Book excerpt: This dissertation investigated the effectiveness of a newly designed intervention for adolescents with test anxiety. This CBT-based intervention is comprised of two parts: self-guided psychoeducational computer modules, and an online social networking group. The intervention was designed to provide adolescents with an effective means of reducing test anxiety symptoms, delivered through a familiar medium--the Internet. This study was conducted in classrooms in Houston, TX, with high school student participants. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: those receiving the computer modules component only, those receiving the computer modules and social networking group, and those receiving no treatment (control). Test anxiety levels were assessed with the self-report Test Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, et al., 1980). Changes in test anxiety levels over time were compared to changes in a measure of academic achievement. The author compared changes in test anxiety level among the three groups using repeated measures ANOVA. It was hypothesized that participants in the two treatment groups would show improvements in test anxiety symptoms over time, while those in the control condition would not. It was further hypothesized that decreases in test anxiety symptoms would correlate with increases in academic achievement. Participants in all three groups showed some decrease in anxiety symptoms. There were no statistically significant differences between groups; however, there were some intriguing trends in the computer module only group, which showed a clinically meaningful, but not statistically different, decrease in anxiety. There was no association between changes in test anxiety symptoms and academic achievement. Results of this study suggest that this intervention may not currently present an effective option for treating the symptoms of test anxiety. Results may be used to make data-driven improvements to address the limitations and unforeseen weaknesses of this intervention approach.

Book excerpt: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the United States. Although evidenced-based behavioral treatments are available, less than 20% of those with SAD receive treatment (Grant et al., 2005). The disparity between the number of individuals affected and those obtaining treatment is due to a number of factors, including limited accessibility to therapists practicing evidence-based interventions such as cognitive behavior therapy, geographic factors, and financial cost. Internet-based interventions may be utilized to overcome some of these barriers. Guided Internet-based therapeutic interventions have been demonstrated to be effective for social anxiety (e.g., Andersson et al., 2006). The optimal role (if any) of the therapist in such programs, including the amount of therapist time necessary for effective treatment, remains unclear. The purpose of this pilot study was to develop a novel Internet self-help CBT intervention and to assess the preliminary efficacy and acceptability of the program with minimal therapist support delivered through a common videoconferencing platform, for the treatment of SAD in adults. The intervention program is derived from an acceptance-based CBT program that utilizes traditional behavioral interventions (e.g., exposure) within the context of a model emphasizing mindfulness and psychological acceptance. Thirteen participants received the Internet-based self-help intervention consisting of eight weekly modules, and a brief weekly videoconferencing therapist check-in. Participants were assessed at pre-treatment, mid-treatment, and post-treatment on both outcome and process measures. Participants rated the treatment program as highly acceptable. The results indicate that participants experienced a significant reduction in SAD symptoms and improvements in functioning and quality of life. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Social media are pervasive in adolescent lives, filled with the potential for youth to experience both risks and opportunities. Social media provide a space for youth to address some of their most salient developmental tasks, such as identity exploration, developing relationships beyond members of their family, and finding places to meaningfully belong in a larger social environment. Social Media TestDrive (SMTD) is an educational intervention designed to develop youth (ages 9-13) knowledge and skills to engage in social media in ways that are safe, positive, prosocial, and fun, in order to maximize benefits while minimizing exposure to risks. SMTD is founded on a research-based definition of social media literacy and delivered through the established pedagogical vehicle of experiential learning theory. This dissertation rigorously evaluates SMTD to assess its effectiveness in developing social media literacy in youth. There are two studies within the dissertation. First, the four-step development (n = 8) and validation (n = 347) of the Youth Social Media Literacy Inventory (YSMLI) yielded an empirically tested, valid, and reliable inventory of objective questions regarding social media literacy knowledge to be used with youth ages 9-13. The YSMLI questions fill a gap in available assessments for both researchers and practitioners. Second, employing questions from the YSMLI results from a cluster randomized controlled trial (n = 435) provides evidence of the effectiveness of SMTD in developing social media literacy knowledge in young learners. This study is the first empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of SMTD. Increasing objective social media literacy knowledge and skills are a foundational first step towards demonstrating positive, safe, and prosocial behaviors in actual social media platforms. According to the SMTD theory of change, completing modules should develop knowledge and skills which will, in turn, affect attitudes, norms, and self-efficacy to ultimately behave in positive, safe, and prosocial ways in social media. The results of this study provide evidence that SMTD is building this foundation of knowledge.
