This book was released on 2007 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2003, evaluative testing was undertaken at four sites in the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) for the purpose of evaluating the potential for these sites to yield significant information about the prehistory of the PCMS and to better manage its cultural resources. The work was conducted under a cooperative agreement with the Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC), National Park Service. Three sites are multicomponent historic and prehistoric and the fourth is prehistoric with a historic rock art inscription. Surface mapping, artifact analysis and subsurface testing were implemented at each site. Archival research and geophysical surveys were conducted at two of the historic sites.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 2002, evaluative testing was undertaken at a large multicomponent site for the purpose of evaluating the potential of this site to yield significant information about the prehistory and history of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS). The work was conducted under cooperative agreement between the National Park Service, Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC) and Fort Lewis College (FLC). The site, 5LA3421, was divided into four areas for the purpose of this project. Archeological investigations at the site included surface mapping, surface artifact collection, geophysical surveys and limited site testing. This very large site possesses several cultural components. The two that are the best documented and received the bulk of the investigations are early 19th century homestead and Late Prehistoric Stage habitation site. An earlier prehistoric component was identified in test units and in shovel tests, but the date of this component has not been determined although it is possible that it dates to the Middle Archaic. Magnetic susceptibility tests provide further support for the presence of buried soils in some areas of the site. The geophysical surveys added to the documentation through the identification of pathways and concentration of buried artifacts that imply specific activity areas. Archival research of the GLO platt maps shows the land was patented by Henry LePlatt in 1927. Evaluative testing combined with surface investigations and geophysical surveys demonstrate that the site has a great potential to yield significant information about the history and prehistory of the PCMS, and it is recommended that the site is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

This book was released on 2007 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between July 25 and November 11, 2000, archaeological investigations were conducted at three sites located on the United States Army Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in southeastern Colorado. The goals of the research were to assess the impact of military traffic on the extant archaeological record of each site and to characterize the subsurface context of archaeological materials within the affected areas. The field research included the excavation of 130 test units, the interpretation of test unit stratigraphic profiles, and the collection of data on surface artifact distribution, temporal/cultural context, and site integrity. Impact from mechanized maneuvers was assessed through surface observation, subsurface context, and soil compaction analysis.
Book Synopsis On the Edge of Purgatory by : Bonnie J. Clark

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeastern Colorado was known as the northernmost boundary of New Spain in the sixteenth century. By the late 1800s, the region was U.S. territory, but the majority of settlers remained Hispanic families. They had a complex history of interaction with indigenous populations in the area and adopted many of the indigenous methods of survival in this difficult environment. Today their descendants compose a vocal part of the Hispanic population of Colorado. Bonnie J. Clark investigates the unwritten history of this unique Hispanic population. Combining archaeological research, contemporary ethnography, and oral and documentary history, Clark examines the everyday lives of this population over time. Framing this discussion within the wider context of the changing economic and political processes at work, Clark looks at how changing and contesting ethnic and gender identities were experienced on a daily basis. Providing new insights into the construction of ethnic identity in the American West over hundreds of years, this study complicates and enriches our understanding of the role of Hispanic populations in the West.

Book excerpt: This document and four parallel volumes, which collectively cover the entire state of Colorado, have been prepared by various organizations under contract to the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists. The respective regions addressed by the five documents are defined according to hydrologic criteria and coincide with the four major drainage basins within the state: Colorado River, Rio Grande, South Platte River, and Arkansas River. The headwaters of these four great rivers occur within the state of the Continental Divide. Becuase of the sheer size of the area, and also due to various cultural considerations, the Colorado River watershed has been divided into upper (northern) and lower (southern) regions, and thus fiver rather than four documents have been generated.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1 hard copy document and 1 CD-ROM; 4 3/4 in.; 10.1 MB. ABSTRACT: In 1996, the Army removed a trailer from the National Register eligible site of Brown's Sheep Camp (5LA5824). Subsequent inspection revealed noticeably disturbed historic deposits, and the Army entered into an Interagency Agreement with MWAC to determine the extent of damage to the site. Overall, backhoe and other digging disturbed 68 square meters of the ground surface around the trailer location, resulting in the exposure of sediments containing late 19th and early 20th century artifacts. Three large piles of dirt and debris (totaling approximately 13 cubic meters of sediment), located nearby, were found to contain similar artifacts. Thirty-nine square meters of excavation units were placed in and around the disturbed areas with the goal of learning about the nature of the disturbance as well as the historic deposits themselves. Two main deposits were located and explored: a shallow midden and a large deep refuse pit. Analyses focused on the pit suggest intense deposition during or after the late 1920s, followed by one or more additional episodes. The assemblage supports interpretations of ranch occupants as focused on sheep production, reliant on self-produced fresh foods (but consuming imported goods as well), and including ranch workers as well as their families.
