Book excerpt: This manual, Army Doctrine Publication ADP 3-37 Protection December 2018, provides guidance on protection and the protection warfighting function. It establishes the protection principles for commanders and staffs who are responsible for planning and executing protection in support of unified land operations. The synchronization and integration of protection tasks enable commanders to safeguard bases, secure routes, and protect forces. The principal audience for ADP 3-37 is commanders and staffs. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as joint task force or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. In addition, trainers and educators throughout the Army will use this manual as a doctrinal reference for protection. This manual builds on the collective knowledge and wisdom gained through recent operations, numerous lessons learned, and doctrine revisions throughout the Army. It is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while accommodating new technologies and organizational changes. The following are brief chapter summaries and changes to ADP 3-37: - Chapter 1 defines and examines the role of protection and establishes protection as a warfightingfunction. This chapter also identifies the primary tasks of protection with changes to the previousprimary protection tasks. - Chapter 2 expands on the discussion of the 12 primary tasks of the protection warfighting function. The protection warfighting function enables freedom of action by preserving combat power through the integration of protection capabilities. This chapter also includes additional protection tasks that commanders and staffs should consider integrating throughout their protection plans.- Chapter 3 describes how planning is the first step toward effective protection. Through planning, commanders and staffs identify what the command must accomplish, when and where it must be done and, most importantly, why it must be accomplished-the purpose for the operation. - Chapter 4 discusses how protection during preparation activities is a continuous and enduring activity. During preparation activities, the protection focus is on deterring enemy or adversary actions that would affect combat power and on how the integration of protection tasks safeguards friendly forces, civilians, and infrastructure.- Chapter 5 discusses how the execution of protection is continuous and must occur throughout all operations to shape, operations to prevent, large-scale ground combat operations, and operations to consolidate gains, with a focus on deterring and preventing the enemy, adversaries, or hazards from actions that affect the force. Effective execution is aided by seizing the initiative through action and accepting prudent risk to exploit opportunities to gain positions of relative advantage. - Chapter 6 discusses the continuous assessment of protection throughout planning, preparation, operations to shape, operations to prevent, large-scale ground combat operations, and operations to consolidate gains.

Book excerpt: This manual, Army Doctrine Publication ADP 3-37 Protection July 2019, provides guidance on protection and the protection warfighting function. In addition, trainers and educators throughout the Army will use this manual as a doctrinal reference for protection.Protection is the preservation of the effectiveness and survivability of mission-related military and nonmilitary personnel, equipment, facilities, information, and infrastructure deployed or located within or outside the boundaries of a given operational area. Protection serves as an Army warfighting function. A shared understanding of the joint protection function enables Army leaders to integrate the Army's protection warfighter function with unified action partners. Army leaders must anticipate that joint support will be limited in larger-scale ground combat operations and must protect the force utilizing a combination of measures. The joint protection function focuses on preserving the joint forcefighting potential in four primary ways: 1. Active defensive measures to protect friendly forces, civilians, and infrastructure. 2. Passive defensive measures to make friendly forces, systems, and facilities difficult to locate, strike, and destroy when active measures are limited or unavailable. 3. The application of technology and procedures to reduce the risk of fratricide. 4. Emergency management and response to reduce the loss of personnel and capabilities due to accidents, health threats, and natural disasters. Protection is not linear - planning, preparing, executing, and assessing protection is continuous and enduring. The protection warfighting function tasks are incorporated into the operations process in a comprehensive, layered, and redundant approach to achieve enduring force protection. Protection preserves capability, momentum, and tempo which are important contributors to operational reach. Synchronizing, integrating, and organizing protection capabilities and resources throughout the operations process preserves combat power and mitigates the effects of threats and hazards to enable freedom of action. The prioritization of protection assets is situationally dependent and resource informed. The goal of protection capabilities integration is to balance protection with the freedom of action throughout the duration of military operations. This is achieved by integrating reinforcing or complementary protection capabilities in order to mitigate or assume risk for all identified and prioritized vulnerabilities. The collaboration, integration, and synchronization between the warfighting functions assist in identifying threats and hazards and mitigating their effects. Not all assets listed on the protection prioritization list receive continuous protection. Some critical assets only receive protection assets based on available resources. Determining and directing protection priorities may involve the most important decisions commanders make and their staffs support.

