Book excerpt: High above the sky stands Swarga, paradise, abode of the gods. Still above is Vaikuntha, heaven, abode of God. The doorkeepers of Vaikuntha are the twins, Jaya and Vijaya, both whose names mean ‘victory’. One keeps you in Swarga; the other raises you into Vaikuntha. In Vaikuntha there is bliss forever, in Swarga there is pleasure for only as long as you deserve. What is the difference between Jaya and Vijaya? Solve this puzzle and you will solve the mystery of the Mahabharata. In this enthralling retelling of India’s greatest epic, the Mahabharata, originally known as Jaya, Devdutt Pattanaik seamlessly weaves into a single narrative plots from the Sanskrit classic as well as its many folk and regional variants, including the Pandavani of Chattisgarh, Gondhal of Maharashtra, Terukkuttu of Tamil Nadu, and Yakshagana of Karnataka. Richly illustrated with over 250 line drawings by the author, the 108 chapters abound with little-known details such as the names of the hundred Kauravas, the worship of Draupadi as a goddess in Tamil Nadu, the stories of Astika, Madhavi, Jaimini, Aravan and Barbareek, the Mahabharata version of the Shakuntalam and the Ramayana, and the dating of the war based on astronomical data. With clarity and simplicity, the tales in this elegant volume reveal the eternal relevance of the Mahabharata, the complex and disturbing meditation on the human condition that has shaped Indian thought for over 3000 years.

Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to the “Jaya” algorithm, an advanced optimization technique that can be applied to many physical and engineering systems. It describes the algorithm, discusses its differences with other advanced optimization techniques, and examines the applications of versions of the algorithm in mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, electrical, computer, civil and structural engineering. In real complex optimization problems, the number of parameters to be optimized can be very large and their influence on the goal function can be very complicated and nonlinear in character. Such problems cannot be solved using classical methods and advanced optimization methods need to be applied. The Jaya algorithm is an algorithm-specific parameter-less algorithm that builds on other advanced optimization techniques. The application of Jaya in several engineering disciplines is critically assessed and its success compared with other complex optimization techniques such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), and other recently developed algorithms.

Book excerpt: There are forces behind the success of a person and of a family. We looked for reasons, traits, and traditions behind the pillar of the family. A woman who carried herself through decades of change with perseverance and guided generations to bright futures. Through listening to the stories of those she impacted, we only begin to see all of her hard work, strife, joy for life, and wealth of knowledge and love. This is a humble effort to paint a story of her life from the compilation of stories we listened to, the things we learned, and the legacies we strive to continue from the woman who raised us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of the language and culture of the Korowai, a Papuan community of treehouse dwellers in the rainforest of southern Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Korowai are a people who have historically been completely isolated from the world around them and have only recently come into contact with outsiders. The authors, who gained access to the tribe in their roles as Christian missionaries, examine the Korowai language and culture in a systematic and integrated way. They sketch the physical, cultural, historical, and linguistic backgrounds of the Korowai community. Also, they fully explicate the language, presenting in fine detail its phonology, morphology, syntax, and kinship terminology--as well as reproducing oral texts that show patterns of grammar, discourse, and culture. This text will be of value to both linguists and anthropologists, not only because it deals with a neglected and threatened society, but also because it does so by viewing (and documenting) the language and culture of that society in a methodical and holistic manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya has long been an area neglected by New Guinea Studies. Only in the late seventies, interest began to focus more intensively on this scientifically important border area between Austronesian and Papuan languages and cultures. In the early nineties, this led to the creation in The Netherlands of the Irian Jaya Studies programme ISIR, which organizes and coordinates multi-disciplinary research on the Bird's Head Peninsula. Within this framework, study of the peninsula has reached a peak, with research being conducted in the area by scientists from different disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, (ethno)botany, demography, development administration, geology and linguistics. The diverse perspectives of these disciplines are subject to constant internal debate. Through ISIR and other research initiatives, there is a growing body of data on and insights into the various disciplines concerned with this fascinating area, with each discipline developing its own specific perspectives on the Bird's Head. These perspectives were presented during the First International Conference Perspectives on the Bird's Head of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, organized by ISIR in cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences LIPI (Jakarta) and the International Institute for Asian Studies ILAS (Leiden) and held at Leiden University, 13-17 October 1997. Researchers were informed on current perspectives in many disciplines to facilitate integration of findings into wider, interdisciplinary frameworks and to stimulate international debate within and between disciplines. As a result of the Conference, the forty-two contributions in these Proceedings present a wealth of recent developments from various disciplines in New Guinea Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Elmslie traces events in Irian Jaya/West Papua from the departure of the Dutch in 1963 to December 1999. The majority of the indigenous people of the area consider themselves West Papuans living in the land of West Papua, a country incorporated into the Indonesian state without their consent or approval. Made up of Melanesian peoples, the western part of New Guinea is one of the least developed places on earth with the largest expanses outside the Amazon of untouched and, in some cases still unexplored, rainforest and wilderness. It is a region ripe for economic exploitation. Irian Jaya under the Gun chronicles the rapid changes that are taking place under the guise of Indonesian economic development and its generally pro-crony, pro-military, pro-multinational corporation, and anti-Papuan thrust. It describes what can happen to an indigenous population when insensitive governments and avaricious multinationals are more concerned about profits than the environment or the people inhabiting the land.

Book excerpt: From amethyst to obsidian, Basic Witches author Jaya Saxena explores the multi-faceted meanings and history behind eleven popular crystals in this relatable personal essay collection. Highly prized for their beauty, crystals can take the shape of jewelry, household objects, and an array of self-care products. But it’s the ideas they stand for that draw people to their raw forms. Like astrology, tarot, and modern witchcraft, crystals help practitioners understand themselves and the wider world around them. In this collection of sharply observed essays, Jaya Saxena reflects on—and challenges—the ideas associated with eleven popular stones, including unconditional love (rose quartz), happiness and success (citrine), balance (amethyst), self-care (black tourmaline), purity (pearl), imposter syndrome (pyrite), toxic positivity (carnelian), change (opals), traditional concepts of marriage (diamonds), presentation versus identity (obsidian), and death (amber). The result is a deeply personal book with universal appeal, exploring how we assign meaning and power to crystals in order to give meaning and power to our lives.

Book excerpt: Ved Vyasa did not write the Mahabharata. The epic that he wrote was called Jaya-Samhita. Containing some 8800 verses, it was a treatise on war and politics. It contained the truth about the Kurukshetra war. The word Jaya means victory and Samhita means collection. As the name implies, it explained the principles of victory. It answered the fundamental question, why some people win while others lose? The Mahabharata on the other hand is a combination of two words, the Maha meaning great and Bharata refers to Arjuna. The word Mahabharata when literally translated means the great Bharata or Arjuna. As is apparent by the name itself, it was written with the sole intention of glorifying Arjuna. The Mahabharata of today is the corrupt form of Jaya-Samhita. However, if one studies the Mahabharata minus the legends and supernatural phenomenon, replacing these with simple, scientific explanations then the original Jaya-Samhita reveals itself in all its glory. Buried somewhere under the 100,000 verses of the Mahabharata are the 8800 verses of the original Jaya-Samhita. This book is an attempt to unearth the truth. It is a modern interpretation of the Mahabharata. It is based on the Mahabharata but it is not the Mahabharata.
