Book Synopsis Astrology through History by : William E. Burns
Download or read book Astrology through History written by William E. Burns and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphabetically arranged entries cover the history of astrology from ancient Mesopotamia to the 21st century. In addition to surveying the Western tradition, the book explores Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. The field of astrology is growing rapidly, as historians recognize its centrality to the intellectual life of the past and sociologists and anthropologists treat its importance in a number of modern cultures. Despite the historical and cultural significance of the subject, most reference works on astrology focus on instructional techniques and are written by astrologers with little or no interest in the history of the topic. This book instead offers an objective treatment of astrology across world history from ancient Mesopotamia to the present. The book provides alphabetically arranged entries by expert contributors writing on such topics as horoscopes, court astrologers, Renaissance astrology, and comets. While it considers the Western tradition, it also treats Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. In doing so, it explores the role of astrology in shaping science, literature, religion, art, and other defining cultural traditions. Sidebars offer excerpts from various historical texts, while entries provide suggestions for further reading.

Book Synopsis Astrology: Its Worldview & Implications by : Joseph Howard Tyson
Download or read book Astrology: Its Worldview & Implications written by Joseph Howard Tyson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-05-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. H. Tyson writes that astrology is neither a science nor pseudoscience. It falls into the category of crafts which somehow work, though science can’t fathom why. In that respect it resembles acupuncture and Feng Shui (the Chinese art of proper arrangement.) Astrology holds that cosmic forces influence us, just as the moon affects the ebb and flow of tides. Since 6,000 B.C. learned astrologers have collaborated on a body of data which links planetary positions at birth with certain human traits. A birth chart summarizes the native’s personality characteristics and provides an indication as to how that person might fare in various departments of life. Astrologers help clarify clients’ aptitudes with the intention of facilitating their development. Natal charts may be conceived of as blueprints which encourage people to cultivate their strengths, overcome faults, and circumvent avoidable problems. Tyson’s book outlines the history and principles of astrology, then provides examples of its value by juxtaposing biographical sketches of Napoleon, Theodore Roosevelt, Empress Alexandra of Russia, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and others with their natal charts. Tyson argues for Earth’s inclusion into astrological theory. This globe under our very feet exerts great influence. He demonstrates how the slower-moving planets (Jupiter-through-Pluto) provide more accurate generational profiles than the “boomer,” gen-x-er, millennial classifications bandied about by pundits. In his chapter on Esoteric Astrology Tyson explains the Sixteen Astrological Ages of Humankind. Check out J. H. Tyson’s latest book for new insights into the prehistoric art of astrology.

In 1812 Neptune was in Sagittarius - oppo site Gemini and Mars made a conjunction with him. It the time of the Civil war Uranus was in Gemini and Mars made several conjunctions and Opposi tions with him. In 1898 Neptune was in Gemini and Mars passed him during the fall months, Uranus and Saturn were both in opposition to Gemini in transit of the sign Sagittarius, the sign ruling Spain, and Mars made a conjunction of both these planets at the beginning of the year. In 1914 Saturn was transiting the sign ruling the United States. Fortunately Saturn passed out and Jupiter passed in before we got into the World war. From the spring of 1942 until the spring of 1949 Uranus will be transiting Gemini. From the spring of 1942 until the summer of 1944 Saturn will be with him and the fiery Mars will make numerous conjunctions and oppositions of these two malig nant influences on the destinies of our country. Book Synopsis The Power of Stars by : Bryan E. Penprase
Download or read book The Power of Stars written by Bryan E. Penprase and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are some of the connections that bind us to the stars? How have these connections been established? And how have people all around the world and throughout time reacted to the night sky, the sun and moon, in their poetry, mythology, rituals, and temples? This book explores the influence of the sky on both ancient and modern civilization, by providing a clear overview of the many ways in which humans have used the stars as an ordering principle in their cultures, and which today still inspire us intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The book explores constellation lore from around the world, celestial alignments of monuments and temples, both from ancient and modern civilizations, and the role the sky has played in the cultures of the Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, Native American, Chinese, Mayan, Aztec, and Inca. Models of the universe from each of these cultures are described clearly, and each culture’s explanation of the stars, planets, and other celestial objects are described. The roots of astronomy and astrology are presented with original imagery and reproductions of ancient manuscripts that portray the structure of the physical universe as conceived by a diverse array of human cultures over the centuries. Our own scientific Big Bang cosmology and the origin of stars and elements are discussed in a philosophical context, to explore how we as modern people learn about the Universe, and incorporate the findings of science into our world views. A concluding chapter provides a summary of modern science's effort to unlock the celestial secrets from the sky and from past civilizations, and what these answers mean for us today.
