Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreaming the Great Brahmin explores the creation and recreation of Buddhist saints through narratives, poetry, art, ritual, and even dream visions. The first comprehensive cultural and literary history of the well-known Indian Buddhist poet saint Saraha, known as the Great Brahmin, this book argues that we should view Saraha not as the founder of a tradition, but rather as its product. Kurtis Schaeffer shows how images, tales, and teachings of Saraha were transmitted, transformed, and created by members of diverse Buddhist traditions in Tibet, India, Nepal, and Mongolia. The result is that there is not one Great Brahmin, but many. More broadly, Schaeffer argues that the immense importance of saints for Buddhism is best understood by looking at the creative adaptations of such figures that perpetuated their fame, for it is there that these saints come to life.

Book excerpt: Walker argues that previous translations have got it wrong, because they have failed to realise that Nostradamus was writing in an esoteric language called the 'green language'. Where previous translations have seemed to stretch a point to make a quotation fit an historical event, Walker reveals the prophet's true prophecies regarding the American and French revolutions, the Franco-Prussian, First, Second, and Third world wars, earthquakes, floods, the Anitchrist and the end of the world. Properly seen, Walker argues, Nostradamus is the greatest Western prophet to commit his prophecies to writing since the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: All journeys have a beginning. All heroes have an origin. No one can succeed alone. On the southern edges of continental Ulandir an ancient evil roils against its bonds. Shadows creep where the light once held sway and creatures, both freshly felled and long since dead, now walk once more in thrall. Yet, this is only the preamble to Térrtha's end times. There is still a chance that catastrophe can be avoided, slim though it be. Touched by fate, and united through circumstance, a quintet of disparate individuals find themselves at the heart of this nightmare. Although each of these five are skilled in their own way, questions remain. Can they become more than what they are now? Will they surpass their limitations and overcome their demons? How can mere mortals defeat something that even the gods fear? Heroes of Thered's Field is the first book in an epic fantasy series replete with action and abounding with grit. Warning: This material contains instances of graphic violence, vulgar language, explicit sexual content, sexual assault, and other such profanities. It is intended for mature audiences. Beta Reader Reviews: Sean: "This book combines emotional characters, visceral combat, and a slight pinch of humour to tell a story that leaves me wondering what is going to happen next. This book, in contrast to many modern stories, pulls no punches in regards to the content or prose. Something that I find refreshing. Overall, I found this book to be quite an enjoyable read, like a fast-paced Game of Thrones without the intrigue." 4/5 Stars Brad: "I found this work to be captivating, as the story goes along it draws you in to the plight of its characters within this enthralling fantasy world. It left me wanting more." 4/5 Stars

Book excerpt: A dark hyper-comedy set in London in the late 1990s during the last gasp of the newspaper wars just before the dot-com tidal wave--about two female journalists at opposite ends of their life and work who become locked in a fierce tango of wills and whose lives are forever changed by their (not-so-) brief (head-on) encounter. At the novel's center--a legendary prize-winning war correspondent (called in her day "The Newsroom Dietrich" because of her luminescent beauty) now in her eighties, at the end of her career, who, over the decades, as the intrepid golden girl of the press, has been on the front lines or in the foxholes of every major theater of war of the twentieth century (Madrid; Normandy; Buchenwald; Berlin; Algiers; Korea; Vietnam). She is recognized everywhere (she finds fame mortifying these days); lionized for her fearless, politically informed, objective reporting; and now, though fragile and in an accelerating decline, her goddess-like beauty long gone, her style of writing--unbiased reportage--obsolete in the age of New Journalism, is rediscovered with the reissue of her frontline journalism, and the about-to-be-published collection of her Pulitzer Prize-winning dispatches. The other, a young up-and-not-so-coming reporter in her twenties; a degree in media studies, a freelance editor who compiles A-lists (Ten Best / Ten Worst; What's In / What's Out) for a down-market magazine of a newspaper specializing in celebrity gossip, unexpectedly sent to write a feature on the venerated "doyenne of British journalists"--to get the dirt on her glittering Hollywood days, her many affairs and three marriages...What ensues is a high-stakes, high-risk battle of wit and wills as lives are shaken, secrets unearthed, and headlines blast (unconfirmed) "truths," with one newspaper--the spoiler--playing off against another in a ruthless, desperate grab for sensation and circulation.

Book excerpt: Mythodologies challenges the implied methodology in contemporary studies in the humanities. We claim, at times, that we gather facts or what we will call evidence, and from that form hypotheses and conclusions. Of course, we recognize that the sum total of evidence for any argument is beyond comprehension; therefore, we construct, and we claim, preliminary hypotheses, perhaps to organize the chaos of evidence, or perhaps simply to find it; we might then see (we claim) whether that evidence challenges our tentative hypotheses. Ideally, we could work this way. Yet the history of scholarship and our own practices suggest we do nothing of the kind. Rather, we work the way we teach our composition students to write: choose or construct a thesis, then invent the evidence to support it. This book has three parts, examining such methods and pseudo-methods of invention in medieval studies, bibliography, and editing. Part One, "Noster Chaucer," looks at examples in Chaucer studies, such as the notion that Chaucer wrote iambic pentameter, and the definition of a canon in Chaucer. "Our" Chaucer has, it seems, little to do with Chaucer himself, and in constructing this entity, Chaucerians are engaged largely in self-validation of their own tradition. Part Two, "Bibliography and Book History," consists of three studies in the field of bibliography: the recent rise in studies of annotations; the implications of presumably neutral terminology in editing, a case-study in cataloguing. Part Three, "Cacophonies: A Bibliographical Rondo," is a series of brief studies extending these critiques to other areas in the humanities. It seems not to matter what we talk about: meter, book history, the sex life of bonobos. In all of these discussions, we see the persistence of error, the intractability of uncritical assumptions, and the dominance of authority over evidence. TABLE OF CONTENTS // Part I. Book excerpt: In this ambitious volume, Yunfei Bai delves into the creative adaptations of classical Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan literary texts by four renowned nineteenth- and early twentieth-century authors in France and Argentina: Theophile Gautier, Stephane Mallarme, Victor Segalen, and Jorge Luis Borges. Without any knowledge of the source languages, the authors crafted their own French and Spanish retellings based on received translations of these Asian works. Rewriting the Orient not only explores the so far untapped translation-rewriting continuum to trace the pivotal role of Orientalism in the formation of a singular corpus of world literature that goes beyond the Anglophone canon, but also sheds light on a wide range of innovative discursive strategies that readily challenge traditional notions of cultural appropriation.

Book excerpt: The Reverend Phillips Brooks was undeniably one of the most popular preachers of Gilded Age America and the author of the beloved Christmas carol, 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.' However, very few critical studies of his life and work exist. In this insightful book, Gillis J. Harp places Brooks's religious thought in its proper historical, cultural, and ecclesiastical contexts while clarifying the sources of Brooks's inspiration. The result is a fuller, richer portrait of this luminous figure and of this transitional era in American protestantism.
