Key Benefits - Students will have practice completing revising and editing tasks just like those used to determine their Stanford 10 Language score - Students will complete quizzes focused on the key language and vocabulary skills used to determine their Stanford 10 Reading score - Students can focus on each language, vocabulary, and grammar skill individually, which leads to a complete understanding of each skill - Students will complete revising and editing tasks just like those on the AIMS Writing test taken in Grade 5, with this early preparation giving students a significant advantage - Guided writing tasks will teach students how to approach writing tasks and will develop the skills needed to write effective stories, personal narratives, and essays Stanford 10 Test Preparation In Grade 4, the Stanford 10 test items are a major component of the AIMS Reading test. These questions are embedded in the AIMS Reading test and are used to rank students in two areas: Language and Reading. The Language score is determined based on questions that require editing or revising a short passage. Section 1 of this workbook develops editing and revising skills by giving students practice correcting and improving passages. By completing this section, students will develop the skills needed to achieve a high language score, become familiar with the question types on the state test, and gain experience completing revising and editing tasks. The Reading score is determined based on multiple choice questions assessing phonics, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. The quizzes in Section 2 of this workbook will develop the specific writing and language skills that students need to perform well on these questions. AIMS Reading Test Preparation The AIMS Reading test items include multiple choice questions that assess language and vocabulary skills. The quizzes in Section 2 of this workbook will improve student performance on these questions. By focusing on each skill individually, students will gain a full understanding of the skill. This understanding will allow students to answer these questions quickly and confidently, which offers the dual benefits of improving test performance and reducing test anxiety. AIMS Writing Test Preparation This book will prepare students for the AIMS Writing test that all Arizona students take in Grade 5. This early test preparation will ensure that students have the skills and confidence to perform well on this test. The AIMS Writing test includes writing and editing tasks similar to those in Section 1 of this book. The test also includes a writing task where students produce writing in response to a prompt. Section 3 of this workbook will prepare students for this part of the test. It provides guided practice for the types of writing tasks that students will encounter on the AIMS Writing test. Students will have practice planning and writing stories, personal narratives, and essays. The hints provided with the writing tasks will ensure that students score well when completing writing tasks.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

These books are designed to prepare your students for the Reading portion of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR). Many states measure achievement in reading by assessing student progress on benchmark objectives identified in their state standards. The state of Texas is one of those states. This book provides teachers with a variety of reading passages and questions that help assess student knowledge of reading standards tested on the STAAR. This practice book provides reading passages that consist of narrative text, expository text, and mixed passages. Expository passages include informative, biographical, autobiographical, and how-to selections. Mixed passages put two different kinds of writing together in one selection. Questions follow each passage. Each question is designed to assess a specific STAAR standard. Teacher Editions contain an answer key which tells you the type of passage, higher level vocabulary found in each passage, each standard tested along with its correct answer, and a list of possible extension activities. Teacher Editions also include a bibliography and a reading benchmark standards matrix showing which passage assesses which standards. Each of these workbooks provides hours of on-grade-level reading comprehension practice. Passages range in readability to allow for differentiated instruction. The grades 2-8 Reading Comprehension titles are great test preparation tools. These books are also great for home schooling!
