Book excerpt: An arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. Arrythmias occur when the electrical impulses to the heart that coordinate heartbeats do not work properly, resulting in heartbeats being too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Arrhythmias 101 is an introductory guide to heart rhythm disturbances, helping trainees understand, recognise, diagnose and manage arrhythmias. Beginning with an introduction to normal and abnormal heartbeats, the following chapters examine different types of arrhythmia, the causes of fast and slow heartbeats, their diagnosis and management. ‘Clinical pearls’ are included throughout the book. Authored by Houston-based Professor Glenn Levine, this highly useful, easy to read text includes numerous full colour images and illustrations to enhance learning and understanding. Key points Introductory guide to arrhythmias for trainees Easy to read format, presenting causes, diagnosis and management of different types of arrhythmia Useful ‘clinical pearls’ included throughout Authored by Houston-based cardiology specialist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...The cardiac unit is a jungle, inhabited by fierce nurses, killer intensivists, marauding attendings, various flesh-eating specialists, sick patients, and lots of arrhythmias. –from the Preface Can you recognize the call of the normal sinus rhythm? Name the natural habitat of Multifocal Atrial Tachycardia or Ventricular Fibrillation? Are you well-versed in the proper care and feeding of Asystole and Atrial Flutter? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, then you need this trusty guide to help you identify and respond to arrhythmias in the veritable wilderness of the busy hospital ward. Created by a seasoned physician educator at a major urban medical center and inspired by the “field guides” used by birders, botanists and the like to identify flora or fauna in the wild, this new book offers a unique – and uniquely humorous -- approach to mastering the ever-vexing challenge of arrhythmia identification. Each arrhythmia is covered beginning with a sample ECG strip, followed by brief text describing its significant characteristics; where and when it is likely to be encountered (its “Habitat”); comments, questions and queries likely to be heard from physicians and other colleagues on the ward (the “Call”); and finally what steps the reader needs to take upon identifying the arrhythmia in a patient (“Care and Feeding”). Dr. Lader’s approach brings the sights and sounds of a modern hospital to life, enabling you to understand arrhythmia diagnosis and clinical response in context, and his offbeat, sometimes irreverent humor makes each detail memorable. Fifty self-assessment questions are included to help you master arrhythmia essentials and test your knowledge.

This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Podrid's Real-World ECGs combines traditional case-based workbooks with a versatile Web-based program to offer students, health care professionals, and physicians an indispensable resource for developing and honing the technical skills and systematic approach needed to interpret ECGs with confidence. ECGs from real patient cases offer a complete and in-depth learning experience by focusing on fundamental electrophysiologic properties and clinical concepts as well as detailed discussion of important diagnostic findings and relevant management decisions. Six comprehensive volumes encompass more than 600 individual case studies—plus an online repository of hundreds more interactive case studies (www.realworldECGs.com)—that include feedback and discussion about the important waveforms and clinical decision-making involved. From an introductory volume that outlines the approaches and tools utilized in the analysis of all ECGs to subsequent volumes covering particular disease entities for which the ECG is useful, readers will take away the in-depth knowledge needed to successfully interpret the spectrum of routine to challenging ECGs they will encounter in their own clinical practice. Dr. Philip Podrid, the primary author, is an academic cardiologist and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at Boston University School of Medicine and a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School. He has taught ECG interpretation for more than 35 years to medical students, house staff (interns and residents), cardiology fellows, physicians, nurses, and EMTs. Volume 4: Arrhythmias Volume 4, Arrhythmias--Part A: Core Cases presents 62 cases that are fundamental to the understanding and diagnosis of arrhythmias. Included are rhythm disorders involving the sinus node, those generated by the atrial myocardium, those involving the AV node or junction, and those that originate within the ventricular myocardium. An additional 58 cases for further study are available in a separate digital edition,Volume 4, Arrhythmias–Part B: Practice Cases.

Book excerpt: A significantly expanded third edition, this book provides a comprehensive and concise overview of cardiac arrhythmias and their ECG/telemetry manifestations, including the principles of cardiac electrophysiology, current concepts of pharmacology, clinical features, diagnoses, and state-of-the-art treatments. Additionally, the book emphasizes decision-making strategies in approaching each individual patient and the application of technical innovations in specific clinical situations. Organized into eight parts, beginning chapters introduce the concepts and principles of cardiac electrophysiology, unique rhythms, and ECG waves/signs. These chapters are designed to integrate emerging knowledge in basic science and clinical medicine. Subsequent chapters focus on the diagnosis of a variety of cardiac arrhythmias using non-invasive methodology. Throughout the book, chapters continue to analyze pharmacological and other approaches to therapy of specific arrhythmias, including supraventricular tachycardias, atrial fibrillation and flutter, ventricular arrhythmias, and bradyarrhythmias. Finally, the book closes with coverage on inherited cardiac arrhythmia syndromes including the long, short QT, and J-wave syndromes, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. The third edition of Management of Cardiac Arrhythmias, is an essential resource for physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students in cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, cardiac electrophysiology, and cardiac radiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the monographs by STRAUB (1924) and LENDLE (1935), this is the third contribution to the "Pharmacology of Cardiac Glycosides" within the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, which was founded by ARTHUR HEFFTER and con tinued by WOLFGANG HEUBNER. Because of the need created by the length of time that had elapsed since LENDLE'S work, the editorial board requested the rapid ap pearance of this 56th volume, which represents current knowledge of the pharma cology and clinical pharmacology of cardiac glycosides. In order to avoid any delay, numerous authors were invited to contribute because shorter contributions take less time to prepare and are consequently more up-to-date. The disadvantage is that some overlap between certain chapters could not be avoided, despite the editor's efforts. Overlapping can, however, actually be useful, in that differing opinions may be provided and topical issues discussed from varying viewpoints. This re minds the reader that scientific horizons in medicine should often be widened or revised. I would like to thank DR. ALANNA Fox and DR. K. ANANTHARAMAN for their help and advice in the revision of certain chapters. I am also grateful to Springer Verlag, and particularly to MR. WINSTANLEY and MR. EMERSON, for their contribu tion to the completion of this volume through translation and corrections. In con clusion I would like to thank MRS. WALKER, MR. BISCHOFF, MRS. SEEKER, and MR. BERGSTEDT of Springer-Verlag for their helpful support.
