Book excerpt: Art was not only a passion of Machiko Barrett, but also a destiny- a way of life she has known since her talent was discovered at 3-years-old. Caught in a turbulent storm of celebrity, scandal, and corruption, she disappeared from the art world only to re-emerge 15 years later. Her sheltered existence is disrupted when she is lured back to her one true passion: painting. While she struggles to discover her own identity through her art, she encounters a man who opens her eyes to the art of sensuality, and awakens the woman buried deep inside the broken girl.

Book excerpt: One of the major frustrations of my professional musical life has been the continual reminder of how few talented young string players, even those with exceptional instrumental skill, seem to truly understand the importance of reflecting their very own personal emotional experiences within the fabric of their musical interpretations and performances. Consequently I have devoted a great deal of my teaching efforts to helping these potential artists better understand the critical importance of this element and to develop the skills necessary to facilitate the natural merging of their inner-most emotions with their instrumental facility. My original purpose for authoring this book was to create a lasting way in which to share my resulting theories and methodologies with regards to this ever so critical ingredient to the process of successful musical communication. Interestingly, after a reasonable amount of academic research, it quickly became apparent to me that in spite of the existence of numerous available publications dealing with the need for musicians to play their instruments in an expressive manner and a myriad of additional books and articles attempting to describe and analyze the elements of sensuality no one had previously made any detailed connection or addressed, in writing, the impact of sensuality on music performance from either a technical or musical perspective. Now that this project is complete I must agree with the opinion of a number of my trusted colleagues and friends: many theories, concepts and methods described in this book could indeed provide benefits to a far broader audience than those exclusively focused on string playing.I am hopeful that performers from all of the arts as well as any interested and receptive individuals from all walks of life may find the thoughts I have expressed in this publication helpful in achieving the lives of their dreams.

It highlights visual art and the written word as media for representing human desire's relationship with the dream-state, make-believe, and symbolism. The title of the book is inspired by The Yellow Book, the periodical published in the 1890s and initially art directed by Aubrey Beardsley. While the color yellow represented the daringly salacious in the 1890s, today the color purple is synonymous with opulence and sensuality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claudia Moscovici asserts in Romanticism and Postromanticism that the Romantic heritage, far from being important only in a historical sense, has philosophical relevance and value for contemporary art and culture. With an emphasis on artistic tradition as a continuing source of inspiration and innovation, she touches upon each main branch of philosophy: aesthetics, epistemology, and ethics. The book begins by describing some of the most interesting features of the Romantic movement that still fuel our culture. It then addresses the question: How did an artistic movement whose focus was emotive expression change into a quest for formal experimentation? And finally, Moscovici considers the aesthetic philosophy of postromanticism by thinking through how the Romantic emphasis upon beauty and passion can be combined with the modern and postmodern emphasis on originality and experimentation.

Book excerpt: In this introduction to a different, more daring love style, ex-mistress Claudia Varrin celebrates the delightful and unexpected romance and sensuality of D&S (dominance and submission) and offers suggestions on how to add this delicious spice to a bland sexual relationship. From its light-hearted "party games" to its detailed anatomy lesson (imperative for anyone who plans to wield a whip), The Art of Sensual Female Dominance explores many D&S practices in a direct but sensitive way. Varrin communicates how these practices not only are sexually fulfilling but also can bring couples closer emotionally and spiritually. The book suggests ways in which a woman can introduce D&S into a relationship, gives advice on how to set up one's first D&S scene, and explores the emotions each partner experiences before, during, and after "playtime." There is instruction on the specifics of bondage, foot worship, and discipline, to name just a few of the fabulous fetish and fantasy chapters. Leather one night, lace the next, D&S can provide the techniques and confidence to turn you into a different woman every night, the possibilities limited only by your imagination.

Book excerpt: Reimagines black and brown sensuality to develop new modes of knowledge production In Sensual Excess, Amber Jamilla Musser imagines epistemologies of sensuality that emerge from fleshiness. To do so, she works against the framing of black and brown bodies as sexualized, objectified, and abject, and offers multiple ways of thinking with and through sensation and aesthetics. Each chapter draws our attention to particular aspects of pornotropic capture that black and brown bodies must always negotiate. Though these technologies differ according to the nature of their encounters with white supremacy, together they add to our understanding of the ways that structures of domination produce violence and work to contain bodies and pleasures within certain legible parameters. To do so, Sensual Excess analyzes moments of brown jouissance that exceed these constraints. These ruptures illuminate multiple epistemologies of selfhood and sensuality that offer frameworks for minoritarian knowledge production which is designed to enable one to sit with uncertainty. Through examinations of installations and performances like Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, Kara Walker’s A Subtlety, Patty Chang’s In Love and Nao Bustamante’s Neapolitan, Musser unpacks the relationships between racialized sexuality and consumption to interrogate foundational concepts in psychoanalytic theory, critical race studies, feminism, and queer theory. In so doing, Sensual Excess offers a project of knowledge production focused not on mastery, but on sensing and imagining otherwise, whatever and wherever that might be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-sixteenth century, at almost 60 years of age, Titian invented a new way of painting: the paint was applied to the canvas rapidly and freely and overlaid with brushstrokes that were both light and dense: the forms broke up and a great sensuality and profound spirituality became evident. Titian used an extraordinarily prescient technique to create engaging, stirring painting that in some ways seems to relate to the literary work of the poet Torquato Tasso and even take up the imaginary writings of Ludovico Ariosto published in Venice in the 1530s. Such a painting style had never previously been imagined and was so revolutionary that it was to influence many artists of subsequent centuries through to the modern age. Late Titian became the yardstick not only for younger contemporary painters like Tintoretto, Veronese and Bassano, but also great artists of subseqent cewnturies like Rubens, Rembandt, Velazquez, Gericault and Delacroix and on to the Expressionists.

Book excerpt: Marie Alonzo Snyder (modern dancer, choreographer, educator and scholar), presents a clear and helpful introduction and guide for anyone interested in learning about Zouk-the fast growing partner dance-in her debut book, The Art and Sensuality of Brazilian Zouk Dancing. Marie (a professional dancer for over three decades) has been dancing Zouk for the past 5 years and recently brought this beautiful, sensual dance to the Big Island of Hawai'i. "I arrived in Kona, Hawai'i on November 17, 2014 leaving behind a life of over 33 years on the East Coast. Like many others, I was called to this beautiful island," says Marie. "By the second week of my arrival, I began filling the island with Zouk. What began with one eager, Zouk goddess in training, has now become a heaven of gods and goddesses all enjoying the passionate music, the sensual movements, and the delicious connection that Zouk offers." This is a friendly book that people will enjoy reading even if you are not a dancer. Those already familiar with Zouk as well as those just learning will find value in this photograph filled book. Marie's passion is evident and her voice can be heard as you read. It's as if you are in the studio with an expert teacher, conveying her knowledge with deep devotion and expressiveness. Her voice shines through, inspiring the reader, making you want to learn more or start taking a class.
