Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and analysing the complex phenomena related to elastic wave propagation has been the subject of intense research for many years and has enabled application in numerous fields of technology, including structural health monitoring (SHM). In the course of the rapid advancement of diagnostic methods utilising elastic wave propagation, it has become clear that existing methods of elastic wave modeling and analysis are not always very useful; developing numerical methods aimed at modeling and analysing these phenomena has become a necessity. Furthermore, any methods developed need to be verified experimentally, which has become achievable with the advancement of measurement methods utilising laser vibrometry. Guided Waves in Structures for SHM reports on the simulation, analysis and experimental investigation related propagation of elastic waves in isotropic or laminated structures. The full spectrum of theoretical and practical issues associated with propagation of elastic waves is presented and discussed in this one study. Key features: Covers both numerical and experimental aspects of modeling, analysis and measurement of elastic wave propagation in structural elements formed from isotropic or composite materials Comprehensively discusses the application of the Spectral Finite Element Method for modelling and analysing elastic wave propagation in diverse structural elements Presents results of experimental measurements employing advanced laser technologies, validating the quality and correctness of the developed numerical models Accompanying website (www.wiley.com/go/ostachowicz) contains demonstration versions of commercial software developed by the authors for modelling and analyzing elastic wave propagation using the Spectral Finite Element Method Guided Waves in Structures for SHM provides a state of the art resource for researchers and graduate students in structural health monitoring, signal processing and structural dynamics. This book should also provide a useful reference for practising engineers within structural health monitoring and non-destructive testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John G. Harris intended to explain in this book the special techniques required to model the radiation and diffraction of elastic and surface waves. Sadly, he died before he could fulfil this ambition, but his plan has been brought to fruition by a team of his distinguished collaborators. The book begins with the basic underlying equations for wave motion and then builds upon this foundation by solving a number of fundamental scattering problems. The remaining chapters provide a thorough introduction to modern techniques that have proven essential to understanding radiation and diffraction at high frequencies. Graduate students, researchers and professionals in applied mathematics, physics and engineering will find that the chapters increase in complexity, beginning with plane-wave propagation and spectral analyses. Other topics include elastic wave theory, the Wiener–Hopf technique, the effects of viscosity on acoustic diffraction, and the phenomenon of channelling of wave energy along guided structures.

Book Synopsis Surface Waves in Anisotropic and Laminated Bodies and Defects Detection by : Robert V. Goldstein

This book was released on 2006-02-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the variety of wave motions one can single out surface wave pr- agation since these surface waves often adjust the features of the energy transfer in the continuum (system), its deformation and fracture. Predicted by Rayleigh in 1885, surface waves represent waves localized in the vicinity ofextendedboundaries(surfaces)of?uidsorelasticmedia. Intheidealcase of an isotropic elastic half-space while the Rayleigh waves propagate along the surface, the wave amplitude (displacement) in the transverse direction exponentially decays with increasing distance away from the surface. As a resulttheenergyofsurfaceperturbationsislocalizedbytheRayleighwaves within a relatively narrow layer beneath the surface. It is this property of the surface waves that leads to the resonance phenomena that accompany the motion of the perturbation sources (like surface loads) with velocities close to the Rayleigh one; (see e. g. , R. V. Goldstein. Rayleigh waves and resonance phenomena in elastic bodies. Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (PMM), 1965, v. 29, N 3, pp. 608-619). It is essential to note that resonance phenomena are also inherent to the elastic medium in the case where initially there are no free (unloaded) surfaces. However, they occur as a result of an external action accompanied by the violation of the continuity of certain physical quantities, e. g. , by crack nucleation and dynamic propagation. Note that the aforementioned resonance phenomena are related to the nature of the surface waves as homogeneous solutions (eigenfunctions) of the dynamic elasticity equations for a half-space (i. e. nonzero solutions at vanishing boundary conditions).
Book Synopsis Ultrasonic Guided Waves by : Cliff Lissenden
Download or read book Ultrasonic Guided Waves written by Cliff Lissenden and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in solids is an important area of scientific inquiry, primarily due to their practical applications for nondestructive characterization of materials, such as nondestructive inspection, quality assurance testing, structural health monitoring, and providing a material state awareness. This Special Issue of Applied Sciences covers all aspects of ultrasonic guided waves (e.g., phased array transducers, meta-materials to control wave propagation characteristics, scattering, attenuation, and signal processing techniques) from the perspective of modeling, simulation, laboratory experiments, or field testing. In order to fully utilize ultrasonic guided waves for these applications, it is necessary to have a firm grasp of their requisite characteristics, which include that they are multimodal, dispersive, and are comprised of unique displacement profiles through the thickness of the waveguide.

Book Synopsis Measurement of Nonlinear Ultrasonic Characteristics by : Kyung-Young Jhang
Download or read book Measurement of Nonlinear Ultrasonic Characteristics written by Kyung-Young Jhang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional ultrasonic methods based on ultrasonic characteristics in the linear elastic region are mainly sensitive to mature defects but are much less responsive to micro-damage or incipient material degradation. Recently, nonlinear ultrasonic characteristics beyond the linear ultrasonic amplitude range have been studied as a method for overcoming this limitation, and hence, many researchers are engaged in theoretical, experimental, and various application studies. However, the nonlinear ultrasonic characteristics are quite exacting compared to the linear phenomena so that they require vast experience and high proficiency in order to obtain proper experimental data. Actually, many researchers, especially beginners including graduate students, have difficulty in reliably measuring nonlinear ultrasonic characteristics. This book provides key technological know-how from experts with years of experience in this field, which will help researchers and engineers to obtain a clear understanding and high quality data in the nonlinear ultrasonic experiments and applications.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Localization Phenomena in Elasticity, Acoustics and Electromagnetism by : Richard V. Craster
Download or read book Dynamic Localization Phenomena in Elasticity, Acoustics and Electromagnetism written by Richard V. Craster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Properties of wave localization play a decisive role both in applications of engineered microstructures and in the detection of cracks and flaws. The papers in this volume give an introduction into a variety of interrelated dynamic localization phenomena occurring in elasticity, acoustics and electromagnetism. In particular, these involve surface and edge waves and also trapped modes localized near defects, shape changes and the edges of elongated waveguides. The effects of layering, prestress, anisotropy, periodic microstructures as well as various multi-field phenomena are addressed with reference to underlying industrial problems. The essential and up-to-date numerical, asymptotic, and analytical techniques are covered as well as relevant continuum theories that are required to make progress in, and understand wave localization and allied effects. A major focus is on a qualitative physical insight into the mechanisms of dynamic localization.

This text likewise covers the transient waves in layers and rods; diffraction of waves by a slit; and thermal and viscoelastic effects, and effects of anisotropy and nonlinearity. Other topics include the summary of equations in rectangular coordinates, time-harmonic plane waves, approximate theories for rods, and transient in-plane motion of a layer. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on the wave propagation in elastic solids.
Book Synopsis Low and High Frequency Asymptotics by : V. K. Varadan
Download or read book Low and High Frequency Asymptotics written by V. K. Varadan and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on asymptotic methods in the low and high frequency limits for the solution of scattering and propagation problems. Each chapter is pedagogical in nature, starting with the basic foundations and ending with practical applications. For example, using the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction, the canonical problem of edge diffraction is first solved and then used in solving the problem of diffraction by a finite crack. In recent times, the crack problem has been of much interest for its applications to Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of flaws in structural materials.
