Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school sports are one of the most prolific extracurricular activities in America. Athletes put their heart and soul into their sports be it during the practice sessions or during the competitions, trying to win the game or to get starting positions. The physical exercises and athletics always keep the players exposed to the risk of physical injuries that require immediate medical attention and care. This is where the student athletic trainers step in. On-site student athletic trainers in high schools play an enormously important role by responding proactively to prevent, identify and to address the immediate needs resulting from athletic injuries. From being captain for the varsity team of the trainers, to staying in the program, trainers work extremely hard to ensure that athletes receive maximum support and care while playing and performing their best. Trainers are the group of people that come to the field before the players arrive and are the last ones to leave the ground. During any game or practice session, student athletic trainers [AM1] are the first people who rush to the field to provide medical aid to the injured athlete. The role and responsibilities of the trainers demands a lot of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice: rain or shine, they are there. It requires lots of mental preparedness and physical strength. Being a student athletic trainer is not an easy job. As someone who has the experience of being a student athletic trainer in High School, I understand the incredible importance that this role plays and the challenges that come with it. What started as a high school program, student athletic training has become a passion within me that keeps growing with each passing day and, with every step that I take on the field. Through this book, I want to capture and share my innate thoughts and my hands-on experience as a student trainer. I want to provide support and guidance to those who choose to pursue this rewarding and fulfilling program that offers multiple opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of student -athletes, both on and off the field. This book is not only a guide to the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of being a successful student athletic trainer, but also a reminder to the importance of taking care of one's physical health while prioritizing mental health along with. Student athletic trainers exhibit strong and constructive relationships with the players while working closely with coaches, parents, and other healthcare professionals. Through the personalized quality care that they provide, student athletic trainers can meet the individual needs of the athletes and to keep them motivated to perform their best and play fearlessly. While supporting and imbibing the players with positivity, student athletic trainers continue to keep on gaining knowledge and to keep on honing their own skills in the areas of injury prevention, rehabilitation, nutrition, hydration, physical and mental health. They develop a strong communication and teamwork skills as they work closely with the players and their peers. This book aims to provide a valuable information and practical advice at all levels of being a student athletic trainer

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative research project is to determine whether student athletic trainers will reduce the impact of injuries in high school sports. Existing literature shows that high school sports injuries are a critical problem; therefore practical and economical solutions are needed. A rural high school setting was studied using a variety of research tools including questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. Questionnaires were administered to studetns in Health Careers classes and to high school coaches. Interviews were administered to students interested in becoming student athletic trainers, physical therapists in the community, and parents. Direct observation was conducted at various high school athletic events. Findings indicate that student athletic trainers may help to reduce high school sports injuries and help to provide coaches more time to coach. Additionally, most subjects agreed that programs would allow student athletic trainers to take their education and experiences to a higher level in fitness careers. Future studies are needed to implement and assess student athletic trainer programs in order to measure their success.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to survey the high school athletic directors in California to determine current levels of on-site medical care for student-athletes. Athletic directors indicated satisfaction ratings of utilized on-site medical personnel. Medical personnel employment time, employment status (contracted from an external source, employed as staff, or volunteer), and rates of athletic event coverage by medical personnel were reported. Significant determinants of "satisfactory" coverage were reported as well as school descriptors (size, population, and socio-economic status) and medical coverage rates for each sport offered. Coaches were also asked to identify key determinants that dictated the current level of medical coverage provided by his or her respective school. All medical professionals received averaged satisfaction ratings of "average" to "above average" from athletic directors. "Excellent" was the most frequent rating given to all personnel by participating athletic directors. Medical coverage for practices and competitions was most commonly provided by certified athletic trainers. Physicians and EMTs/paramedics most frequently provided game coverage as part-time volunteers or contractors. Performance was the highest valued determinant for athletic directors in choosing medical personnel coverage for sporting events, and low-cost/volunteered services were the least influential. Athletic directors reported that "need" was the most important factor in deciding coverage for sports and events (practices and competitions).
