Book excerpt: A METAPHYSICAL PICARESQUE ADVENTURE INTO THE GEOMANTIC MYSTERIES OF THE EARTH WITH ANGELIC ACCOMPANIMENT In 2095, three Light grid engineers undertake a world restoration tour of the esoteric energy body of the planet to fine-tune an upgrade that started in 2020. Their “fixer-upper” itinerary takes them to England, Montenegro, South Africa, Ethiopia, Colombia, Armenia, Pakistan, South Korea, Finland—14 stops in all. The Earth has been birthing a landscape of Light and Truth out of itself since 2020, but it needs some professional tweaking and housecleaning to complete its transformation. Some “parties” vigorously oppose this upgrade and have to be dealt with; others heartily support it. It’s been like that since the beginning of the Earth. Lars Jaanusson, a Boston book editor, narrates the fieldwork in a manner that is both whimsical and serious. “The tour was an immersion in mythopoesis. You find you’re living and working inside the world’s myths when you do this work. Much is at stake, but you have to stay light-hearted on the job,” he says. Lars and his two companions, Beatrice Goldoni from Italy and Bogdan Hazurov from Bulgaria, enjoy the technical assistance of two angelic orders. The Ofanim, jokey and amiable while brandishing huge swords of Light, and the Serafim, doing business as the fierce Valkyries of legend who take no prisoners among the enemies of the Earth. The planet’s upgrade, just finishing up in 2095, was scheduled at its inception, in fact, as early as its design phase. Many of its problems and enemies go back to that beginning too. Not everyone was in favor of a world with this much Light and Truth and so elegant a geometric design or “grid” in Light. That’s why much of the narrative recounts what it took to pull out the deep, resistant, dark-minded roots that have disturbed the Earth and humans for millennia. It’s an altogether different take on the Apocalypse.

Book excerpt: THE BOOK BEHIND THE FOURTH SEASON OF THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction. A Feast for Crows It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out. But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead. It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes . . . and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.

Book excerpt: A TEAM OF GEOMANCERS PROBE MEGALITHIC SITES FOR THE TRUE STORY OF THE GIANTS AND CYCLOPES OF MYTH AND THEIR RELEVANCE FOR TODAY Seasoned Boston book editor Edward Burbage vividly records the adventures of himself and two colleagues as they participate in the final dissolution of an old enemy of humanity, the healing of an antique wound, and the restoration of an equally old mythic but real figure. The pursuit of these goals takes them all over the planet, starting off in England but traveling to France, Spain, Ireland, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Peru, the United States, and finishing in the South Island of New Zealand on the top of a formidable snow-capped peak. The story is a myth-living evocation of many of the key themes of Western mythology, such as the Wounded Fisher King, the Dolorous Stroke, the grim Wasteland, the bright Avalon of the Summer Country, the numinous Castle of the Holy Grail, the Grail Knights who dedicate their lives to questing for the holy object, and the lingering, intriguing tales of Cyclopes, the one-eyed giants of humanity’s deep past, credited with building the world’s megalithic features. The story takes place in the ultra-modern setting of 2090 as they chase the possible reality and significance of Cyclopes for current times. Burbage and his companions couldn’t have better helpers. They’re tutored by an angelic order called the Elohim, humanity’s godparents, prime benefactors, and, it turns out, the fabled Cyclopes. They’ve preserved a heavenly sword for humanity, and that’s the centerpiece of the whole affair. The ending of the reign of domination by humanity’s perpetual enemy—Ahriman, also known as the Antichrist, all-time liar, destroyer, and champion “bad guy” of the world. Burbage’s team needs this sword because the outcome of these encounters affects the next phase of Earth’s scripted destiny—the rehabilitation of humanity’s alignment with the intended design of reality.

Book excerpt: A darkly lyrical and slyly ambiguous account of love, loss and fury. When Gautam Dogra is found murdered in his study one afternoon in the small hill station of Brooks Town, the police dismiss it as a relatively simple case. But Charlotte Hyde knows well that a murder never happens in a day ? it follows its own timeline. As Kerketta, Charlotte?s old retainer, always said, a murder is written into your life at the very beginning. As Charlotte begins telling the story of Dogra?s death, it soon becomes clear that his story can only be fully understood in the light of many other stories. Of her estranged daughter, Maddy, of the political climes in which they lived. Of lost hopes and lost loves, of small humiliations and disillusionments and, above all, of the slow incitement to violence that the terror of loss brings into quiet lives.

These stories depict love, affection, suppression, hope, and separation happening in human life. The story Decency of Patriarchy tells about a patriarchal society or community based on patriarchal lines. This is commonly seen all around. Look around and we will see traces of patriarchy in the air we breathe. Women are largely excluded or suppressed from the main spheres of their own life. The Renaissance tells the story of a Brahmin girl who resurrected from her fettered life. It shows the power of hope and humanism. The Rain tells the power of separation and agony. At the same time, it also shows the power of silent love. Nandu the little girl depicts innocence and affection in its natural sense. The agony of love is a story that draws the shades of unrealized love and its persistence in the human mind. Through these stories, the author wants to bring out light to humanity and hope which in turn provides mental peace. About the Author: Kadambari is the pen name of Silpa Shibu. Yet for women living in slums, there is no other option than to depend on someone. Based on fourteen months of intensive fieldwork with ten families in a Delhi slum, No One Will Let Her Live argues that women rely on moral strategies to confront the poverty and unstable relationships that threaten their well-being. Claire Snell-Rood breaks new ground by delineating the complex ways in which women set boundaries, maintain their independence, and develop a nuanced sense of selfhood that draws on endurance, asceticism, mobility, and citizenship.
