Book excerpt: This edition of Zeraḥyah's Hebrew translation of De Anima, Aristotle's monograph on the soul, is of major importance for the history of transmission of Aristotle's text in the Middle Ages. De Anima, commented upon by Greek philosophers such as Alexander of Aphrodisias and Themistius and Arab philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes, was a major source of inspiration for medieval Arab and Jewish philosophers. The Hebrew translations of Averroes' commentaries, prepared from 1189 on, were very influential in Jewish intellectual circles. One of the translators involved in this activity was Zeraḥyah ben Isaac ben Shealtiel ḥen, who also translated Aristotle's De Anima. This translation is extremely important since it is based on the same lost Arabic translation as Averroes' long commentary. The solution which Zeraḥyah's translation provides for the question of the authorship of this lost Arabic translation thus also holds good for Averroes' text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three centuries the treatise De plantis has been poorly represented by a Byzantine Greek translation of a mediocre Latin version made from the Arabic, which in its turn came from a Syriac rendering of the lost original. Since this Byzantine version was four times removed from the Greek exemplar, its authority was, to say the least, questionable. However, it was printed in 1539, and in spite of ubiquitous disapproval found its way into all subsequent editions of the Corpus Aristotelicum. In the present book the fragments of the Syriac version and the text of the four other translations (Arabic, Latin, Greek, Hebrew) are edited afresh. As far as possible, the manuscriptal evidence is complete, and each text is provided with an introduction and copious notes concerning philological problems. A few of the numerous commentaries are added and the vexed question of whether Averroes had written a commentary on De plantis is treated at some length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Critical Edition (together with introduction and English translation) of the Pseudo-Avicenna Liber Celi et Mundi, a Latin translation from Arabic of a paraphrase of Aristotle's De Caelo. It was translated in Spain in the later twelfth century, almost certainly by Dominicus Gundissalinus and Johannes Hispanus. The text circulated widely in Western Europe in the later Middle Ages, in collections of the early Latin translations of the Aristotelian corpus and of the Arabic commentaries. The Origins of the Liber Celi et Mundi are unknown but the editor suggests that the author may have been the prolific Arabic translator, Ḥunayn Ibn Isḥāq. This edition will be of particular interest to students of the Aristotelian tradition and the Arabic and Latin translators.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the Syriac text, edited for the first time, of the commentary on Aristotle’s Rhetoric by Bar Hebraeus (died 1286) in his Cream of Wisdom. The text is accompanied by an English translation, and the volume also includes an introduction, commentary, and three glossaries (Syriac, Greek and Arabic). Bar Hebraeus’ commentary is based on the lost Syriac version of Aristotle’s treatise, but the author also drew heavily on the commentary of Ibn Sina (Avicenna). The text therefore provides a unique insight into the nature of that lost version, and also exemplifies the way Bar Hebraeus blended the Aristotle of the Graeco-Syriac translation literature with the more recent philosophy of Ibn Sina.

Book excerpt: Aristotle's De Animalibuswas an important source of zoological knowledge for the ancient Greeks and for medieval Arabs and Europeans. In the thirteenth century, the work was twice translated into Latin. One translation was produced directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke. An earlier translation, made available as a critical edition in the present volume for the first time, was produced through an intermediary Arabic translation (Kitāb al-Ḥayawān) by Michael Scot (1175 - c. 1232). Scot's translation was one of the main sources of knowledge on animals in Europe and widely used until well into the fifteenth century. As a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic. The De Animalibusis composed of three sections: History of Animals(ten books), Parts of Animals(four books) and Generation of Animals(five books). Parts of Animalsand Generation of Animalswere published by BRILL as Volumes 5.2 and 5.3 of the book series ASL in 1998 (ASL 5.2) and 1992 (ASL 5.3). The present Volume 5.1.a contains the first section of Scot's translation of History of Animals: the general introduction and books 1-3, with Notes. Editions of the two concluding parts of History of Animals, ASL 5.1.b, books 4-6 and ASL 5.1.c, books 7-10, are in preparation. Complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin indices of History of Animalswill be published in due course.

Book excerpt: This book presents an edition of the Questiones super libro De Animalibus Aristotelis, a work by one of the greatest philosophers and physicians of the 13th century, Peter of Spain (later Pope John XXI, 1205-1277). He took as the basis for his work the translation from the Arabic made in Toledo around 1220 by Michael Scotus which included three important Aristotelian treatises. Preceding the critical edition, Dr Navarro offers an introduction to the person and works of Peter of Spain, the intellectual context of the 13th century characterized by Scholasticism and an Aristotelian Renaissance, and a short analysis of the linguistics and form of the Questiones. She also analyses the sources on which Peter drew, Greco-Latin, Arabo-Jewish and, of course, late antique and medieval treatises, showing that the text was not exclusively zoological in nature, but discusses important medical and philosophical topics, illustrating his extensive knowledge of both the Aristotelian corpus and 13th-century medicine. The text (divided into XIX books) is not a mere commentary about animals, but rather, as the title shows, a collection of questions in the Salernitan manner, the use of which was considered most appropriate for analysis and communication in the medieval scientific community to which Peter of Spain belonged. Alongside methodological and zoological problems, Peter of Spain discusses important questions disputed among the scholars of the period, including the location, hierarchy, motion, function and parts of the principal organs, the five senses, and many other medical issues such as reproduction, illnesses, or growth. Finally Dr Navarro includes a glossary that contains proper names (mainly those of the authorities and sources quoted by Petrus Hispanus), animal names (and their parts and substances), and the names of plants, metals, and the like.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle’s Meteorology: a twin set in Mediaeval Text Tradition. The Greek text of Aristotle’s Meteorology is in places highly problematic. Its edition by Fobes (1922), however, is a highlight in editorial technique. The Arabic version (c.800) is of quite different form and content. The two editions by Badawi (1961) and Petraitis (1967) were subject to considerable improvement. The present edition was done on the basis of the two extant Arabic manuscripts. The edition of the Latin translation (12th c.) from the Arabic has been constituted on the basis of 5 manuscript sources, out of 110 copies. The status of both the Arabic and the Latin texts was bad, but not hopeless: as the Latin version stands near to its Arabic predecessor, the text of the latter gives support to the editing of the text, as well as for the understanding of the contents. And this procedure works vice versa. The present edition of the texts has been completed with an Index of technical terms in Arabic, Greek and Latin and Registers on the Greek and Latin. Further a Bibliography and List of Latin manuscripts are presented.
