Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial Recharge of Groundwater focuses on artificial recharge of groundwater basins as a means to increase the natural supply of groundwater, along with the technical issues involved. Special emphasis is placed on the use of reclaimed municipal wastewater as a source for artificial recharge of groundwater. This book is comprised of 26 chapters organized into five sections. After reviewing the state of the art of artificial recharge of groundwater, the discussion turns to the fundamental aspects of groundwater recharge, including the role of artificial recharge in groundwater basin management, recharge methods, hydraulics, monitoring, and modeling. The next section considers pretreatment processes for wastewater and renovation of wastewater with rapid-infiltration land treatment systems and describes the health effects of wastewater reuse in groundwater recharge. A number of artificial recharge operations using reclaimed wastewater are then highlighted, focusing on cases in various countries including Israel, Germany, Poland, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States. The remaining chapters look at the extent of contaminant removal by the soil system and the fate of micropollutants during groundwater recharge as well as the legal and economic aspects of groundwater recharge. Research needs for groundwater quality management are also explored. This monograph is written for civil and sanitary engineers, agricultural engineers, hydrologists, environmental scientists, and research scientists as well as public works officials, consulting engineers, agriculturalists, industrialists, and students at colleges and universities.

Book Synopsis Renovating Secondary Sewage by Ground Water Recharge with Infiltration Basins by : Herman Bouwer
Download or read book Renovating Secondary Sewage by Ground Water Recharge with Infiltration Basins written by Herman Bouwer and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field project demonstrated the feasibility of renovating secondary sewage effluent by ground water recharge with infiltration basins. Maximum loading rates were obtained. With the schedules the system could infiltrate 300-400 ft/year using a water depth of 1 ft. Grassed basins had higher infiltration rates, and a gravel covered basin had a lower infiltration rate than a bare soil basin. Essentially complete removal of BOD and fecal coliform, and significant removal of phosphorus, nitrogen and fluoride were obtained. Hydraulic properties of the aquifer were evaluated by analog from the response of piezometric heads in the ground-water system to infiltration. These properties were then used in the design of a prototype system, which would yield renovated water at an estimated total cost of about $5 per acre-foot at the pump.
Book Synopsis Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Management by : A. L. Ramanathan
Download or read book Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Management written by A. L. Ramanathan and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrogeological aspect of groundwater science is universal and applied in nature to have a sustainable water resource development with social, economic, ecological, cultural and aesthetic background. Since 99% of the world's fresh available water is groundwater; yet, the majority of financial resources are directed to surface water found in rivers and lakes. This serious imbalance requires urgent redress. This volume is addresses the issue to facilitate the joint analysis of groundwater management studies and problems faced by scientist, engineers, managers and other scholars from natural and applied sciences. Significant financial support is required for basic groundwater research if sustainable development is to be a realistic goal. As a fresh water resource, groundwater has major advantages over surface water. This is the basic idea that explicitly appears in almost all paper of this book. The authors have tried to focus their task on those topics that seemed to us more urgent and relevant and have paid much attention to questions related to management of aquifers, groundwater pollution, the long-term problems and the key issues in developing countries, where majority of world population live and where at present enormous groundwater abstraction occurs. We (editors) have dissipated proper information in a systematic scientific manner to make the concept of groundwater management and sustainability understandable to everyone, through this book. The book provides a platform to bring together earth scientists, professionals from chemical and engineering science disciplines, public health professionals and social scientists involved with the management and development of groundwater resources. The book is expected to reflect the current understanding of all the issues related to management of groundwater resources and their sustainable use.

Book Synopsis Riverbank Filtration for Water Security in Desert Countries by : Chittaranjan Ray
Download or read book Riverbank Filtration for Water Security in Desert Countries written by Chittaranjan Ray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riverbank filtration is a low cost, yet efficient water treatment technology. It has most potential to provide safe drinking water to large cities located along rivers or lakes. In particular, it is ideal for large population centres in developing countries, where the cost of building extensive treatment facilities is prohibitive. Water filtration can be successfully implemented using naturally occurring sand and gravel along the river/lake banks. The cost of water produced by this means is much lower than that of water treated in conventional treatment plants. Authored by a multi-disciplinary team of experts, this volume addresses the scientific basis of the filtration process, and also numerous topics of importance for the planning, technical realization, and security of such plants. Their application for the removal of relevant chemical pollutants and a variety of pathogens is analysed in detail.
Book Synopsis Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge by : Christian Kazner
Download or read book Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge written by Christian Kazner and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Groundwater Set - Buy all six books and save over 30% on buying separately! Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge has been developed from the RECLAIM WATER project supported by the European Commission under Thematic Priority 'Global Change and Ecosystems' of the Sixth Framework Programme. Its strategic objective is to develop hazard mitigation technologies for water reclamation providing safe and cost effective routes for managed aquifer recharge. Different treatment applications in terms of behaviour of key microbial and chemical contaminants are assessed. Engineered as well as natural treatment trains are investigated to provide guidance for sustainable MAR schemes using alternative sources such as effluent and stormwater. The technologies considered are also well suited to the needs of developing countries, which have a growing need of supplementation of freshwater resources. A broad range of international full-scale case studies enables insights into long-term system behaviour, operational aspects, and fate of a comprehensive number of compounds and contaminants, especially organic micropollutants and bulk organics. Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge depicts advances in water reclamation technologies and aims to provide new process combinations to treat alternative water sources to appropriate water quality levels for sustainable aquifer recharge.
