Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate The aim of this book is twofold: (1) to present briefly and clearly the theory of argumentation, (2) to furnish a sufficient number of complete debates for a thorough course in analysis and briefing. The discussion of argumentative theory has been condensed, therefore, and, while illustrated to the point of clearness, is suggestive rather than exhaustive, in order that it may be more fully tested in a study of the selections. Some emphasis has been placed upon the principles of logic for the reason that a knowledge of formal logic on the part of the student cannot be presumed. Furthermore, considerable space has been devoted to a study of evidence as it is found in the courts of law. This material will justify itself for the reason that the legal mind is the one best adapted to debate and for the reason that the debater who confines himself within the limitations imposed by the courts not only builds up a stronger argument but is also better prepared to destroy an opposing argument. The selections have been taken from great debates on critical and living issues of American history, politics, and law. For several reasons they will be found well adapted for analysis and briefing. In the first place, they were delivered by men long practiced in controversy, by men thoroughly trained in life's school of practical affairs. In the second place, the questions debated were at the time of the discussions, and still are, of vital moment to the American people. Hence they are of strong interest to every thoughtful student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discussion and Debate: An Introduction to Argument Upon the premise that many of the methods and pro cedures are common to both forms of argument, the author has integrated his treatment of the processes of discussion and debate. Except in a few descriptive chapters specifically con cerned with types of discussion and debate, the interrelation of the two forms is clearly shown. This has necessitated a few innovations. For example, a single brief is used to serve the purposes of both discussion and debate. This integration should help the beginning student to understand and apply basic procedures to differing argumentative situations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Argument and Debate Hence the proposition, Resolved, That unemployment is not the result of large-scale industry, is incorrectly phrased, because it requires the affirmative to deny the positive contentions of the neg ative. To cast this sentence into proper form, the not should be Omitted. The following proposition contains the same fault in a less Obvious form: Resolved, That the present neutrality act is satisfactory. Here the affirmative would be defending the status quo instead of recommending a change. The proposition Should be recast and limited, possibly in this form: Resolved, That the present neutrality act Should be amended to include the former embargo provisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Argumentation: For High Schools and Academies The increasing interest taken in debate by the larger high schools and academies has prompted the preparation of this Manual of Argumentation. There has seemed to be need of a book that would present in a clear and simple way the elements of debate to that large class of students who are not advanced enough to master the rather difficult college text-books on the subject, but who are deeply interested in debating because it appeals to those instincts which are the basis of oratory and as old as the race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation: Revised and Augmented The study of argumentation has increased so rapidly in schools and colleges during the ten years since the first edition of this book was published that it is no longer necessary to justify the educational importance of the subject. Nor is it necessary now to explain in detail the kind of argumentation taught in this book. For these reasons a large amount of justificatory and explanatory material which filled the early pages of the first edition has been removed. On the other hand, in the ten years since the Principles of Argumentation appeared, it has become steadily clearer that the principles of analysis needed restating for greater accuracy and simplicity; that the difficult subject of evidence, especially refutation, should be given fuller treatment; that the material in the chapter on brief-drawing could be simplified and clarified by rearrangement and a different emphasis; that persuasion needed much more detailed exposition; and that, perhaps the most marked need of all, the importance of rhetoric in argumentation should be given insistent emphasis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Argumentative Writing This book arises out of certain beliefs concerning the study of argumentation, which, though perhaps not wholly novel, have as yet found no recognition in the lit erature of the subject. The first of these beliefs is that the principles of argumentation should be derived by the student from its practice before the practice is made to conform to the principles. In short - one may as well acknowledge it - a firm faith in the so-called inductive method as applied to argumentation lies at the root of this treatise. Such a faith implies, of course, that the student should be asked to dissect out logical formulae for himself from his own unconscious reasonings, using them, when discovered, to render those reasonings more exact. The construction and the rough analysis of arguments would, similarly, precede the formulation of any princi ples of persuasion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Debate Index This index was begun as a card index to the debaters' manuals in the Reference Department of this Library. The increasing number of such manuals and the frequent requests for material on debates made it seem desirable to combine in one list the indexes to all the manuals, thus bringing references to all the material on one subject together, and saving the time required to consult the index of each book. The card index has been so useful here that it has been printed, in the hope that, incomplete as it is, it may also be useful elsewhere. It will be seen that it does not index single debates published separately, but is merely a combined index to the books listed at the beginning. Under each subject are given the proposition for debate, page references to the manuals, and a note indicating the material to be found there, whether briefs, references, specimen debates or synopses of debates. The Debate book of this Library, included in the list of books indexed, is a loose leaf book containing briefs and references copied from various sources or supplementing lists to be found elsewhere. The Carnegie Library Reference lists referred to are less complete manuscript lists compiled in response to requests.
