Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the controversial issue of securitization in a global, historical context. It traces its origins and compares evidence of securitization across countries, linking differences to variations in legal, political, and cultural regimes. By incorporating the history and current status of securitization (including sources of value and risk) with alternative markets and future outlooks for the global market, Buchanan provides an overall assessment of the costs, benefits, and sustainability of securitization in the global economy, particularly in the aftermath of the 2007-2009 financial crisis. The book also offers a roadmap for future research. As financial regulators around the world plan a sweeping overhaul of securitization markets with tough new rules designed to restore market confidence, it is essential to consider the global outlook for securitization.

Book excerpt: The object of this paper is to discuss the introduction of securitization in emerging markets and the lessons that can be drawn from the global financial crisis. In the first section of the document, Part I looks at the general advantages of securitization -- as perceived prior to the global crisis -- and the acceptance of U.S. (legal) institutions as role model. Part II explores the challenges faced by emerging markets in implementing the U.S. model. This pre-crisis assessment is based primarily on the analysis of the following three articles: DOUGLAS W. ARNER, Emerging Market Economies and Government Promotion of Securitization (2002); GEORGETTE CHAPMAN POINDEXTER & WENDY VARGAS-CARTAYA, En Rut Hacia El Desarrollo: The Emerging Secondary Mortgage Market in Latin America (2002); YUWA WEI, Asset-Backed Securitization in China (2007).In the second section of the document, Part III suggests several lessons that can be learned from the financial crisis. Part IV raises questions about the future of securirtzation in emerging economies.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the continuously evolving world of securitization The Second Edition of The Securitization Markets Handbook is a valuable resource for both experienced money managers trying to put a securitization strategy into place as well as newcomers looking to acquire a broad and strong foundation in this discipline. This edition takes a close look at the pre- and post-crash mortgage market and the mortgage-backed securities based on those mortgages, as well as other asset-backed securities including commercial paper or credit cards. The crash of the subprime market and the failure of the asset-backed markets offer an opportunity to learn about banking finance, specifically off-balance sheet finance, and the many costly mistakes that resulted in one of the most severe downturns in financial markets. With this book, you'll discover why certain mortgage and asset-backed securities imploded and others didn't. This new edition examines why the market failed and how the next crisis can be averted or made less severe. It also explains why securitization remains a primary source of capital for the mortgage market, credit card market, home equity market, auto loan market, and segments of the commercial paper market. Offers an informed overview of how the securitization market works, how to make money in it, and what's next for asset- and mortgage-backed securities after the crisis Contains new chapters on CDOs and SIVs, along with a history of the growth and crash of the subprime market, asset-backed securities, and home equity lines of credit Written by securitization experts Charles Stone and Anne Zissu Updated to reflect the current market environment, the Second Edition of The Securitization Markets Handbook offers clear, comprehensive guidance to these complex markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is upside down. The emerging market countries are more important than many investors realise. They have been catching up with the West over the past few decades. Greater market freedom has spread since the end of the Cold War, and with it institutional changes which have further assisted emerging economies in becoming more productive, flexible, and resilient. The Western financial crisis from 2008 has quickened the pace of the relative rise of emerging markets - their relative economic power, and with it political power, but also their financial power as savers, investors and creditors. Emerging Markets in an Upside Down World - Challenging Perceptions in Asset Allocation and Investment argues that finance theory has misunderstood risk and that this has led to poor investment decisions; and that emerging markets constitute a good example of why traditional finance theory is faulty. The book accurately describes the complex and changing global environment currently facing the investor and asset allocator. It raises many questions often bypassed because of the use of simplifying assumptions and models. The narrative builds towards a checklist of issues and questions for the asset allocator and investor and then to a discussion of a variety of regulatory and policy issues. Aimed at institutional and retail investors as well as economics, finance, business and international relations students, Emerging Markets in an Upside Down World covers many complex ideas, but is written to be accessible to the non-expert.

Book excerpt: In response to the volatility of capital flows since the mid-1990s, many emerging market economies have taken a variety of steps designed to “selfinsure” against volatile capital flows. One such measure has been the development of local securities and derivatives markets as an alternative source of funding the public and corporate sectors. This paper examines this self-insurance policy, focusing on the extent to which emerging markets have developed local securities and derivatives, and what key policy issues have arisen as a result.

