Book excerpt: Physical fitness is a key component to performance in the fire service. The problem was Provo Fire & Rescue did not know what elements needed to be included in an effective physical fitness program. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the necessary aspects of a comprehensive and effective physical fitness program in order to increase the physical fitness level of Provo Fire & Rescue. The research questions were (a) what are the standards needing to be addressed in a fire department physical fitness program, (b) should physical fitness programs be mandatory or voluntary, (c) how do the physical demands of the job indicate a need for a physical fitness program? The data was gathered to answer the research questions via an extensive literature review, and a questionnaire sent to the members of Provo Fire & Rescue. The results showed a clear direction for Provo Fire & Rescue to advance their physical fitness program. Several professional organizations are asserting recommendations with regards to physical fitness. The National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Firefighters, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs standards on wellness were reviewed. There are seven recommendations made based on information from these and other organizations. These recommendations give the administration of Provo Fire & Rescue ample information to improve the overall health and wellness of the organization.

As a result of this, many fire chiefs have either not started a physical fitness assessment program or they are thinking about changing their present assessment program. Book Synopsis Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac arrest can strike a seemingly healthy individual of any age, race, ethnicity, or gender at any time in any location, often without warning. Cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in the United States, following cancer and heart disease. Four out of five cardiac arrests occur in the home, and more than 90 percent of individuals with cardiac arrest die before reaching the hospital. First and foremost, cardiac arrest treatment is a community issue - local resources and personnel must provide appropriate, high-quality care to save the life of a community member. Time between onset of arrest and provision of care is fundamental, and shortening this time is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of death and disability from cardiac arrest. Specific actions can be implemented now to decrease this time, and recent advances in science could lead to new discoveries in the causes of, and treatments for, cardiac arrest. However, specific barriers must first be addressed. Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival examines the complete system of response to cardiac arrest in the United States and identifies opportunities within existing and new treatments, strategies, and research that promise to improve the survival and recovery of patients. The recommendations of Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival provide high-priority actions to advance the field as a whole. This report will help citizens, government agencies, and private industry to improve health outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest across the United States.

I wish I could make him understand that a loving good heart is riches, and riches is enough, and that without it intellect is poverty.” - Mark Twain, Eve's Diary Mark Twain’s short stories aren’t about his religious beliefs. Some of these challenges include the increased possibility of an unstable home situation, inadequate education opportunities at all levels, and a high chance of crime and victimization. Given this growing social, economic, and political concern, The Hamilton Project at Brookings asked academic experts to develop policy proposals confronting the various challenges of AmericaÕs poorest citizens, and to introduce innovative approaches to addressing poverty.ÊWhen combined, the scope and impact of these proposals has the potential to vastly improve the lives of the poor. The resulting 14 policy memos are included in The Hamilton ProjectÕs Policies to Address Poverty in America. The main areas of focus include promoting early childhood development, supporting disadvantaged youth, building worker skills, and improving safety net and work support.
