Book Synopsis Argentina, Economic Memorandum: The main report by : World Bank
Download or read book Argentina, Economic Memorandum: The main report written by World Bank and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the difficult economic situation facing Argentine policymakers at the end of 1983 as a new government assumed power. The country's experience with stabilization and economic liberalization is reviewed, distinguishing between the 1976-78 period-when rapid devaluations, a reduction of the fiscal deficit and the easing of price and financial controls helped stimulate exports and growth-and the period after October 1978 when inconsistencies between exchange rate, import liberalization, wage, and fiscal policies produced a deep recession, high levels of inflation, and a serious balance of payments and external debt crisis. Despite present difficulties, the report concludes that the Argentine economy possesses important elements of long-term strength, which, with sustained economic recovery and sound domestic policies, should permit a resumption of growth, at the same time that the burden of external debt is gradually reduced. The report recommends a number of medium-term measures to improve fiscal management, including better tax administration, providing adequate export incentive to both agriculture and industry, and raising the efficiency of the financial system in mobilizing and allocating domestic savings.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy Of Argentina by : Monica Peralta-ramos
Download or read book The Political Economy Of Argentina written by Monica Peralta-ramos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic developments in Argentina over the last half-century present a puzzle to observers: Before World War II, the nation's per capita income and standard of living were comparable to those in countries like Canada and Australia; today, Argentina is submerged in deep economic, social, and political crises. In analyzing the events that led to this reversal, the author enhances our understanding of the phenomenon of arrested economic development in Argentina and similar developing countries. Dr. Peralta-Ramos approaches the problem with a dialectical interpretation of contemporary Argentinian history, examining crucial economic and political developments since 1930 from the standpoint of class interests in conflict. She discusses early government strategies for industrialization and their consequences for economic growth and institutional stability, maintaining that state policies generated a struggle for the appropriation of income and, ultimately, for control of the state, not only between the middle classes and the urban working class but also between the agrarian and industrial sectors of the bourgeoisie. The ensuing political instability led to further fluctuations in economic policy, to an erosion of institutional legitimacy, and, eventually, to state terrorism. Ongoing political crisis, war, and military rule, as well as soaring speculation and dwindling capital, hastened the downward spiral of the Argentinian economy. Dr. Peralta-Ramos offers in this book an innovative theoretical approach for examining how power relations can inhibit economic development and produce a fragile institutional system that threatens democracy.

Book Synopsis Latin America’s Cold War by : Hal Brands
Download or read book Latin America’s Cold War written by Hal Brands and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Latin America, the Cold War was anything but cold. Nor was it the so-called “long peace” afforded the world’s superpowers by their nuclear standoff. In this book, the first to take an international perspective on the postwar decades in the region, Hal Brands sets out to explain what exactly happened in Latin America during the Cold War, and why it was so traumatic. Tracing the tumultuous course of regional affairs from the late 1940s through the early 1990s, Latin America’s Cold War delves into the myriad crises and turning points of the period—the Cuban revolution and its aftermath; the recurring cycles of insurgency and counter-insurgency; the emergence of currents like the National Security Doctrine, liberation theology, and dependency theory; the rise and demise of a hemispheric diplomatic challenge to U.S. hegemony in the 1970s; the conflagration that engulfed Central America from the Nicaraguan revolution onward; and the democratic and economic reforms of the 1980s. Most important, the book chronicles these events in a way that is both multinational and multilayered, weaving the experiences of a diverse cast of characters into an understanding of how global, regional, and local influences interacted to shape Cold War crises in Latin America. Ultimately, Brands exposes Latin America’s Cold War as not a single conflict, but rather a series of overlapping political, social, geostrategic, and ideological struggles whose repercussions can be felt to this day.
