Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionals involving both volume and surface energies have a number of applications ranging from Computer Vision to Fracture Mechanics. In order to tackle numerical and dynamical problems linked to such functionals many approximations by functionals defined on smooth functions have been proposed (using high-order singular perturbations, finite-difference or non-local energies, etc.) The purpose of this book is to present a global approach to these approximations using the theory of gamma-convergence and of special functions of bounded variation. The book is directed to PhD students and researchers in calculus of variations, interested in approximation problems with possible applications.

Book excerpt: The present collection is the very first contribution of this type in the field of sparse recovery. Compressed sensing is one of the important facets of the broader concept presented in the book, which by now has made connections with other branches such as mathematical imaging, inverse problems, numerical analysis and simulation. The book consists of four lecture notes of courses given at the Summer School on "Theoretical Foundations and Numerical Methods for Sparse Recovery" held at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics in Linz, Austria, in September 2009. This unique collection will be of value for a broad community and may serve as a textbook for graduate courses. Book excerpt: The explosion of data arising from rapid advances in communication, sensing and computational power has concentrated research effort on more advanced techniques for the representation, processing, analysis and interpretation of data sets. In view of these exciting developments, the program “Mathematics and Computation in Imaging Science and Information Processing” was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, from July to December 2003 and in August 2004 to promote and facilitate multidisciplinary research in the area. As part of the program, a series of tutorial lectures were conducted by international experts on a wide variety of topics in mathematical image, signal and information processing. This compiled volume contains survey articles by the tutorial speakers, all specialists in their respective areas. They collectively provide graduate students and researchers new to the field a unique and valuable introduction to a range of important topics at the frontiers of current research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of 'shape' is at the heart of image processing and computer vision, yet researchers still have some way to go to replicate the human brain's ability to extrapolate meaning from the most basic of outlines. This volume reflects the advances of the last decade, which have also opened up tough new challenges in image processing. Today's applications require flexible models as well as efficient, mathematically justified algorithms that allow data processing within an acceptable timeframe. Examining important topics in continuous-scale and discrete modeling, as well as in modern algorithms, the book is the product of a key seminar focused on innovations in the field. It is a thorough introduction to the latest technology, especially given the tutorial style of a number of chapters. It also succeeds in identifying promising avenues for future research. The topics covered include mathematical morphology, skeletonization, statistical shape modeling, continuous-scale shape models such as partial differential equations and the theory of discrete shape descriptors. Some authors highlight new areas of enquiry such as partite skeletons, multi-component shapes, deformable shape models, and the use of distance fields. Combining the latest theoretical analysis with cutting-edge applications, this book will attract both academics and engineers.

Book excerpt: At the summer school in Pisa in September 1996, Luigi Ambrosio and Norman Dancer each gave a course on the geometric problem of evolution of a surface by mean curvature, and degree theory with applications to PDEs respectively. This self-contained presentation accessible to PhD students bridged the gap between standard courses and advanced research on these topics. The resulting book is divided accordingly into 2 parts, and neatly illustrates the 2-way interaction of problems and methods. Each of the courses is augmented and complemented by additional short chapters by other authors describing current research problems and results.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with digital image processing techniques that use partial differential equations (PDEs) for the task of image 'inpainting', an artistic term for virtual image restoration or interpolation, whereby missing or occluded parts in images are completed based on information provided by intact parts. Computer graphic designers, artists and photographers have long used manual inpainting to restore damaged paintings or manipulate photographs. Today, mathematicians apply powerful methods based on PDEs to automate this task. This book introduces the mathematical concept of PDEs for virtual image restoration. It gives the full picture, from the first modelling steps originating in Gestalt theory and arts restoration to the analysis of resulting PDE models, numerical realisation and real-world application. This broad approach also gives insight into functional analysis, variational calculus, optimisation and numerical analysis and will appeal to researchers and graduate students in mathematics with an interest in image processing and mathematical analysis.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications VARIATIONAL AND FREE BOUNDARY PROBLEMS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries. " The aim of the workshop was to highlight new methods, directions and problems in variational and free boundary theory, with a concentration on novel applications of variational methods to applied problems. We thank R. Fosdick, M. E. Gurtin, W. -M. Ni and L. A. Peletier for organizing the year-long program and, especially, J. Sprock for co-organizing the meeting and co-editing these proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation whose financial support made the workshop possible. Avner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE In a free boundary one seeks to find a solution u to a partial differential equation in a domain, a part r of its boundary of which is unknown. Thus both u and r must be determined. In addition to the standard boundary conditions on the un known domain, an additional condition must be prescribed on the free boundary. A classical example is the Stefan problem of melting of ice; here the temperature sat isfies the heat equation in the water region, and yet this region itself (or rather the ice-water interface) is unknown and must be determined together with the tempera ture within the water. Some free boundary problems lend themselves to variational formulation.
