Book excerpt: This edition of Zeraḥyah's Hebrew translation of De Anima, Aristotle's monograph on the soul, is of major importance for the history of transmission of Aristotle's text in the Middle Ages. De Anima, commented upon by Greek philosophers such as Alexander of Aphrodisias and Themistius and Arab philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes, was a major source of inspiration for medieval Arab and Jewish philosophers. The Hebrew translations of Averroes' commentaries, prepared from 1189 on, were very influential in Jewish intellectual circles. One of the translators involved in this activity was Zeraḥyah ben Isaac ben Shealtiel ḥen, who also translated Aristotle's De Anima. This translation is extremely important since it is based on the same lost Arabic translation as Averroes' long commentary. The solution which Zeraḥyah's translation provides for the question of the authorship of this lost Arabic translation thus also holds good for Averroes' text.

Book excerpt: Jesuit Philosophy on the Eve of Modernity, edited by Cristiano Casalini, is the first comprehensive volume to trace the origins and development of Jesuit philosophy during the first century of the Society of Jesus (1540–c.1640). Filling a gap in the history of philosophy, the volume seeks to identify and examine the limits of the “distinctiveness” of Jesuit philosophers during an age of dramatic turbulence in Western thought. The eighteen contributions by some of the leading specialists in various fields are divided into four sections, which guide the reader through cultural milieus, thematic issues, and intellectual biographies to show the impact of Jesuit philosophy on early modern thought.

Book excerpt: Aristotle of Stagira was arguably the most famous of all Greek Philosophers. A pupil of Plato's Academy, he set up his own school and, unlike Plato, he emphasized natural philosophy, studying the heavens (he believed the earth to be spherical) and making meticulous dissections of many animals, by which he constructed a surprisingly modern system of classification. A true polymath, Aristotle's oeuvre comprises 150 volumes of work on a host of subjects, from politics to poetry, through ethics, theatre, music, biology and logic to physics and metaphysics. In 'De Anima', Aristotle focuses his extraordinary intellect upon the very centre of our being. What, he asks, is the Soul? How does it come to be? What is its nature and attributes? Is it immortal? Using logic and close reasoning, he constructs a comprehensive account of the soul's facets and functions, describing the manner in which the many physical attributes of corporeal existence are mediated by the intangible, elusive soul. R. D. Hicks was a classicist and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge University. His original translation covers all three books of 'De Anima' and is preceded by a 40-page introduction, giving the reader a clear perspective on Greek thought in Aristotle's time. A must for all those interested in Greek Classics and the development of Western Philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The De Anima (On the Soul) is the first and most general of Aristotle's biological works and as such is the most important work in the study of nature after the Physics of Aristotle. It is presupposed to Aristotle's Sense and the Sensible, Memory and Reminiscence, and his many other biological works. In this text, Aristotle discusses his predecessors' views of life, defines the principle of life ("soul"), discusses the principle sorts of living things (plants, animals, and human beings), and analyzes the chief activities of each sort of life. In the case of rational life, he shows that the ability to think implies an immaterial aspect to the human soul. The De Anima is necessary not only to the study of biology, but also advances the understanding of metaphysics, of ethics and of politics, and even of logic, insofar as logic directs the acts of the human mind. Like Coughlin's translation of Aristotle's Physics (also published by St. Augustine Press), this translation attempts to be literal and concrete. The edition includes the translation, introduction, glossary, index, and explanatory notes.

Book excerpt: Aristotle in Coimbra is the first book to cover the history of both the College of Arts in Coimbra and its most remarkable cultural product, the Cursus Conimbricensis, examining early Jesuit pedagogy as performed in one of the most important colleges run by the Society of Jesus in the sixteenth century. The first complete philosophical textbook published by a Jesuit college, the Cursus Conimbricensis (1592–1606) was created by some of the most renowned early Jesuit philosophers and comprised seven volumes of commentaries and disputations on Aristotle’s writings, which had formed the foundation of the university philosophy curriculum since the Middle Ages. In Aristotle in Coimbra, Cristiano Casalini demonstrates the connection between educational practices in a sixteenth-century college and the structure of a scholastic philosophical commentary, providing insight into this particular form of late-scholastic Aristotelianism through historiographical discourse. This book provides both a narrative of the historical background behind the publication of the Cursus and an analysis of the major philosophical and educational issues addressed by its seven volumes. It is valuable reading for all those interested in intellectual history, the history of education and the history of philosophy.

Book excerpt: Knowledge, however, is an attribute of the soul, and so are perception, opinion, desire, wish, and appetency generally; animal locomotion also is produced by the soul; and likewise growth, maturity, and decay. Shall we then say that each of these belongs to the whole soul, that we think, that is, and perceive and are moved and in each of the other operations act and are acted upon with the whole soul, or that the different operations are to be assigned to different parts?-from Book IThe writings of Greek philosopher ARISTOTLE (384BC-322BC)-student of Plato, teacher of Alexander the Great-are among the most influential on Western thought, and indeed upon Western civilization itself. From theology and logic to politics and even biology, there is no area of human knowledge that has not been touched by his thinking. In De Anima-which means, literally, On the Soul-the philosopher ponders the very nature of life itself. What is the essence of the lifeforce? Can we consider that plants and animals have souls? How does human intellect divide us from other animals? Is the human mind immortal? All these questions, and others that seem unanswerable, are explored in depth in this, one of the most important works ever written on such eternal questions. Students and armchair philosophers will find it a challenging-and rewarding-read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
