Book excerpt: Professor Dyer of Miskatonic University recounts a fateful trip to Antarctica during which he discovered the dreadful remnants of a lost expedition group. When Dyer finds the lost group’s camp, it is littered with the bodies of the men and their dogs once stationed there. As he investigates the grisly murders and the strange specimens found by the expedition, Dyer realizes there are more powerful beings living amid the mountains than anyone could have possibly imagined. “At the Mountains of Madness” features many of the mythological horrific beings central to “The Cthulhu Mythos”—a universe created by Lovecraft and subsequent writers like August Derleth that centered around “The Great Old Ones.” The Cthulhu Mythos has become influential in popular culture and has inspired numerous books, comics, films, and games. HarperCollins brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. Book excerpt: Lovecraft's classic tale of Antarctic science-terror, At the Mountains of Madness, follows geologist Dyer and his team of experts--including Pabodie, the engineer, Lake, the biologist, and Danforth, the neurasthenic youth--as they traipse across our southernmost continent, taking bores of ancient strata of rock. Sane men going insane in an utterly blank terrain. Early on, Lake sees a set of inexplicable triangular tracks in the rocks and eventually sets off to lead a small team further inland, arriving at a previously undiscovered and incredibly tall mountain range in the wild land's heart. There, Lake finds an aeon-spanning cave, from which he recovers the desiccated bodies of several radially symmetric, many-tentacled, starfish-headed, half-vegetable, man-sized beings--the aliens who left the strange tracks, millennia ago. Lovecraft's vision of an other world within our own world is not fantasy, nor the type of "gee-whiz, wouldn't that be somethin!" science fiction in which the latest not-even-practical-enough-to-merit-being-called-an-advance "advances" are spun forward into fabulous new iterations.

At the Mountains of Madness is a very good introduction to Lovecraft's mythology of the Old Ones and the glories and horrors that preceded humankind and that still linger in places. It is a good novella on it's own, and helpful to understanding events and creatures in his other works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally composed in 1931, H.P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness (1936) is one of his most famous and successful stories, with numerous overt connections to his other works. The story is narrated by Professor William Dyer, a geologist with Miskatonic University. He begins by explaining that he does not wish to tell his story, but is compelled to because men of science will not heed his warnings without explanations. Dyer led a team sponsored by the university that intended to use an advanced new drilling technology to extract samples from Antarctica. Dyer's team included Frank Pabodie, the inventor of the drill, as well as Lake and Atwood, fellow professors from the university, and assistants. Dyer makes it clear he is attempting to dissuade a planned second mission from following in their footsteps.Dyer details their initial work taking bore samples. Some of the samples seem to have triangular-shaped prints in them, but the team dismisses these as distortions. As the team moves over the South Pole, it sees a previously unknown range of mountains. Lake announces that he will take a team to explore this new feature, despite Dyer's misgivings. Lake and his team fly off in one of the expedition's airplanes, which crashes near the mountains. Lake and his team survive and set up a camp at the site. The team begins core sampling near the crash site and discovers an underground cavern. They cautiously enter the cavern and discover that it is filled with bones and shells--a huge amount of animal remains of all kinds. At first, the team is disturbed, but Dyer explains this by theorizing that the bones were carried into the cavern via runoff during ice melts, which satisfies the others.Further exploration reveals more than a dozen fossilized artifacts, described as "barrel-shaped." These fossils are in nearly perfect condition despite having clearly been in the cavern for a very long time. The team transports some of these fossils to the surface to have their first clear look at the creatures. Their bodies are barrel-shaped, with tentacle-like arms, star-shaped heads--and triangular feet that match the prints seen in earlier core samples.
