This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increased interest in predicting and ultimately preventing academic failure in children comes the need for effective preschool and primary school assessment. The first step in developing an effective assessment program is to select tests that will yield data needed for individual decision making. One factor that has been shown to contribute to the prediction of children’s academic achievement is visual-motor-integration skill. The Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test was developed in the 1980s to measure visual-motor-integration skill in preschool and early elementary school children. The assessment instrument utilizes six of the nine Bender-Gestalt Test designs, which are copied by the child. It may be administered in either individual or group format. The scoring system involves a six-point scale used to judge the overall quality of each design. Examiners will find the assessment instrument easy to administer, score, and interpret. Further, research has shown that the assessment instrument is a reliable and valid predictor of school achievement. This book will describe the development and refinement of the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test. In addition, it will provide detailed information and guidelines for administering, scoring, and interpreting the test. Specifically, there are separate chapters on administration and scoring, standardization and norming, reliability and validity, and interpretation. In short, the book contains everything psychologists and educational specialists need to know to use the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Version of the Bender-Gestalt Test.

Book excerpt: One of the most important practical problems in child psychology and psychia try is the differential diagnosis of emotional disorders. Until recently, the gener al mode of assessment had been to apply to children the characteristics of psychopathology that were evident in adults. In addition, there had been few assessment tools available for use with children aside from modified versions of adult instruments. Understandably, this approach was controversial, and dissat isfaction with it led to the more recent knowledge that adult and child problems may be manifested quite differently. The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders takes these factors into account much more extensively than previous editions. Furthermore, a great deal of research on methodology in child assessment procedures has emerged recently. Yet, in spite of these advances, practicing clinicians are still frequently at a loss in moving from the characteristics of the disturbed child before them to the final assign ment of a psychiatric diagnosis. The focus of this book is to outline the various methods of viewing and categorizing the wide range childhood psycho pathology, with special emphasis on the end product of making a differential diagnosis. Our goal was to make this book unique in several ways. First, we attempted to cover a wider range of disorders than is typical in currently available hand books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unparalleled resource for accurately diagnosing an array of childhood problems Psychodiagnostic Assessment of Children: Dimensional and Categorical Approaches provides comprehensive guidelines for assessing and diagnosing a broad spectrum of childhood disorders. In this groundbreaking new text, Randy Kamphaus (coauthor of the BASC and BASC-II) and Jonathan Campbell discuss both theoretical and practical aspects of the field. Their detailed coverage provides students and professionals with important research findings and practical tools for accurate assessment and informed diagnosis. This monumental new work begins by explaining dimensional (e.g., classification methods that emphasize quantitative assessment measures such as behavior rating scales) and categorical (e.g., classification methods that emphasize qualitative assessment measures such as clinical observation and history-taking) methods of assessment and diagnosis. It then highlights assessment interpretation issues related to psychological assessment and diagnosis. The remainder of the text covers constructs and core symptoms of interest, diagnostic standards, assessment methods, interpretations of findings, and case studies for all of the major childhood disorders. The disorders include: * Mental retardation * Learning disability * Autism spectrum disorders * Depression * Anxiety disorders * Traumatic brain injuries * Eating disorders * Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder * Conduct disorder * Oppositional defiant disorder * Substance abuse and dependence * Subsyndromal and hypersyndromal impairments

Book excerpt: Not long ago, conducting child assessment was as simple as stating that “the child gets along with others” or “the child lags behind his peers”. Today’s pediatric psychologists and allied professionals, by contrast, know the critical importance of using accurate measures with high predictive quality to identify pathologies early, form precise case conceptualizations, and provide relevant treatment options. Assessing Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities provides a wide range of evidence-based methods in an immediately useful presentation from infancy through adolescence. Noted experts offer the most up-to-date findings in the most pressing areas, including: (1) Emerging trends, new technologies, and implementation issues. (2) Interviewing techniques and report writing guidelines. (3) Intelligence testing, neuropsychological assessment, and scaling methods for measuring psychopathology. (4) Assessment of major pathologies, including ADHD, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, and depression. (5) Developmental disabilities, such as academic problems, the autism spectrum and comorbid pathology, and self-injury. (6) Behavioral medicine, including eating and feeding disorders as well as pain management. This comprehensive volume is an essential resource for the researcher’s library and the clinician’s desk as well as a dependable text for graduate and postgraduate courses in clinical child, developmental, and school psychology. (A companion volume, Treating Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities, is also available to ensure greater continuity on the road from assessment to intervention to outcome.)
