Book excerpt: Answers the calls of grassroots communities pressing for integration and increased education funding with a complete rethinking of school discipline In the era of zero tolerance, we are flooded with stories about schools issuing draconian punishments for relatively innocent behavior. One student was suspended for chewing a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun. Another was expelled for cursing on social media from home. Suspension and expulsion rates have doubled over the past three decades as zero tolerance policies have become the normal response to a host of minor infractions that extend well beyond just drugs and weapons. Students from all demographic groups have suffered, but minority and special needs students have suffered the most. On average, middle and high schools suspend one out of four African American students at least once a year. The effects of these policies are devastating. Just one suspension in the ninth grade doubles the likelihood that a student will drop out. Fifty percent of students who drop out are subsequently unemployed. Eighty percent of prisoners are high school drop outs. The risks associated with suspension and expulsion are so high that, as a practical matter, they amount to educational death penalties, not behavioral correction tools. Most important, punitive discipline policies undermine the quality of education that innocent bystanders receive as well—the exact opposite of what schools intend. Derek Black, a former attorney with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, weaves stories about individual students, lessons from social science, and the outcomes of courts cases to unearth a shockingly irrational system of punishment. While schools and legislatures have proven unable and unwilling to amend their failing policies, Ending Zero Tolerance argues for constitutional protections to check abuses in school discipline and lays out theories by which courts should re-engage to enforce students’ rights and support broader reforms.

Book excerpt: Through a case study of the Los Angeles city school district from the 1950s through the 1970s, Judith Kafka explores the intersection of race, politics, and the bureaucratic organization of schooling. Kafka argues that control over discipline became increasingly centralized in the second half of the twentieth century in response to pressures exerted by teachers, parents, students, principals, and local politicians - often at different historical moments, and for different purposes. Kafka demonstrates that the racial inequities produced by today's school discipline policies were not inevitable, nor are they immutable.

Book excerpt: Mandatory punishments for disciplinary offenses have been included in school districts' Student Codes of Conduct since it was mandated by the Gun Free Schools Act of 1994. While zero tolerance policies were initially created to protect students and teachers from gun attacks in schools, the way in which these policies have actually been implemented in schools has prompted some parents, educators, and politicians to challenge them and call for zero tolerance policy reform. Since 1994, a majority of school districts have expanded their use of zero tolerance policies to include infractions other than those included to keep guns out of schools. Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies, the first comprehensive study of its kind, conducted by author Dr. Brian James Schoonover, examines the history of zero tolerance policies, including the practice of adding offenses other than the possession of guns to these policies. With practical, action oriented recommendations on ways policymakers and educational leaders can improve how students are disciplined, Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies offers recommendations on what should be included in a model Student Code of Conduct as well as a recommendation for starting a Three CHANCE (Changing Habits After New Character Education) system of educational placements to ensure all students are educated in a safe and appropriate facility.

Book excerpt: Despite well-publicized reports of decreased incidents of violence, the United States remains a leader in rates of homicide, handgun ownership, and school violence. Based on research conducted in high schools and a prison, At Zero Tolerance examines how the United States has responded to violence in its schools and in its streets. In addition to its critique of «get tough» policies initiated in the 1990s, this book offers a means of violence prevention that addresses issues of school restructuring, handgun policy, vocational education, and popular culture. At Zero Tolerance examines violence and violence prevention from the perspectives of policy, institutional reform, and the individuals most affected by the crisis, namely, youths caught in cycles of victimization and victimizing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're smart and cute and fun to be around. So naturally you wonder why you’re still single. Well, here's a news flash: It’s Not You, It’s Him! This book will make dating fun again—and help you find the love you always dreamed of “Why is this book for single women? Because we think about relationships, and talk about relationships, much more than single men do. And when things go wrong, we’re also much more likely to blame ourselves! We ask ourselves, “What’s wrong with me?” “What did I do?” “What should I have done differently?” Well, maybe, just maybe you are not the problem. Maybe, just maybe, you’d still be single even if you were perfect. Maybe the men you’re meeting have the problems. Maybe it’s not you, it’s him! Actually, there’s no maybe about it. Your aunt in Florida, your married brother, and your gym friends are wrong—you are not single because you’re too picky, too pushy, or a princess. Besides, even if you were, picky, pushy princesses get married every day. And so will you. So let’s get real and get you the life you want.” --Dr. Georgia Witkin, from… It’s Not You, It’s Him In her upbeat new “rules” for finding lasting love, Dr. Georgia Witkin shows that the secret to dating without all the pain is to assume that you are perfectly lovable exactly as you are. When a good date goes bad, the problem is never you. It’s him! Suddenly dating is so simple. You will never again ask “why didn’t he call?” It doesn’t matter. You will never ask, “How should I change?” You don’t have to. Instead you will do what you want, go where you want, wear what you want, and it will only make you more perfect. You will take everything dates say and do as information about them—not you. You will have zero tolerance when you’re getting zero. You will feel happy, in control, and actually enjoy dating again. And before too long, the new you will fall wildly in love with a man who is just perfect enough to find you irresistible.

