Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Surgery, Vol. 10 Although Sir William Roberts discredits altogether the existence of a phosphatic diathesis, he has recorded one case which is, for me, a good example of it in a mild form. I will reproduce this case, with its distinguished author's comments, before proceeding to the narration of my own. Copious Deposit of Triple Phosphate in Fresh Urine and in association with Neurasthenia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hospital Gazette and Archives of Clinical Surgery, 1877, Vol. 2: A Semi-Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery IT would conduce greatly to a better understanding of the action of neurotics if it were borne in mind that they are agents which in each case affect only certain nervous functions. There is no neurotic in existence which affects the dei'viiiis system, that is, the whole of it, unless in the one way of causing death. In opium, for example, we have a drug which specifically influences more nervous functions, perhaps, than any other one agent that can be. Named; and yet, should we enumerate them all, they would constitute but a small number of the great multitude oi nervous operations. The nervous system can never be acted upon as a unit like a single muscle, which either contracts or relaxes, or even like a single organ, as the heart, whose action, as a whole, may either be stimu lated or depressed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Clinical Surgery, Vol. 1: A Periodical Devoted to Surgery in All Its Special Departments; December 1876 I was then fully confirmed in my original impression that the deep obstruction was mainly if not entirely spasmodic. The blade of Maisonneuve which had been passed, could only cut up to and yet it had been easily followed by a solid steel sound number 31. The bare fact, however, that cutting had been done, more or less, would warrant the inference that the obstruction was organic and had been removed by the 2: blade of M. Maisonneuve. It was a matter ofgreat regret that a more prolonged trial with a large sound had not been made before resorting to the knife, but this was now unavailing, and the question of the true nature of the obstruction was necessarily left in doubt. The operation was completed at 3 p. M. Of the 29th of October, having occupied one and a-half hours. A suppository of quin. Sulph. Gr. X and morph. Sulph. Was adminis tered and the cold water coil applied. At 8 P. M. Patient suffers from neuralgi'c flashes in both hips, quite severe; has frequently suffered in the same way during attacks of re tention. At to P. M. Passed water inf/ill stream, but with consider able pain. Four hours after, (30th, 2 'a. Had a sharp chill, last ing an hour; followed by fever and sweating. Suppository quinine IO gr., and morphia repeated. At to A. M. Again passed water in full quantity, with much less pain. At-tz o'clock, (two hours after urination, ) had another chill, but much less severe than the first. Mental depression very great. Some sciatic pain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 10: October, 1918 History analysis has not been as extensively performed as we would wish and in future we hope to enlarge that field. In the few subjects in which this has been done prior to the patients' discharge, it has greatly improved the histories and increased the amount of facts recorded. The system at the Presbyterian as presented in the following pages, has been the result of the combined efforts of the entire staff and not the product of any one man, and its success is due to my assistants on the Staff and in the Record Room, whose intelligence has been great and whose loyalty to the Hospital and the patients and whose enthusiasm for and devotion to their work, have contrib uted toward the final result. That we have had the means of develop ing this elaborate system is due entirely to the generosity of the managers, who have contributed the funds for the purpose. This book was released on 2008-04-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data mining aims at finding interesting, useful or profitable information in very large databases. The enormous increase in the size of available scientific and commercial databases (data avalanche) as well as the continuing and exponential growth in performance of present day computers make data mining a very active field. In many cases, the burgeoning volume of data sets has grown so large that it threatens to overwhelm rather than enlighten scientists. Therefore, traditional methods are revised and streamlined, complemented by many new methods to address challenging new problems. Mathematical Programming plays a key role in this endeavor. It helps us to formulate precise objectives (e.g., a clustering criterion or a measure of discrimination) as well as the constraints imposed on the solution (e.g., find a partition, a covering or a hierarchy in clustering). It also provides powerful mathematical tools to build highly performing exact or approximate algorithms. This book is based on lectures presented at the workshop on "Data Mining and Mathematical Programming" (October 10-13, 2006, Montreal) and will be a valuable scientific source of information to faculty, students, and researchers in optimization, data analysis and data mining, as well as people working in computer science, engineering and applied mathematics.
