The research work started in 1991 and has been completed by a final publication in 2005. The content of the thesis is composed of introductory parts (giving the reader an introduction into the later to be discussed subject) and articles published by the author. At this point the author would like to draw the attention to the fact that, due to the rather lengthy process of completion of the presented thesis, the references in the first chapters have not been updated with recent new publications on the subjects discussed and therefore reflect the knowledge state at the time the articles were written. The key subject of the thesis is carbon materials. In order to initiate the reader into the subject to be discussed in the publications of the author, introductory chapters are found at the beginning of the present document. In the first chapter an historical overview on diamond and DLC is given. The history of diamond, starting with natural diamond and continuing with man made diamonds, is treated and examples of applications of diamond are described. Equally the history of Raman spectroscopy, an analysing method intensively used by the author, is presented. After the historic introduction, more technical background information is offered on the following subjects: carbon structure and properties ; Raman spectroscopy ; Diamond & DLC deposition methods Following these introductory chapters the scientific work accomplished by the author is presented. This is done introducing the different scientific articles published by the author. The first article deals with the deposition of diamond using the acetylene flame method. The key innovation presented by the author in this article is the use of a turbulent flame configuration, as the first researcher in this field, which allows for a quicker growth rate of the diamond deposit. The second article demonstrates the influence of flame turbulence on the growth of m.

Book excerpt: Diamond-like carbon coatings produced by Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII) and beamline Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) were synthesized and studied. Gas pressure and electrical current were used as variables to design four independent PSII test sets. Beamline IBAD samples were produced with a pre-optimized set of parameters. Profilometry measurements showed the films to have thicknesses between 1.44 +/- 09 and 1.64 +/- 04 microns and to possess very low roughness averages, ranging from 14 +/- 3 to 28 +/- 3 nm, which correlate with substrate surface roughness. Atomic Force Microscopy revealed that diamond-like carbon crystal sizes varied significantly with chamber pressure. Crystals were generally spherical in shape suggesting that films were highly amorphous. Microhardness and nanohardness test results showed the hardest films to be greater than 3 times the hardness of untreated steel. The elastic modulus of the films, measured during the nanohardness test, was directly related to film hardness. Fretting wear and Pin-on-Disk tests were performed to quantitatively assess the ability of films to resist wear. Fretting wear tests showed a dramatic decrease in friction for diamond-like carbon films with friction levels ranging from 10% to 30% of that of untreated steel. Pin-on-Disk tests revealed a significant improvement in wear resistance prior to stylus penetration into the substrate.

Book excerpt: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on silicon, fused silica, and silicon nitride substrates. The films produced were either undoped, made using a pure graphite target, or doped, using multi-component targets made from a combination of graphite and silicon, silicon nitride, titanium dioxide, or silicon monoxide. These films were evaluated for their potential use in biomedical applications, including coatings for artificial joints, heart stents, and bronchoscopes. The films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, ball-on-flat tribometry, contact angle measurements, and spectrophotometry. Film thickness was determined by optical profilometry. Film adhesion was checked by soaking the films in simulated body fluid (SBF) and monitoring the quality of the film surface at varying time intervals using an optical microscope. DLC coatings were produced with a root mean square surface roughness of less than 1 nm and a 0.08 lubricated coefficient of friction. Contact angles of water on the undoped films varied with deposition conditions, ranging from 65 to 88 degrees. Contact angles as low as 25 degrees were achieved by incorporating silicon monoxide dopant. DLC coatings were produced on fused silica having high transparency and showing no delamination after forty-three weeks of immersion in SBF. These results indicate that these films have potential as biomedical coatings.

