Book excerpt: Lisa Williams had it all-exquisite beauty, a lucrative career, and a fabulous home. As a high-powered marketing executive for a Fortune 500 firm, she called the shots and meticulously planned every aspect of her privileged life. Every aspect, that is, except ... When her father died unexpectedly in her junior year of college, gone, too, was that moral compass that was to guide Lisa safely toward true love. Naive and uncertain when it came to matters of the heart, she gave herself completely over to a series of failed relationships. In the end, Daniel's well-hidden secret nearly caused Lisa to throw in the towel on life when his dirty laundry came to light. But, somehow, she found the strength to press forward. Although barely. Behind the torturous suffering of unrequited love, she buried her passions deep within and vowed never again to allow her heart to lead her astray. To avoid the pain that nearly drove her to suicide, Lisa developed a failsafe, ten-rule checklist to screen for the next Mr. Right. Everything worked perfectly until Jacob entered the picture. While definitely not a man Lisa's overbearing, status-driven mother would approve of, he was every bit the knight in shining armor she had been praying for. Only one problem: how would she get past the fact that Jacob did not even meet the top two rules on her checklist? Take this journey with Lisa as she tries desperately to reclaim the bright optimism and certainty of her youth while leaving behind the pain and disillusionment of her present. And discover whether she truly can reconcile Jacob's shortcomings with her trusted checklist.

Now retired and at peace, Terence can look back peacefully on a turbulent, but mainly happy, seven decades.
Book Synopsis Scene through a Rearview Mirror: A Backward Glance by : Jim Shields
Download or read book Scene through a Rearview Mirror: A Backward Glance written by Jim Shields and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is a stage on which men, women, and children live daily dramas. These dramas shape and fashion our living. The street corners, homes, the everyday places are theaters, windows into a world of goings-on. Dramas are part and parcel of our existence, as we are all actors on life's stage without direction, constantly improvising and coping. As a child, observing grown-ups from a safe distance became a hobby for young Jim Shields. The stories in this collection have their origins in these observations, detailing lives of ordinary people coping with what comes their way. In the roulette of life, there is tragedy, comedy, sadness, and joy. Within the pages of this book, these all come into play. Shields writes from a small, sparsely furnished study-a haven of peace and quiet in the midst of the bustle of family life. It is here where he puts pen to paper. From the well of imperfect memory, inspiration grows, and black ink magically forms words. This collection is life as seen through a rearview mirror.

The pacing is brisk, the high-tech details vivid, the rewards to readers considerable.” ---Booklist “Williams colorfully invokes the life of the trader families and their honkeytonk space stations. With its emphasis on youth, beauty, sex, and mischief, [ANGEL STATION] also conjures a contemporary mood agreeably distinct from its futuristic settings.” --Publishers Weekly “Williams has it all.” --Analog “Williams is a skillfully literate addition to the stylish new generation of science fiction writers.” ---Chicago Tribune
Book Synopsis A Comprehensive Examination of Naturalistic Lane Changes by : Suzanne E. Lee
Download or read book A Comprehensive Examination of Naturalistic Lane Changes written by Suzanne E. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort provided valuable insight into the nature and severity of lane changes in a naturalistic driving environment. Sixteen commuters who normally drove more than 25 miles (40 km) in each direction participated. The two research vehicles were a sedan and an SUV; each participant drove each vehicle for ten days. Data gathering was automatic, and no experimenter was present in the vehicle. There were 8,667 lane changes observed over 23,949 miles of driving, making this the largest known data collection effort for the study of lane changes. Analysis of the full data set resulted in many interesting findings regarding the frequency, duration, urgency, and severity of lane changes in regard to maneuver type, direction, and other classification variables. A subset of the full data set (500 lane changes) was then analyzed in greater depth using the sensor data collected by the instrumented vehicle. The sampled lane changes were generally of the more severe and urgent types since these are the cases in which a lane change collision avoidance system is likely to be of greatest help. Variables analyzed for the sampled lane changes included turn signal use, braking behavior, steering behavior, eye glance patterns, and forward and rearward area analysis. The concept of a safety envelope for lane changes was then developed using the forward and rearward area analyses. Finally, the data were used to provide recommendations for designers of lane change CAS in terms of display location and activation criteria. Overall, the research described in this report provides insight into the behaviors and parameters associated with lane changes, while the naturalistic data archive has the potential to address other questions related to driving behavior.

Download or read book Mirror Meditation written by Tara Well and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the power of mirror meditation to help you awaken self-compassion, increase self-awareness, and gain the confidence needed to thrive. Seeing ourselves clearly isn’t always easy—especially in the age of social media. Technology has eroded our capacity for authentic self-reflection. As a result, we feel more anxious and depressed, have shorter attention spans, and have become more estranged from ourselves and each other. We’ve also become more critical of our physical appearance, and this self-criticism can damage our confidence and stand in the way of our happiness. In order to heal, we must come face to face with our true selves—not the images of ourselves that we alter and post online. If you're ready for self-reflection that has nothing to do with selfies, this book will reveal the way. Based in cutting-edge neuroscience, Mirror Meditation offers mindful practices for increasing your self-awareness, managing stress and emotions, developing self-compassion, and increasing your confidence and personal presence. Using the three principles of mindfulness meditation—attention to the present moment, open awareness, and kind intention toward oneself—you’ll realize just how much your self-criticisms are affecting you. Then you’ll have a choice—and a practice—to treat yourself with more self-acceptance. Self-awareness can help you break free from both your inner critic and the external world that stokes the fears and anxieties that we are never good enough, never have enough, and are never safe enough. The simple self-mirroring technique in this unique guide isn’t grounded in technology—just a commitment to be present with yourself.

"Speak up for yourself—we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, an outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops. Now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, Melinda becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether. Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back—and refuses to be silent.
