Since its first publication in 1982, Modern Architecture Since 1900 has become established as a contemporary classic. Worldwide in scope, it combines a clear historical outline with masterly analysis and interpretation. Technical, economic, social and intellectual developments are brought together in a comprehensive narrative which provides a setting for the detailed examination of buildings. Throughout the book the author's focus is on the individual architect, and on the qualities that give outstanding buildings their lasting value. For the third edition, the text has been radically revised and expanded, incorporating much new material and a fresh appreciation of regional identity and variety. Seven chapters are entirely new, including expanded coverage of recent world architecture.Described by James Ackerman of Harvard University as "immeasurably the finest work covering this field in existence", this book presents a penetrating analysis of the modern tradition and its origins, tracing the creative interaction between old and new that has generated such an astonishing richness of architectural forms across the world and throughout the century.

Book Synopsis History of Modern Architecture by : Leonardo Benevolo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations. Let it be said at once that the format of this work is richly handsome: it is a two-volume boxed set comprising 844 pages and well over 1,000 high-quality illustrations, and it reflects throughout its publisher's conviction that good design is an essential, not superficial, part of bookmaking. Beyond that, it should be emphasized that this work is not another facile cultural tour of modern architecture. It is a serious and original study of the beginnings and development of modernism in which the pictorial aspects are designed to aid in the communication of the author's closely reasoned formulations, rather than to gloss over a lack of substantive content. The book is a translation of the third Italian edition, published in 1966. Benevolo, who is on the faculty of architecture in Venice, has earned an international reputation as a historian of architecture and town planning, and his publications embrace the span of time from the Renaissance to the foreseeable future. One such publication, The Origins of Modern Town Planning (The MIT Press, 1967), may be read as a prelude to the present work as well as an independent contribution. Perhaps more than any other architectural historian in our time, Benevolo has made a determined effort to place developments in design and planning in their proper social and political settings. Indeed, the author argues that the development of the modern movement in architecture was determined, not by aesthetic formalisms, but largely by the social changes that have occurred since about 1760: "After the middle of the eighteenth century, without the continuity of formal activity being in any way broken, indeed while architectural language seems to be acquiring a particular coherence, the relations between architect and society began to change radically.... New material and spiritual needs, new ideas and modes of procedure arise both within and beyond the traditional limits, and finally they run together to form a new architectural synthesis that is completely different from the old one. In this way it is possible to explain the birth of modern architecture, which otherwise would seem completely incomprehensible...." This second volume is concerned with the modern movement proper, from 1914 to 1966. The author emphasizes the unity of the movement, rejecting the usual treatment that allots to the individual architects separate and unconnected biographical accounts.Benevolo remarks at one point, "When one talks about modern architecture one must bear in mind the fact that it implies not only a new range of forms, but also a new way of thinking, whose consequences have not yet all been calculated." His main concern is to provide a more exact calculation of those consequences.

Built from humble elements—branches, twigs, straw, bamboo—and fulfilling a wide variety of intentions—sometimes structural, sometimes sculptural, sometimes sacred—their fantastical creations resonate with an innate natural beauty. Natural Architecture Now features all-new site-specific installations by an international list of contributors. From an engineered oasis and climbing structure in Joshua Tree National Park to an intricate bamboo installation on top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to a residential mud structure prototype created by Architecture for Humanity Tehran, each project points a way forward for architects to engineer a new organic simplicity of structure and form.

Four architectural projects are used as a base through which a series of graphical representations are organized to tell the story of each design. Rich colors, diverse textures, strong compositional layouts, and contemporary typefaces are all brought together to form a creative modern architectural portfolio. More information on how many of these illustrations were created can be found on Alex's website, www.visualizingarchitecture.com.

Book excerpt: GOOD DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE NOW. One of the most important quite dominant processes in architecture is design process, and the goal of architecture design is to obtain good design. Good design has double meaning, aesthetic and ethic. In architecture the two should be united as a single goal that a design process should strive for. Moreover, an architectural product does not only effect its client and architect. On a broader level, architectural products also effect their surrounding environments. In a large scale, they may even have an effect on the economy and the social and political condition. The question is : How does an architectural design attain the label ‘good design’? We tried to find the answer through a round table discussion by inviting the two groups of professionals in Indonesia: practitioners and academics. What are their thought on this matter ? You can peruse them in the main coverage of Archinesia vol.5. Book excerpt: CITY, PEOPLE and ARCHITECTURE No matter hom impressive or iconic building or tall skyscraperis upon the skyline of a city, these buildings are concieved with people as their users. Yet the question is, for which layer of citizenship do they serve ? Have the stakeholder of the built environment give adequte attention towards the lives of those in between the cities’ sprawl of structures ? The topic of Archinesia vol.10 is “City, People and Architecture”, in which we try to reassess the position of architectural projects apart from being iconic attractors in the cityscapes. We ought to examine the role of architects in the ever-crucial process of creation within an increasingly populous contect. Without understanding how architects impact people, the profession will fatally disconnect itself from society.
