Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Miner’s story of Milwaukee is filled with memorable characters . . . explores with consummate skill the dynamics of race, politics, and schools in our time.” —Mike Rose, author of The Mind at Work Weaving together the racially fraught history of public education in Milwaukee and the broader story of hypersegregation in the rust belt, Lessons from the Heartland tells of a city’s fall from grace—and its chance for redemption in the twenty-first century. A symbol of middle American working-class values, Wisconsin—and in particular urban Milwaukee—has been at the forefront of a half century of public education experiments, from desegregation and “school choice” to vouchers and charter schools. This book offers a sweeping narrative portrait of an all-American city at the epicenter of public education reform, and an exploration of larger issues of race and class in our democracy. The author, a former Milwaukee Journal reporter whose daughters went through the public school system, explores the intricate ways that jobs, housing, and schools intersect, underscoring the intrinsic link between the future of public schools and the dreams and hopes of democracy in a multicultural society. “A social history with the pulse and pace of a carefully crafted novel and a Dickensian cast of unforgettable characters. With the eye of an ethnographer, the instincts of a beat reporter, and the heart of a devoted mother and citizen activist, Miner has created a compelling portrait of a city, a time, and a people on the edge. This is essential reading.” —Bill Ayers, author of Teaching Toward Freedom “Eloquently captures the narratives of schoolchildren, parents, and teachers.” —Library Journal
Download or read book Seeds of Crisis written by John L. Rury and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beset by such controversies as whether they have the right to search students' lockers for guns and drugs, big city schools are making adjustments unimaginable in earlier eras, when detention was still sufficient for keeping order. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is one city trying to cope with the educational challenges of the twentieth century. Seeds of Crisis examines the ways in which these challenges have affected the politics of education, the curriculum, the work of teachers and principals, and the everyday lives of students in Milwaukee. Since the problems facing urban schools are similar from city to city, a close and careful look at the historical roots and origins of the situation in Milwaukee can serve as a model for those working on solutions in other places. The contributors touch on topics from curriculum to desegregation in the Milwaukee public schools, setting the schools' histories within a broader context of the changing urban scene and educational policy issues. Taken together, these essays offer an unusual perspective on the development of a major urban school system as it prepares to face the future.
Book Synopsis Public Education in Milwaukee by : Public Policy Forum, Inc., Milwaukee, WI.
Download or read book Public Education in Milwaukee written by Public Policy Forum, Inc., Milwaukee, WI. and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telephone interviews were conducted in May-June 2006 with 900 adult residents of the City of Milwaukee, which is contiguous with the Milwaukee public school district. Respondents were representative of the general adult population of the school district with respect to race, gender, education, income and geography. The goal in conducting the survey was to gain an understanding of the knowledge, opinions and attitudes toward Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) by adult residents of the district. The survey included questions about the respondents themselves to control for possible differences in knowledge and opinion based on their own backgrounds. Findings offer insights as the Milwaukee community plans future educational policy: most people, both parents and nonparents, want Milwaukee Public Schools to provide more services that have not traditionally been identified as responsibilities of the school system, including violence prevention, adult mentors for children, before and after school programs, employment counseling, nursing/social work services, housing assistance for poor families and measures to reduce poverty. Other findings include: Perception gaps between those with children in MPS and those without children or with children in schools other than MPS; High levels of satisfactions; Race and income gaps; Funding shortfalls; Externalities as perceived MPS problems; Confidence in schools and school leaders; and Perceived student preparation. Three appendixes are included: (1) Survey Methods; (2) Survey Questionnaire; and (3) Detailed Survey Results. (Contains 25 charts and 4 tables.).