Book excerpt: "This book fills a very important gap in the mindset of the bond structurer and the investor. Often, the two disciplines approach their tasks ignorant of the perspectives of the other side. But successful structuring requires providing the best value to investors in order to compete, and investors who don’t fully understand structuring will not remain investors for long. Highly recommended!" —Bennett W. Golub, Managing Director, BlackRock, Inc. "An excellent primer on asset securitization, clearly written in plain English and with straightforward mathematical expressions. This book is suitable for both business school students and structured finance market practitioners." —Joseph Hu, PhD, Managing Director, Structured Finance Ratings, Standard & Poor’s "In their new work Securitization: Structuring and Investment Analysis, Andrew Davidson et al. reinforce their preeminence in the alchemy of mortgage securitization. Anyone involved in mortgages neglects Andy’s work at his peril." —Richard T. Pratt, Chairman, Richard T. Pratt Associates; Former Chairman, Merrill Lynch Mortgage Corporation "This book provides an insightful and accessible exploration of securitized real estate markets. As such, it provides a valuable service to those active and interested in these burgeoning markets. The authors have done a wonderful job of gracefully integrating a vast and important subject matter. Accordingly, this book also makes for an excellent textbook for those universities offering one or more courses in this rapidly growing field." —Joseph L. Book excerpt: The central question addressed in Financial Innovations and the Welfare of Nations is how the transfer of financial innovations from developed to developing economies can nurture the dynamics of emerging capital markets. National capital markets can be positioned along a continuum ranging from embryonic to mature and emerged markets according to a decreasing "national cost of capital" criterion. In the introductory chapter Laurent Jacque argues that newly emerging countries are handicapped by a high cost of capital due to "incomplete" and inefficient financial markets. As capital markets graduate to higher level of "emergedness", their national firms avail themselves of a lower cost of capital that makes them more competitive in the global economy and spurs economic growth. Skillful transfer of financial innovations to emerging markets often encourages the deregulation of the country's financial services sector. This results into new conduits for a more efficient capital allocation process such as commercial paper, securitized consumer finance and other disintermediated modes of financing which out-compete traditional financial intermediaries (mostly commercial banks), reduce households' cost of living and conjointly fuel the dynamics of emerging markets. Our response to the central question of how the transfer of financial innovations can enhance the Wealth of Nations is to show that it reduces the cost of capital while not unduly increasing systemic risk. Part I examines the relationship between financial innovations and systemic risk of the international financial system.

Book excerpt: Back in the early 1990s, economists and policy makers had high expectations about the prospects for domestic capital market development in emerging economies, particularly in Latin America. Unfortunately, they are now faced with disheartening results. Stock and bond markets remain illiquid and segmented. Debt is concentrated at the short end of the maturity spectrum and denominated in foreign currency, exposing countries to maturity and currency risk. Capital markets in Latin America look particularly underdeveloped when considering the many efforts undertaken to improve the macroeconomic environment and to reform the institutions believed to foster capital market development. The disappointing performance has made conventional policy recommendations questionable, at best. 'Emerging Capital Markets and Globalization' analyzes where we stand and where we are heading on capital market development. First, it takes stock of the state and evolution of Latin American capital markets and related reforms over time and relative to other countries. Second, it analyzes the factors related to the development of capital markets, with particular interest on measuring the impact of reforms. And third, in light of this analysis, it discusses the prospects for capital market development in Latin America and emerging economies and the implications for the reform agenda.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asset Securitization is intended for beginners and market professionals alike who are interested in learning about asset securitization—its concepts and practices. It is designed so that the readers will come away with a fundamental but comprehensive understanding of the asset securitization market. As such, the book aims to provide a review of the market's development, necessary framework, potential benefits, and detailed descriptions of major asset securitization products. Part I of the book, which consists of four chapters, will discuss the fundamental concepts, the funding efficiency, the market participants, and the potential benefits of asset securitization. An analysis of mortgage finance will be provided in Part II, which consists of six chapters that cover a variety of topics from the description of many different types of residential mortgages to the securitization of different types of residential mortgages, including the now infamous sub-prime mortgages. Also included are important topics, such as prepayments, cash flow structure, maturity and credit tranching, and the trading and relative value of the various mortgage-backed securities. The three chapters in Part III will explain the other major asset securitization products, such as commercial mortgage-backed securities, credit card receivable-backed securities, auto loan-backed securities, and collateralized bond obligations. Part IV has two chapters: one reviews the collapse and the potential recovery of the asset securitization market, and the other describes the asset securitization efforts in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and China. Extensive tables and charts are presented to help illustrate a concept or describe a product. Neither analytical discussions nor investment strategies of the various asset-backed securities are included as they are not the focus of this book.
