Book excerpt: This report has been prepared in response to concerns that exposure to mercury from dental amalgam may adversely impact on health. The report aims to quantify mercury exposure from amalgam fillings, as well as exposure from other non-occupational sources; to assess the hazard posed by this exposure, estimating the exposure level which should be tolerable for most of the Canadian population; and to quantify the proportion of the Canadian population that may exceed the tolerable level. Two exposure assessment methods were used, one based on equations published by Olsson and Bergman (1992) and the other a deterministic multimedia approach by Richardson et al (1995). The report also includes a review of mechanisms of mercury uptake, tissue distribution, metabolism, and excretion by humans, and of the toxicology of mercury via ingestion, dermal absorption, and vapor inhalation.

Book excerpt: In this review, we have examined the scientific literature related to the benefits and possible adverse effects of dental amalgam and of alternative restorative materials. The information available is inadequate to determine whether dental amalgam poses any significant risk to the health of the population (except for relatively rare cases of allergy or hypersensitivity to amalgam. If low-level mercury does have adverse effects, they are most likely subtle changes in central nervous system functioning, which might cause small deficits in short-term memory, for example. Other health effects are, given current evidence, very unlikely to result from amalgam fillings. Any potential benefit of removing intact amalgams and replacing them with other materials is very uncertain. Health Canada's recommendations to reduce the use of amalgam in the primary teeth of children, in pregnant women, and in individuals with kidney disease are consistent with the uncertain evidence regarding possible effects of dental amalgam.(Extract)