Book excerpt: The platoon leader and platoon sergeant are two of the most important leaders in the U.S. Army. The way platoon leaders and sergeants work together as a team can cause the success or failure of companies, battalions, brigades, and divisions. They represent the leading edge of leadership on and off the battlefield. On the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants build their platoons, empower squad leaders, integrate outside elements, and use troop-leading procedures to plan and lead. Off the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants prepare their platoon for combat through tough training. The platoon leader and platoon sergeant's ability to coach, teach, and mentor their Soldiers leads directly to the readiness of our formations. World-wide, platoon leaders and sergeants are personally leading the U.S. Army at the lowest level. This handbook is a guide for new leaders to help prepare them for a critical crucible of leadership that will determine the U.S. Army's ability to fight and win our country's wars.

The case studies detail the use of lethal and non-lethal fires conducted by US, British, Canadian, and Israeli forces against peer or near-peer threats. The case studies span the major wars of the twentieth-century and present the doctrine the various organizations used, together with the challenges the leaders encountered with the doctrine and the operational environment, as well as the leaders' actions and decisions during the conduct of operations. Most importantly, each chapter highlights the lessons learned from those large scale combat operations, how they were applied or ignored and how they remain relevant today and in the future.

The endurance of Army forces is primarily a function of their sustainment and is essential to retaining and exploiting the initiative. Sustainment provides the support necessary to maintain operations until mission accomplishment. The relationship between sustainment and operation is depicted in introductory figure-1 on page vi.Sustainment must be integrated and synchronized with operations at every level to include those of our joint and multinational partners. Sustainment depends on joint and strategic links for strategic airlift, sealift, intratheater airlift, and strategic and theater-level supply support. Sustainment depends on our host nation (HN) partners to provide infrastructure and logistics support necessary to ensure both maneuver forces and followon sustainment are delivered to right place, at the right time, and in an operable condition.

Book excerpt: Volume 5, Deep Maneuver: Historical Case Studies of Maneuver in Large-Scale Combat Operations, presents eleven case studies from World War II through Operation Iraqi Freedom focusing on deep maneuver in terms of time, space and purpose. Deep operations require boldness and audacity, and yet carry an element of risk of overextension - especially in light of the independent factors of geography and weather that are ever-present. As a result, the case studies address not only successes, but also failure and shortfalls that result when conducting deep operations. The final two chapters address these considerations for future Deep Maneuver.

Book excerpt: Volume 2, Bringing Order to Chaos: Combined Arms Maneuver in Large Scale Combat Operations, opens a dialogue with the Army. Are we ready for the significantly increased casualties inherent to intensive combat between large formations, the constant paralyzing stress of continual contact with a peer enemy, and the difficult nature of command and control while attempting division and corps combined arms maneuver to destroy that enemy? The chapters in this volume answer these questions for combat operations while spanning military history from 1917 through 2003. These accounts tell the challenges of intense combat, the drain of heavy casualties, the difficulty of commanding and controlling huge formations in contact, the effective use of direct and indirect fires, the need for high quality leadership, thoughtful application of sound doctrine, and logistical sustainment up to the task. No large scale combat engagement, battle, or campaign of the last one hundred years has been successful without being better than the enemy in these critical capabilities. What can we learn from the past to help us make the transition to ready to fight tonight?

Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the bound paperback from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these paperbacks as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound paperback, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With billions of computers in existence, cyberspace, 'the virtual world created when they are connected,' is said to be the new medium of power. Computer hackers operating from anywhere can enter cyberspace and take control of other people's computers, stealing their information, corrupting their workings, and shutting them down. Modern societies and militaries, both pervaded by computers, are supposedly at risk. As Conquest in Cyberspace explains, however, information systems and information itself are too easily conflated, and persistent mastery over the former is difficult to achieve. The author also investigates how far 'friendly conquest' in cyberspace extends, such as the power to persuade users to adopt new points of view. He discusses the role of public policy in managing cyberspace conquests and shows how the Internet is becoming more ubiquitous and complex, such as in the use of artificial intelligence.
