Book excerpt: About the Book: ‘Ashwatthama - Return of the immortal’ is a story about Ashwatthama, a legendary warrior from Mahabharat times who was born with a gemstone on his forehead and blessed by Lord Shiva to become an immortal. He had fought in the Mahabharata on the losing side of Kauravas. After his despicable act of killing Parikshith in Uttara’s womb, Lord Sri Krishna takes away the gemstone on Ashwatthama’s forehead and curses him to live a miserable life for eternity with pain and stench. The gemstone taken away from Ashwatthama has many powers including ability to control Rudrasena - The army of Lord Shiva. The gemstone considered as a symbol of power passed the hands of many kings through millenia and rested in the hands of an Aghori sect in the present times. Pashupati, an Aghori of the same sect who also happens to be a Geneticist uses the powers of the gemstone to bring a cataclysmic end to the world as it exists to usher a new world. When Smriti, the head of the Locust control and Research departments identifies the source of genetically modified Locusts that have the ability to consume entire global vegetation in less than 6 months, she is hunted by Pashupati’s men in the forests of Nainital, Smriti gets saved by wandering Ashwatthama. A reluctant Ashwatthama gets drawn into a battle with Pashupati after learning that the latter is using his gemstone to destroy the world by invoking Rudrasena. Whether Smriti and Ashwattham are successful in stopping the GM locusts from ravaging the world vegetation, whether Pashupati is successful in invoking the Rudrasena and whether Ashwatthama is able to stop Pashupati forms the rest of the story. Right from birth to death we pass through uncertainties and mysteries. It is said that it is not important how long one lives, but how well one lives matters. The lives of those, who led life meaningfully, will denitely throw some light on the lives of others. Even the way a person behaves when death approaches him/her could be an enigma. It is unfortunate that many live in their utopia, as if they are eternal. It is thoughtfulness of a person to accept the death in a dignied way & gracefully. The author has narrated these issues effectively, narrating his personal experiences and that of various instances of well known personalities. It is the sincere hope of the author that it opens up the eyes of those who are heading on in their life ercely with a great speed without realizing the purpose of life. Living matters, so also the death matters. It is up to us to make it. Hope, this book will make some difference in the thinking of a reader.

Book excerpt: The revelation of timeless spiritual message of Lord Krishna is dramatically set in a battlefield, though it happened to be the only place where such a message had its poignance. Through its brilliant casting and superb plots the subtle difference between the ego and the spirit, between myth and reality becomes apparent. Thus the Geeta is a prenote to faciliate the seeker to recognize truth from untruth. It directs the Spirit`s ascent through winding mind alleys of conditioning, concepts and projections into the threshold of Absolute Truth. Rejecting the path of self-torture or escapism it suggests the Divine union in the market place--even in the mundane task of household chores. In the new light thrown by Sri Mataji Nirmala Devi on the subject, Yogi Mahajan gathers the dried-up leaves of the text so far burried under the weight of priesthood and brings them back to life for the seeker of Truth.

Book excerpt: High above the sky stands Swarga, paradise, abode of the gods. Still above is Vaikuntha, heaven, abode of God. The doorkeepers of Vaikuntha are the twins, Jaya and Vijaya, both whose names mean ‘victory’. One keeps you in Swarga; the other raises you into Vaikuntha. In Vaikuntha there is bliss forever, in Swarga there is pleasure for only as long as you deserve. What is the difference between Jaya and Vijaya? Solve this puzzle and you will solve the mystery of the Mahabharata. In this enthralling retelling of India’s greatest epic, the Mahabharata, originally known as Jaya, Devdutt Pattanaik seamlessly weaves into a single narrative plots from the Sanskrit classic as well as its many folk and regional variants, including the Pandavani of Chattisgarh, Gondhal of Maharashtra, Terukkuttu of Tamil Nadu, and Yakshagana of Karnataka. Richly illustrated with over 250 line drawings by the author, the 108 chapters abound with little-known details such as the names of the hundred Kauravas, the worship of Draupadi as a goddess in Tamil Nadu, the stories of Astika, Madhavi, Jaimini, Aravan and Barbareek, the Mahabharata version of the Shakuntalam and the Ramayana, and the dating of the war based on astronomical data. With clarity and simplicity, the tales in this elegant volume reveal the eternal relevance of the Mahabharata, the complex and disturbing meditation on the human condition that has shaped Indian thought for over 3000 years.

Book excerpt: The Mahabharat is renowned for its great battles, heroic men, and gods walking the pathways of mortals. However, the beating heart of the epic is often forgotten-the stories of its women. Many of these exceptional women appear in Song of Draupadi-the indomitable Satyavati, the otherworldly Ganga, the indestructible Kunti, and the tenacious Gandhari-but the passionate and fiery Draupadi rises above them all to grip the imagination of the reader. Born of a dangerous sacrifice, Draupadi and her brother Drishtadumna are called forth to avenge Drona's insult to their father. While Drishtadumna is expected to kill Drona on the battlefield, Draupadi's role is not set out, but she dreams of fire and blood. From beloved daughter and princess of Panchala to wife of the brave Pandavas and queen of Indraprastha, Draupadi finds herself exiled to the forest, humiliated and determined on vengeance. The novel is a symphony, in several keys, of her voice and those of the other women around her-arguing, pleading, reasoning, and often raised in righteous anger. The title masterfully retells the story of Draupadi, one of the most memorable characters from the epic Mahabharat. Song of Draupadi champions the voices of the exceptional women of Mahabharat. Ira Mukhoty is the author of bestselling titles addressing the erasure of women from mythology and history.

Book excerpt: • Olympus is the home of the Greek gods, much like Amravati of the Hindu devas. • Zeus, leader of Olympians, wields a thunderbolt like Indra, and rides an eagle like Vishnu. • The feats of the Greek hero Heracles, known to Romans as Hercules, reminded many of Krishna, as did his name, ‘Hari-kula-esha’ or lord of the Hari clan. • The Greek epic of a husband sailing across the sea with a thousand ships to bring his wife, Helen, back from Troy seems strikingly similar to the story of Ram rescuing Sita from Lanka. Is there a connection between Greek and Hindu mythology then? Does it have something to do with a common Indo-European root? Or maybe an exchange of ideas in the centuries that followed the arrival of Alexander the Great, when Greek emissaries travelled to the kingdoms of Mathura and Magadha? In this book, mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik turns his attention to ancient Greek tales, and explores a new world of stories. Long have Europeans and Americans retold Indic mythologies. It is time for Indians to reverse the gaze.
