Excerpt: ...may be more than one cometary swarm passing round our sun, and each would give rise to its own set of collisions, and thus produce those irregularities in the light variations which appear in certain stars. Further, we may suppose the extent of the paths of these cometary swarms to vary; some coming from long distances would only alter the light of the sun at long intervals of time, while others having short paths would alter the light rapidly in succession. We may even imagine two swarms revolving round a common centre of gravity in close proximity, and very rapidly, and consequently giving rise to frequent alterations in the intensity of light. In the case of new stars, we may imagine two great swarms of meteors coming into direct collision and giving rise to a very intense light, which would rapidly fade away as each separate meteor cooled down. NEBULA. As we contemplate the great vault of space which everywhere surrounds this little world of ours, we are at first most deeply impressed by the more conspicuous bodies which occupy its depths; the brilliant sun, the mildly shining moon, the scintillating stars, and the wandering planets strongly rivet our attention, so that we overlook many things which are no less interesting and remarkable. Among these, star clusters and nebulae hold a conspicuous place, not so much for the appearance they present as for the intellectual reflections and speculations they suggest as to the structure and growth of the universe. Invisible, for the most part, to the naked eye, as they exist only as faint patches of cloudlike hazy light, they long escaped the close attention of astronomers, until the invention of the telescope widened our range of vision, and enabled us to explore the remoter regions of...

Download or read book Sun Moon Earth written by Tyler Nordgren and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With beautiful illustrations and a detailed map, Sun Moon Earth has everything you need to get ready for the next solar eclipse. On April 8, 2024, millions of Americans will experience an awe-inspiring phenomenon: a total eclipse of the sun. In Sun Moon Earth, astronomer Tyler Nordgren illustrates how this most seemingly unnatural of natural phenomena was transformed from a fearsome omen to a tourist attraction. From the astrologers of ancient China and Babylon to the high priests of the Maya, Sun Moon Earth takes us around the world to show how different cultures interpreted these dramatic events. Greek philosophers discovered eclipses' cause and used them to measure their world and the cosmos beyond. Victorian-era scientists mounted eclipse expeditions during the age of globe-spanning empires. And modern-day physicists continue to use eclipses to confirm Einstein's theory of relativity. Beautifully illustrated and lyrically written, Sun Moon Earth is the ideal guide for all eclipse watchers and star gazers alike.
