Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a review of the GPSS simulation program for air traffic control (ATC) communications, its structure, validation, and applications. The model, constructed using ATC communications data from the New York Center, was checked against ATC communications data from Houston with excellent results. Studies of the applications of the model are described with respect to communications capacity and queuing, the effects of reducing the number of transmissions per transaction, the effects of tone-bursts of different duration, the sensitivity of communication responses to changes in various input variables, etc. The construction of general simulations for sector types, as opposed to individual sectors, is described. (This work may be of special significance to the simulations of oceanic communications performance). The problems, and some of the progress, in combining sector functions into networks analogous to a communications center are discussed. The multi-dimensional aspects of sector communications are simplified through the construction of new indices. Queuing time analyses and forecasting for ATC communications are reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: A computer simulation model designed to mimic second-by-second behavior of air/ground communications in an air traffic control sector is described. The model can be used to simulate any one of nine sector functions (e.g., high-altitude enroute, low-altitude transitional, radar-arrival control, etc.). The model exists as a computer program written in the GPSS V and FORTRAN IV languages. Input variables include aircraft arrival rate into sector, distribution of transmission length, distribution of number of transmissions in an air/ground exchange, etc. Response variables include sector aircraft loading, channel utilization, and communications delay. Model output can be obtained in the form of time series (e.g., minute-by-minute averages of channel utilization) exhibiting the dynamics of sector communications or simple averages of such series taken over several hours of simulated time. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the construction, validation, and application of a simulation model for air traffic control (ATC) communications. The model is based upon an extensive statistical analysis of voice communications data gathered over the New York area during a busy 2-hour period. The structure of the simulation model is discussed along with the associated GPSS V program. The input parameters are outlined, and various master tables and equations are employed to capsulate the information provided by the earlier statistical analyses. Methods for validating the simulation model are described for particular sectors and sector functions. A new statistical testing procedure for comparing both simulated and historical time series traces is evoked. The responses of major interest are the aircraft loading, channel utilization, and communications queueing, the last of which can only be secured through simulation.

Book excerpt: This volume is a compendium of papers presented during an Advanced Seminar on Air Traffic Control (ATC) that took place in Capri, Italy on October 28-31, 1991. The Seminar was' organized by the Progetto Finalizzato Trasporti of the Italian National Research Council. The papers presented in the Seminar dealt with a wide range of topics which are currently important in ATC. For example, there were papers on such subjects as recent developments in primary and secondary radar technologies, communications networks and protocols, and the future uses of satellite-based communications, navigation and surveillance in ATC. However, all the papers contained in the volume were selected exclusively from that set of papers that addressed some aspect of the main area of emphasis in the Seminar, namely massive data-processing requirements and computer intensive problems in ATC. Data-processing requirements in A TC have grown enormously over the years. Obviously, the rapid increase in air traffic volumes in most of the world is one of the factors that has contributed to this growth. However, two other developments have contributed much more significantly: first, the ATC system now collects (mostly automatically) immensely more "information per flight" than in the past; and, second, as the system's complexity increases and as it becomes more tightly interconnected geographically, so grows the need to communicate, process and "filter" the data presented to the system's various components.

Book excerpt: The TATSS Project's goal was to develop a design for computer software that would support the attainment of the following objectives for the air traffic simulation model: (1) Full freedom of movement for each aircraft object in the simulation model. Each aircraft object may follow any designated flight plan or flight path necessary as required by the experiment under consideration. (2) Object position precision up to +/- 3 meters vertically and +/- 15 meters horizontally. (3) Aircraft maneuvering in three space with the object position precision identified above. (4) Air traffic control operations and procedures. (5) Radar, communication, navaid, and landing aid performance. (6) Weather. (7) Ground obstructions and terrain. (8) Detection and recording of separation violations. (9) Measures of performance including deviations from flight plans, air space violations, air traffic control messages per aircraft, and traditional temporal based measures. Rogers, Ralph V. This book was released on 1971 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes an effort to analyze and model by means of a nonreal-time simulation programming language, in this case GPSS, some of the characteristics of an air traffic control (ATC) air/ground/air voice communications channel. The report describes the functional entities or parameters. Furthermore, a comparison is made between the modeling outputs and real field derived measures of system output or performance. The conclusions are that this type of modeling and analysis can be a powerful and efficient tool for ATC simulation and system analysis provided that the model parameters adequately coincide with real system parameters and that real operational data are used to quantify the dependent and independent variables in the model. Book excerpt: The report examines the statistical characteristics of voice communications data recorded over a busy two-hour period covering the 101 sectors of the New York ARTCC. This study is the first stage of a larger effort to construct a simulation model descriptive of the aircraft flow and communication performance surrounding a major airport. The approach has been to get the data to speak for themselves prior to any extensive effort to construct a large simulation model. The structure of communications transactions, transmissions, and message elements are analyzed, and the frequencies and durations of these components are described by statistical models. Channel utilization is defined and empirical equations identifying sector structure variables of greatest influence are constructed and compared. (Modified author abstract).
