I show that the curriculum is not just a list of content of equal weight. There are key ideas that give meaning to the rest of the curriculum. I explain the concept of “metacontent” and show exactly how I apply it in detailed examples. o The first type of metacontent I explain is a set of systems principles that I share with students and discuss during every topic. These unifying principles avoid the feeling that biology is just a lot of facts to learn. o The second type is understanding understanding itself. I share a taxonomy of understanding that allows students to grasp what I expect of them in every topic. Rather than success criteria, which change for every topic, this framework gets to the heart of biological understanding and how to get there. I provide example sentences for each level of understanding, example questions I’ve asked to test my students’ understanding, and example answers my students have given. A way of seeing and being. Rather than a training manual with activities to follow, this book provides teachers with a new conception of teaching, learning, and acting together in the classroom. Yet, rather than being an academic book of just abstract theory, it thoroughly exemplifies all the ideas in practice from real lessons in real teaching contexts. Este libro es producto de 30 años de trabajo pedagógico por parte de Joel López-Pérez y y17 años de inmersión en la innovación educativa por parte de Susana Juárez-López, ambos comprometidos con la formación de investigadores al lado de Miguel Arenas. El Método Arenas (MA) utiliza las estrategias del PBL (Problem Based Learning) ligado a otras técnicas de aprendizaje grupales, como los grupos operativos de Pichón Riviere, y las Comunidades de Práctica (COPs) ampliamente estudiadas por Jean Lave y Etienne Wenger desde la última década del siglo XX, para hacer de las reuniones de discusión una experiencia óptima que fluye para hacer consciente el inconsciente y generar cambios en la mente de los participantes. El componente educativo fundamental de este revolucionario método es el acto consciente, ya que las cosas adquieren importancia para nosotros cuando somos conscientes de su existencia, que es el pensamiento central en los grupos que han adoptado las formas de preceder propuestas por Miguel Arenas.

And some teachers do, engaging with their students' ideas in ways that make learning collaborative. In Segregation by Experience, the authors set out to study how Latinx children exercise agency in their classrooms-children who don't often have access to these kinds of learning environments. The authors filmed a classroom in which an elementary school teacher, Ms. Bailey, made her students active participants. But when the authors showed videos of these black and brown children wandering around the classroom, being consulted for their ideas, observing and participating by their own initiative, reading snuggled up, shouting out ideas and stories without raising their hands, and influencing what they learned about, the response was surprising. Teachers admired Ms. Bailey but didn't think her practices would work with their black and brown students. Parents of color-many of them immigrants-liked many of the practices, but worried that they would endanger or compromise their children. Young children thought they were terrible, telling the authors that learning was about being quiet, still, and compliant. The children in the film were behaving badly. Segregation by Experience asks us to consider which children's unique voices are encouraged-and which are being disciplined through educational experience"--