Book excerpt: A pioneering title, High Definition explores theonslaught of new and highly accurate digital metrology tools inlarge- and small-scale 3-D scanning and 3-D modelling. Capable ofmeasuring space to an accuracy of less than 1 mm, these tools offerunprecedented precision for the development and interrogation ofdesign before, during and post production. Over the last decade orso, the array of designers’ digital tools to propose and maketheir ideas have evolved significantly, but the absence ofhigh-accuracy, zero-tolerance design production has often remainedthe missing piece between design and fulfilment. Innovativetechnologies are thus substantially recalibrating the way thatdesigners operate in the world between the drawn and the made, having the power to transform the architect’s role from thatof visualiser to one that is intensely involved with therealisation of objects and buildings. High Definition willexamine the capabilities of advanced technologies in designproduction through their impact on design theory, practice andgreater levels of collaboration between design and manufacturing. It will permeate the entangled world between means and meaning andunravel a new understanding between the representation andproduction of architectural design. Book excerpt: What is policing about and who defines it? This book examines these key issues by exploring the notion of zero tolerance and its application in different settings. Following its introduction in New York, and the seemingly dramatic reduction in crime, zero tolerance policing was taken up in a number of other countries, including the UK and the Netherlands. This book examines that process. It argues that this policy was, in fact, nothing more than a return to old-style, crime control policing. While it did foster the swift analysis of crime patterns and more assertive policing of public places, it could lean towards repression and demonising of certain groups. Examining the EEE Examining the EEEExamining the negative response of leading police officers and the policy's debatable impact on crime, the author concludes that zero tolerance in the UK and Netherlands was more of a populist political and media creation than a coherent policy. This book is far more than an authoritative analysis of zero tolerance. It is a valuable source for entering the debate about the big picture in policing which many stakeholders now wish to see. The approachable style of this book makes it ideal for students, academics, police practitioners and the lay reader to enter that debate.

Book excerpt: Addressing the problem of school violence and disruption requires thoughtful understanding of the complexity of the personal and systemic factors that increase the probability of violence, and designing interventions based on that understanding. This inaugural issue explores the effectiveness of zero tolerance as a tool for promoting school safety and improving student behavior and offers alternative strategies that work. Authors examine the state of knowledge in research and law concerning zero tolerance and present data illustrating that zero tolerance has failed to demonstrate effectiveness in reducing school violence or improving student discipline. They present disciplinary alternatives, long-term preventatives, and working models that make a positive contribution to school safety and support positive youth development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Debra Kidd, A Curriculum of Hope: As rich in humanity as in knowledge explores how good curriculum design can empower schools to build bridges between their pupils' learning and the world around them. A great many schools are wondering how they can build a curriculum model that meets the demands of government policy as well as the needs of the children and communities they serve. In Curriculum of Hope, Debra illustrates how teachers can deliver learning experiences that genuinely link knowledge to life. Working on the premise that a strong curriculum is supported by five key pillars of practice coherence, credibility, creativity, compassion and community she presents a plethora of examples that demonstrate how schools, parents, pupils and the wider local community can learn together to build from within. Debra enquires into the ways in which schools can create units of work that are both knowledge- and humanity-rich, and challenges the view that the role of children is simply to listen and learn instead advocating their active engagement with local and global issues. She does so by delving into the role of pedagogy as a means of empowering children, and by exploring some of the more overlooked pedagogical tools that can have a great impact on children's learning and well-being story, movement and play as well as some of the recent research into memory and retention. Towards the back of the book you will find case studies demonstrating how teachers can work with both their own and other subject departments across the school to plan in ways that allow for pupil choice, autonomy and responsibility. Furthermore, there are some accompanying planning documents for these examples provided in the appendix (The Seed Catalogue) which you may find useful, and these documents are also available for download. Suitable for teachers and leaders in all schools.
