Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literatures, Cultures, Translation presents a new line of books that engage central issues in translation studies such as history, politics, and gender in and of literary translation. This is a culturally situated study of the interface between three forms of transtextual rewriting: translation, adaptation and imitation. Two questions are raised: first, how a broader rubric can be formulated for the inclusion of the latter two forms within Translation Studies research, and second, how this enlarged definition of translation enables us to understand the incompatibilities between contemporary Western theories of translation and East Asian realities, past and present. Recent decades have seen a surge of scholarly interest in adaptations and imitations, due to the flourishing of cinema and fandom studies, and to the impact of a poststructuralist turn that sheds new light on derivative literature. Against this backdrop, a plethora of examples from the East Asian cultural sphere are analyzed to show how rewriters have freely appropriated, transcreated and recontextualized their source texts. In particular, Sino-Japanese case studies are contrasted with Sino-English ones, with both groups read against evolving traditions of thinking about free forms of translation, East and West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, brands were the sole domain of owners, advertisers and marketers. Strategies were crafted in smoke-filled boardrooms and rolled out with little to no input from consumers. Times have changed. Today, consumers are the new owners. They have more information, more channels, more power and more choice but less time, less loyalty and less trust than ever before. Brands intersect every aspect of our lives, but the business of building brands is still misunderstood. Dim Sum Strategy presents a carefully curated selection of proven strategic tools, with insights and anecdotes from three decades working with some of the world's leading brands at the world's top agencies. The book is structured to follow the author's proven Brand Centered Management(TM) process, with a smattering of different "tools" split into four parts: Discovery, Definition, Direction, and Delivery. Each tool is presented in bite-sized, standalone chunks; you can read the book in stepwise fashion or cherry-pick in whatever order you wish--just like a dim sum meal. "This book is full of common sense. The kind of sense that isn't always common." --Andrew Robertson, President & CEO, BBDO Worldwide, Inc. "If you've had your fill of long-winded books on branding, then Dim Sum Strategy is for you. Filled with bite-sized nuggets of wisdom, it's the perfect format for time-stressed professionals. In other words, all of us." --Graham Kelly, Founder of Originate and former Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy, BBH, Saatchi & Saatchi, and TBWA "Peter Wilken brings great warmth, humanity, and vast experience to bear on his wide-ranging analysis of the myriad brand philosophies and tools out there. In an era where there is no 'one size fits all' solution, his Dim Sum Strategy is just what you need." --David Guerrero, Creative Chairman, BBDO Guerrero "I've read numerous books on brands and branding, but this one is refreshingly different. Peter Wilken, who has a wealth of experience in the field, has captured all the essentials right here and expressed them in an easy-to-digest manner. Bon appetit!" --Dr Wayne Lotherington, Founder & CEO, All sorts Habit Creation and author of How Creative People Connect

Book excerpt: Commercial aviation took shape in Hong Kong as the city developed into a powerful economy. Rather than accepting air travel as an inevitability in the era of global mobility, John Wong argues that Hong Kong’s development into a regional and global airline hub was not preordained. By underscoring the shifting process through which this hub emerged, Hong Kong Takes Flight aims to describe globalization and global networks in the making. Viewing the globalization of the city through the prism of its airline industry, Wong examines how policymakers and businesses asserted themselves against international partners and competitors in a bid to accrue socioeconomic benefits, negotiated their interests in Hong Kong’s economic success, and articulated their expressions of modernity.

Book excerpt: - European fashion meets Asian traditional clothing- A lavishly illustrated catalog on Asian textiles from the 1920s- Published to accompany an exhibition at the Baur Foundation in Geneva (details to be confirmed)European fashion was profoundly influenced in the early decades of the 20th century by the style, textiles, patterns and color combinations of Asian clothing. The discovery of the kimono, in particular, with its loose cut, fluid lines and broad range of decorations, captivated the great couturiers of the period. It enabled adventurous women in the Roaring Twenties to cast out their corsets and social straightjackets, while offering a new, daring kind of elegance with exotic overtones. From the meeting of these two sartorial cultures has sprung an exhibition and this catalog, in which the drawings of Paris fashion designers are compared with examples of contemporary East-Asian textiles from the Baur Foundation in Geneva. The wonderful garments discussed include the collections of kimonos and other Japanese clothes gifted by Sato Mariko (2008) and Sugawara Keiko (2015), as well as Chinese textiles that are the pride of the Foundation.
