical and content knowledge; (5) practical knowledge and skills; (6) adaptation; (7) professional networking and; (8-9) perceived benefits to teachers and students. Chaos (complexity) theory was used to identify the major attractors (goals) for teachers' self-directed professional development using ICT. Two attractors were identified. These were personal professional development and classroom practice. However, an over-riding factor common to both attractors was identified as self-efficacy. The study identified the over-arching driver for self-directed professional development as the teacher's need to improve their self-efficacy. A two dimensional model of self-directed professional development was suggested. The systemic element of the model focused on the self-correcting impact of ICT use on professional development, whilst the personal element focused on self-efficacy as the central stratum for self-directed professional development. The study concluded by acknowledging the potent role that ICT is playing in the self-directed continuing professional development of teachers in Zimbabwe, and recommended, among other things, the inclusion of A-level teachers in the development of localised online materials resources for their subjects. This will help to enhance relevance of the materials to the Zimbabwean context

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine Mississippi's Career and Technology School Administrators' attitudes and perceptions toward technology integration and to determine their knowledge and use of the NETS·A. The study contributed to the literature on technology integration and the NETS·A in the secondary classroom. The research design for this study was descriptive and correlational. A pilot study was conducted prior to the commencement of the research study in which no problems were identified. Out of a population of 144 Mississippi Career and Technology School Administrators, 102 participated in the study. A survey instrument consisting of three parts was used in this study. Part I of the instrument was designed to collect demographic data and to determine administrators' training and experience with technology. Part II was the "Survey of Administrative Attitudes and Perceptions toward Technology Integration", and Part III was the "Administrator Technology Self-Assessment Tool". The research questions posed in the study were developed to examine Mississippi Career and Technology School Administrators' attitudes and perceptions toward technology integration and to determine their knowledge and use of the NETS·A. The study was further designed to determine whether relationships existed between the variable attitude and perceptions and the variables knowledge and use, demographic characteristics, and experience and training with technology integration. Pearson r, Spearman rs, and Point-biserial rpb were used to analyze the data of the returned surveys. After the data were collected and analyzed, the researcher determined that there was a statistically significant correlation between Mississippi Career and Technology School Administrators' attitudes and perceptions of technology integration and the variable knowledge and use of the NETS·A and the variable experience and training with technology integration. There was no statistically significant correlation between Mississippi's Career and Technology School Administrators' attitudes and perceptions of technology integration and the variables age, sex, and years experience as an administrator. Conclusions and recommendations based on the findings in this study indicated that Mississippi Career and Technology School Administrators should be required to increase their experience and training with technology integration. School administrators should also broaden their knowledge and increase their use of the NETS·A.

Book excerpt: The study compared the differences between pre- and post-teacher technological self-efficacy, technology proficiency, frequency of use, perceptions, classroom practices, and student interactions when information and communication technology (ICT) is implemented in the classroom. Survey, teacher information technology logs, observation, and interview data were collected from a purposeful sample of urban middle school teachers in a southeast Texas school district. Quantitative data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means and two-tailed paired t-test. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Quantitative analysis revealed there was a significant mean difference between pre- and post-teacher technological self-efficacy for the Technology and Teaching Efficacy Scale and that there was not a significant mean difference between pre- and post- teacher technological proficiency for the Technology Proficiency Self-Assessment for 21st Century Learning survey. The qualitative analysis provided supporting evidence of the influence implementation of ICT had on teacher classroom practices and student classroom interactions pre- and post-ICT implementation. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the factors and perceptions that affect enrollment in career and technical education (CTE) programs in rural East Central Mississippi. Specifically, the study had four key purposes. First, the academic grades of CTE students and non-CTE students were examined to determine whether academic grades differ significantly between the CTE enrollers and non-CTE enrollers. Secondly, the study determined the perceptions that students in rural East Central Mississippi have toward CTE programs. Next, the study examined the internal and external factors that cause students to enroll or not enroll in a CTE program. Finally, the study identified the individuals who can positively or negatively affect a student's decision to enroll in a CTE program. The research design for this study was causal-comparative, and the researcher used descriptive statistics, as well as frequencies and percentages to analyze the data. The Mann-Whitney U test and a series of t-tests for independent variables were used to test the hypotheses. The population for this study was 400 high school seniors enrolled in seven rural East Central Mississippi high schools that feed into three career and technical centers. A total of 284 students completed the proper consent and assent forms in order to participate in the study. Findings in this study indicated that a significant difference did not exist between the academic grades of CTE students and non-CTE students. Additional results showed a significant difference between CTE enrollers and non-CTE enrollers in regard to four of the eleven perceptions of CTE. In addition, the researcher found that students enroll in CTE because they are interested in one of the career areas and want to attend college in that career area. It was also determined that CTE students enjoy spending time away from their high school. The study showed that non-CTE students did not enroll in CTE because it would not fit into their schedule. The researcher also found that friends and parents mostly encouraged students to enroll in CTE, while in some instances guidance counselors may have discouraged them from enrolling in a CTE program.

Book excerpt: The study examined preservice teachers' personal use of technology, self-efficacy with technology, attitude about technology, perceived usefulness of technology, and knowledge and skills with technology related to early adoption of technology. Survey, interview, and demographic data were collected from a purposeful sample of instructors of an instructional technology course and a convenience sample of the preservice teachers enrolled in their sections of the class, in a mid-sized suburban university in the Gulf Coast region. The Students and Information Technology in Higher Education Survey, Computer Technologies and Strategies Scale, Attitudes toward Computer Technologies Scale, Technological Knowledge Survey component of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) surveys were used to determine the beliefs and attitudes reported by the preservice teachers. One-to-one interviews further explored the instructors' beliefs and attitudes associated with the preservice teachers identified as early adopters of technology. Quantitative data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and two-tailed independent t-tests, while an inductive coding process analyzed the collected qualitative data. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between perceived usefulness and early adoption of technology. Significant correlations were also found between the independent variables: personal use was correlated with self-efficacy, attitude, perceived usefulness, and knowledge and skills. Statistically significant positive relationships were also observed between self-efficacy and attitude, self-efficacy and perceived usefulness, attitude and perceived usefulness, attitude and knowledge and skills, and perceived usefulness and knowledge and skills. The qualitative analysis provided supporting evidence that the model had correctly identified the early adopters of technology within each section of the course.

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study was to investigate the Spanish and Portuguese Instructors' attitudes toward technology at the University of Mississippi. In this mixed method study, with a very limited number of participants (N = 20), attitudes were analyzed by combining the results of all three instruments that composed this research project: a survey, class observations and personal interviews. The results from the triangulation of these three instruments showed that the instructors have a positive attitude toward technology. This particular investigation adapted and employed two dimensions to assess teachers' attitudes toward technology: (1) anxiety, fear and/or aversion; and (2) enjoyment, enthusiasm and/or confidence. Cronbach's alpha was computed for each dimension, and the results revealed a high level of reliability and internal consistency with all alphas exceeding .90 for both scales (.907 and .915, respectively). After statistically analyzing both dimensions, a Pearson's product-moment correlation (the Pearson r) was also computed to measure the strength of the relationship between these two variables, which are labeled ANX (anxiety) and ENJ (enjoyment). The analysis suggested that there is a strong statistically significant negative linear relationship between enjoyment and anxiety (r = -.848, p
