PLANET EARTH Under the control of a huge corporation, led by the power-mad Chairman. THE CADETS Trainee gladiators at the Nu-Topian Academy - where something is very, very wrong. SALT The grizzled old master of the armour workshop, with a secret in his past. THE STORY The book opens with an old knight on a distant planet, fighting to keep five medallions from the Armouronaut, a robot built from the armour of ancient knights and powered by the mysterious thirteenth medallion. It was created by the chairman to defeat the Amouron and destroy all it came into contact with. Ten years later, the four orphan apprentices are taken under Salt's wing at the Academy. As this happens, they realise they have all been harbouring suspicions that the Gladiator Games are fixed. As they set about investigating the games, Salt enlists them into the Amouron. When they start operating as knights for the first time the Chairman is so alarmed at what seems to be the re-emergence of his old enemies that he awakens the Amouronaut and sends it against them.

Book excerpt: The life of this actor, manager, playwright, and eighteenth-century gentleman is here refracted through the volurninous correspondence and analyses of roles, plays, and performances in this, no doubt final, biography of David Garrick. As the direct result of modern scholarship accessible only since the 1960s, it is now possible to appraise fully the life of this remarkable person who was born in Lichfield 19February 1717, a childhood friend of Samuel Johnson, who became the greatest English theatrical luminary who ever lived, and who when he died 20 January 1779was mourned by the nation and eulogized by Dr. Johnson as one whose death "eclipsed the gaiety of nations." For twenty-nine years (1747-1776) Garrick managed Drury Lane theatre, caring passionately for its well-being. His own acting set the pace for the performances, his discipline carried it on, and his theatrical innovations attracted the audiences on which the lives, hopes, and families of some 140actors, actresses, singers, dancers, and others depended. In addition, he wrote, adapted, or altered some 49 plays and wrote nearly 100 prologues. What emerges from this big, new critical biography is a fully drawn portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman, with a wide range of acquaintances, elegant socially, morally, and personally, and an engaging conversationalist with and respecter of women of mark and with his closest friends. He was also, as the evidence now shows, the solid link with his own age and the great dramatic artists of the past, from the Restoration playwrights to Massinger, Jonson, Shakespeare, and early English dramatists.

Among all the Puritan writings that have come down to us, none, perhaps, are more practical and conscience-reaching, than this notable work. The perusal of the following pages will prove it still to be a ministry, rich with glowing thoughts to warm the heart — a quiver well stocked with arrows to reach the conscience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of costume in Shakespeare production? Shakespeare and Costume in Practice argues that costume design choices are central not only to the creation of period setting and the actor’s work on character, but to the cultural, political, and psychological meanings that the theatre makes of Shakespeare. The book explores questions about what the first Hamlet looked like in his mourning cloak; how costumes for a Shakespeare comedy can reflect or critique the collective nostalgias a culture has for its past; how costume and casting work together to ask new questions about Shakespeare and race. Using production case studies of Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Tempest, the book demonstrates that costume design can be a site of experimentation, playfulness, and transgression in the theatre – and that it can provoke audiences to think again about what power, race, and gender look like on the Shakespearean stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witchcraft in Europe was believed to be a combination of sorcery and heresy. While sorcery attempts to produce negative supernatural effects through formulas and rituals, heresy is the Christian contribution to witchcraft in which an individual makes a pact with the Devil. In addition, heresy denies witches the recognition of important Christian values such as baptism, salvation, Christ and sacraments. In Early Modern European tradition, witches were stereotypically, though not exclusively, women. European pagan belief in witchcraft was associated with the goddess Diana and dismissed as "diabolical fantasies" by medieval Christian authors. Witch-hunts first appeared in large numbers during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was commonly believed that individuals with power and prestige were involved in acts of witchcraft and even cannibalism.
