Book excerpt: This document is intended primarily as didactic material for use in training courses in aquaculture project formulation. It can also be read as a text in its own right by government administrators and planners, particularly in developing countries, and by commercial investors in aquaculture. The first part of the document contains a broad introduction to project formulation, describing the integration of aquaculture projects within development plans, the organization and management of project formulation projects, and the stages of the project cycle. It is not only important for projects to be satisfactorily integrated into the economy of the sub-sector, but also that those responsible for project formulation should be aware of the practical problems which may arise in project implementation. Preject formulation and implementation, therefore, are described briefly here as a single entity, consisting of twelve phases, and the more frequently occurring problems encountered in project implementation are described. Illustrations of three actua aquaculture projects are given to show the diversity which may be encountered by planners. The second part of the document is concerned only with the six phases of project formulation, encompassing project identification, preparation, and appraisal. The sequence of activities carried out within each phase are described within 17 steps, each including further activities or tasks. Drawing on the characteristics of these illustrative models particular attention is given to differences of approach between the public and private sectors.

Pillay The continuing rapid increases in aquaculture production world-wide raise fears of further environmental degradation of the aquatic environment. The second edition of this well-received book brings together and discusses the available information on all major environmental aspects of various aquaculture systems, providing a valuable aid to the preparation of environmental impact assessments of aquaculture projects and showing how potential environmental problems can be reduced or mitigated by sound management. Much new information is presented in this new edition, including details of the impact of genetically modified food products and a new chapter on the sustainability of aquaculture, which covers the definitions of sustainability and responsible aquaculture, environmental, economic, social and ethical aspects of sustainability and the concept of ecotechnology in fish farming. Aquaculture and the Environment, Second Edition is essential reading for all personnel working on fish farms and for those moving into the aquatic farm business. Environmental scientists, ecologists, conservationists, fish and shellfish biologist and all those involved in the preservation of aquatic environments will find much of great use and interest within the covers of this book. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies of this excellent and useful book on their shelves. Dr T. V. R. Pillay was formerly Programme Director, Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Book excerpt: Annotation Aquaculture provides an attractive alternative to capture fisheries where the majority of species are overexploited and an increased yield potential is unlikely. This document reviews the standards for water and fish product quality, looks at the parameters of greatest importance to aquaculture, and discusses the scientific basis for these standards. Containing information from current literature and government standards, it provides practical, cost-effective guidelines to determine whether the quality of the proposed source water will present a significant risk to the success of a project.

Book excerpt: These guidelines have been prepared for consultation by environmental assessors and finfish aquaculture project proponents to help ensure that relevant information & knowledge is incorporated early in the planning & design of a project and in the conduct of an environmental assessment. The introduction describes Environment Canada's mandate related to aquaculture projects. The subsequent guidelines relay the department's recommendations on information to be presented, potential environmental effects to be addressed, and mitigation measures which should be considered in the environmental assessment of each phase of a finfish aquaculture project. Sections 2 to 5 are specific to each of the individual project phases (site selection, facility design, site preparation & construction, operation & maintenance, decommissioning). Section 6 focusses on how the environment & changes in the environment can impact aquaculture facilities. The final section discusses impact prediction, verification, and follow-up plans.