Book excerpt: Diamond like carbon (DLC) films have gained grounds in the biomedical field as an inert, biocompatible, low friction and wear resistant coating and are widely used in heart valves, coronary artery stents, dental implants, knee prosthesis and other vascular devices. In addition, Ag nanoparticles/films can prevent the formation of biofilm on biomedical implants by degrading the metabolic activities like permeability and respiration and also impair DNA replicability. Thus, Ag-doped DLC (Ag-DLC) can serve as a multifunctional bio coating combining desirable antibacterial and physical/mechanical characteristics. In the present study, Ag-DLC films were synthesized utilizing a hybrid Plasma CVD and Magnetron sputtering process in a CH4/Ar glow discharge. Nanocomposite films containing Ag nanoparticles in an amorphous DLC matrix with various amounts of Ag were synthesized and characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Tribological experiments were performed to assess the frictional behavior and wear resistance of the Ag-DLC films as a function of Ag content. Anodic polarization experiments were conducted to characterize the electrochemical behavior of the Ag-DLC films. TEM results revealed that Ag nanoparticles of 4-7 nm in size were uniformly distributed in an amorphous DLC matrix. Microhardness of DLC films exhibited a hardness of 22 GPa and it gradually decreased with increasing Ag content in the films. Wear rate of DLC film was 1.9 x 10-8 mm3/Nm and it increased to 8 x 10-7 mm3/Nm for Ag-DLC (5% Ag) film. Electrochemical behavior experiments showed that Ag-DLC films exhibited an inert behavior compared to the pure silver.

Book excerpt: Recent discoveries enabling the growth of crystalline diamond by chemical vapor deposition offer the potential for a wide variety of new applications. This new book examines the state of the technology arising from these discoveries in relation to other allied materials, such as high-pressure diamond and cubic boron nitride. Most of the potential defense, space, and commercial applications are related to diamond's hardness, but some utilize its other qualities, such as optical and electronic properties. The authors review growth processes and discuss techniques for characterizing the resulting materials' properties. Crystalline diamond is emphasized, but other diamond-like materials (e.g. silicon carbide and amorphous carbon containing hydrogen) are also examined. In addition, the authors identify scientific, technical, and economic problems that could impede the rapid exploitation of these materials, and present recommendations covering broad areas of research and development.

Book excerpt: The studies covered in this dissertation concentrate on the various forms of diamond films synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, including microwave CVD and hot filament CVD. According to crystallinity and grain size, a variety of diamond forms primarily including microcrystalline (most commonly referred to as polycrystalline) and nanocrystalline diamond films, diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were successfully synthesized. The as-grown diamond films were optimized by changing deposition pressure, volume of reactant gas hydrogen (H2) and carrier gas argon (Ar) in order to get high-quality diamond films with a smooth surface, low roughness, preferred growth orientation and high sp3 bond contents, etc. The characterization of diamond films was carried out by metrological and analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results of characterization served as feedback to optimize experimental parameters, so as to improve the quality of diamond films. A good understanding of the diamond film properties such as mechanical, electrical, optical and biological properties, which are determined by the qualities of diamond films, is necessary for the selection of diamond films for different applications. The nanocrystalline diamond nanowires grown by a combination of vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method and CVD method in two stages, and the graphene grown on silicon substrate with nickel catalytic thin film by single CVD method were also investigated in a touch-on level.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Diamond and diamond-like carbon films, with their exceptionally good mechanical, chemical, and optical properties, are the best materials as protective hard coatings for electronic devices and cutting tools. The biocompatibility of these materials makes it suitable for bone implants. The wide range applications of these films are hindered because of the high compressive stresses developed during the deposition. Use of carbide and nitride interfacial layers has emerged as one of the methods to reduce the compressive stresses. The present research focuses on the study of different materials as the interfacial layers for diamond and tetrahedral amorphous carbon films. For tetrahedral amorphous carbon AlN, Ta, TiN, TiC, TaN and W were investigated as the interlayer materials. The interlayer was deposited at different substrate temperatures to study the temperature induced changes in the residual stress. The tetrahedral amorphous carbon with TiN interlayer deposited at 300°C and 600°C exhibited a maximum reduction in the stress. TiN and TiC were deposited as interlayer for the diamond films on Ti-6Al-4V alloy. TiC has improved the adhesion of diamond with the substrate and exhibited less compressive stresses compared to TiN.
