Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While growing up, we seldom ever think about how our life is going to end. Sometimes maybe we think when, but seldom how. After the eruption of the caldera called Yellowstone National Park, I began to think how I would die. My name is Ann Marie Harris Blake. My father Eugene Harris had predicted the volcanic eruption at Yellowstone several years prior to the actual eruption. However, no one would listen to him. He was a crank; or publicity seeker, or just a nut. When he finally told the Park Rangers at Yellowstone that the Park was ready to blow, they assured him it would calm down within the month. It didn't. He called them fools and went home. And, a week later, it erupted. This two-part journal tells how the Harris family survived the Yellowstone eruption; who else survived; and how. If it hadn't been for Eugene Harris, this story would never have been written. Take note: Yellowstone is overdue to erupt. It's been 640,000 years and it has been smoldering ever since. Maybe this story isn't so far-fetched after all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly—from being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. Armchair travelers and park visitors alike will be fascinated by this important book detailing the dangers awaiting in our first national park.

Over 60 different species of aerobic and anaerobic thermophilic bacteria are covered. Isolation, growth methods, characterization and identification, ecology, metabolism, and enzymology of thermophilic bacteria are examined in detail, and an extensive compilation of recent biotechnological applications and the properties of many thermostable enzymes are also included. Major topics discussed in the book include a general review on thermophilic bacteria and archaea; heterotropic bacilli; the genus Thermus; new and rare genera of aerobic heterophophs, such as Saccharococcus, Rhodothermus, and Scotohermus; aerobic chemolithoautotrophic thermophilic bacteria; obligately anaerobic thermophilic bacteria; and hyperthermophilic Thermotogales and thermophilic phototrophs. Extensive bibliographies are also provided for each chapter. The vast amount of information packed into this one volume makes it essential for all microbiologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and students interested in the expanding field of thermophilicity. Biotechnologists will find the book useful as a source of information on thermophiles or thermostable enzymes of possible industrial use.

Easy-to-understand scientific explanations and diagrams complement an array of short walks, the right season for camping, and the park's campgrounds and facilities. Updated road logs highlight more than 100 historical points of interest, including the often misidentified locale from which artist Thomas Moran painted his "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone" masterpiece and where five stagecoach robberies occurred along the Grand Loop Road. New text examines areas that have changed in recent years, including the reconstructed Canyon-to-Dunraven Pass and the newly completed North Rim Drive at the Grand Canyon. Additionally, numerous new photographs feature historical and contemporary images.
