Book excerpt: The Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae), also known simply as the Argentine tegu, is a species of large lizard native to South America, particularly found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The common name for these reptiles comes from the contrast between their black and white coloring. The Argentine black and white tegu is described here along with some of its defining features and facts. - The black and white look of these tegus is due to the contrast between the black body and the white bands or stripes that run along the back and the tail. They share a trait with many other reptiles, the forked tongue, and have a sturdy, muscular body. - The black and white tegus native to Argentina are among the largest of any tegu species. Some individuals may reach even bigger sizes, but on average they reach 3-4 feet in length and 10-15 pounds. - Tegus eat a wide variety of different foods. Their diet consists of both animal and plant products. They could eat anything from insects and worms to birds and eggs to fruit and vegetables. - Characteristics: People generally attribute intelligence and inquisitiveness to these lizards. They can live in burrows and are nocturnal, but during the warmer months you can find them out and about during the day. - Argentine black and white tegus inhabit a variety of environments, from forests to grasslands to savannas. Because of their versatility, they can flourish in both tropical and subtropical climates. - Ecological concerns have been raised about the introduction of the Argentine tegu, which has become an invasive species in some areas. They may have an effect on the native animal and plant life. - Because of their eye-catching appearance and placid demeanor, Argentine black and white tegus are sometimes traded as exotic pets. However, they need special treatment, such as a large enclosure with the right temperature and humidity. It's essential to note that in some areas where they are invasive, efforts are made to control and manage their populations to protect native wildlife. You should research the laws in your area and make sure you have the resources to properly care for an Argentine tegu before deciding to bring one into your home as a pet.

Book excerpt: The Argentine black and white tegu, Salvator merianae, is a nonnative species that has invaded parts of Florida. The potential impacts of this species on native Florida wildlife are not yet known. This study looks at the stomach contents of 169 S. merianae captured between 2011 and 2013 in south Florida to infer potential impacts of S. merianae and spatial or seasonal shifts in diet. Analysis of 169 GI tracts showed that S. merianae is an omnivorous, terrestrial forager with a broad dietary range which includes insects, fruits, plants, snalis, crayfish, carrion, birds, small mammals, turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs and eggs. S. merianae diet composition varied with capture habitat, the fattest tegus were collected from disturbed/agricultural areas and these samples contained, primarily, gastropods and insects. Tegu dietary habits threaten local endangered and state listed species such as the American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, and the Cape Sable seaside sparrow, Amodramus maritimus mirabilis. Dedicated funds and efforts need to be focused on the species to limit its further spread and future impact on native species.

Book excerpt: In terms of land size, Argentina is the second largest country in South America and the ninth largest country in the world. It may be found in the southern hemisphere and stretches all the way from the Andes mountains in the west to the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Because of its vastness and geographical diversity, the climate of the country varies drastically from one location to the next; for example, the climate in the north of the country is subtropical, while the climate in the south is subpolar. The climate in the middle region of Argentina is classified as moderate, whereas the climate in the western portion, which includes the Andes, is classified as cold and arid. In addition, Argentina is home to a large number of rivers, such as the Paraná and the Colorado, as well as a large number of lakes, including Lake Buenos Aires. The distinct topography and climate of this area each play an important part in the development of the country’s myriad ecosystems and animal life. In the pre-Columbian era, indigenous peoples including the Mapuche, Guarani, and Quechua lived in what is now Argentina. This time period is considered to be the beginning of Argentina’s history. Conquistadors from Spain began arriving in the area in the 16th century and establishing colonies, which eventually led to centuries of Spanish dominance. In the 19th century, after Argentina had fought a number of wars for independence, the country finally achieved its independence and became an independent nation. Throughout the course of the 20th century, the nation experienced both times of progress and stability as well as periods of political instability, tyranny, and economic upheaval. Today, Argentina is a democratic nation with a rich culture and history. It is also well-known for its contributions to several fields of human endeavor, including the arts, literature, and sports

Book excerpt: The Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae) is a large species of omnivorous lizard that has been introduced to Florida via the exotic pet industry. S. merianae has established several populations throughout Florida, including within Everglades National Park, threatening numerous protected species such as the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) and Cape Sable seaside sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus mirabilis). Since 2014, the United States Geological Survey's Early Detection Rapid Response (EDRR) program has used baited camera traps to continually monitor the invasion of S. merianae within and around Everglades National Park, amassing a dataset of >1 million photos. We describe methods for evaluating this dataset to investigate activity patterns of both invasive S. merianae and native mammal species that may be impacted by their presence. We find that S. merianae is most active during the heat of the day, with reductions in detection from November through February. We find S. merianae's peak activity times do not coincide with the active times for three of the four mammal species evaluated. Findings will guide trapping efforts, and further inform the potential ecological impacts of S. merianae in their invasive range.
