Book excerpt: Methods of global analysis and stochastic analysis are most often applied in mathematical physics as separate entities, thus forming important directions in the field. However, while combination of the two subject areas is rare, it is fundamental for the consideration of a broader class of problems. This book develops methods of Global Analysis and Stochastic Analysis such that their combination allows one to have a more or less common treatment for areas of mathematical physics that traditionally are considered as divergent and requiring different methods of investigation. Global and Stochastic Analysis with Applications to Mathematical Physics covers branches of mathematics that are currently absent in monograph form. Through the demonstration of new topics of investigation and results, both in traditional and more recent problems, this book offers a fresh perspective on ordinary and stochastic differential equations and inclusions (in particular, given in terms of Nelson's mean derivatives) on linear spaces and manifolds. Topics covered include classical mechanics on non-linear configuration spaces, problems of statistical and quantum physics, and hydrodynamics. A self-contained book that provides a large amount of preliminary material and recent results which will serve to be a useful introduction to the subject and a valuable resource for further research. It will appeal to researchers, graduate and PhD students working in global analysis, stochastic analysis and mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: This book is the first in monographic literature giving a common treatment to three areas of applications of Global Analysis in Mathematical Physics previously considered quite distant from each other, namely, differential geometry applied to classical mechanics, stochastic differential geometry used in quantum and statistical mechanics, and infinite-dimensional differential geometry fundamental for hydrodynamics. The unification of these topics is made possible by considering the Newton equation or its natural generalizations and analogues as a fundamental equation of motion. New general geometric and stochastic methods of investigation are developed, and new results on existence, uniqueness, and qualitative behavior of solutions are obtained.

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book entitled Analysis on Riemannian Manifolds and Some Problems of Mathematical Physics was published by Voronezh Univer sity Press in 1989. For its English edition, the book has been substantially revised and expanded. In particular, new material has been added to Sections 19 and 20. I am grateful to Viktor L. Ginzburg for his hard work on the transla tion and for writing Appendix F, and to Tomasz Zastawniak for his numerous suggestions. My special thanks go to the referee for his valuable remarks on the theory of stochastic processes. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the support of the AMS fSU Aid Fund and the International Science Foundation (Grant NZBOOO), which made possible my work on some of the new results included in the English edition of the book. Voronezh, Russia Yuri Gliklikh September, 1995 Preface to the Russian Edition The present book is apparently the first in monographic literature in which a common treatment is given to three areas of global analysis previously consid ered quite distant from each other, namely, differential geometry and classical mechanics, stochastic differential geometry and statistical and quantum me chanics, and infinite-dimensional differential geometry of groups of diffeomor phisms and hydrodynamics. The unification of these topics under the cover of one book appears, however, quite natural, since the exposition is based on a geometrically invariant form of the Newton equation and its analogs taken as a fundamental law of motion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global analysis is the analysis on manifolds. Since the middle of the sixties there exists a highly elaborated setting if the underlying manifold is compact, evidence of which can be found in index theory, spectral geometry, the theory of harmonic maps, many applications to mathematical physics on closed manifolds like gauge theory, Seiberg-Witten theory, etc. If the underlying manifold is open, i.e. non-compact and without boundary, then most of the foundations and of the great achievements fail. Elliptic operators are no longer Fredholm, the analytical and topological indexes are not defined, the spectrum of self-adjoint elliptic operators is no longer discrete, functional spaces strongly depend on the operators involved and the data from geometry, many embedding and module structure theorems do not hold, manifolds of maps are not defined, etc. It is the goal of this new book to provide serious foundations for global analysis on open manifolds, to discuss the difficulties and special features which come from the openness and to establish many results and applications on this basis.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a number of research-expository articles that appeared in the Bulletin of the AMS between 1979 and 1984 and that address the general area of nonlinear functional analysis and global analysis and their applications. The central theme concerns qualitative methods in the study of nonlinear problems arising in applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and geometry. Since these articles first appeared, the methods and ideas they describe have been applied in an ever-widening array of applications. Readers will find this collection useful, as it brings together a range of influential papers by some of the leading researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: This distinctive volume presents a clear, rigorous grounding in modern nonlinear integrable dynamics theory and applications in mathematical physics, and an introduction to timely leading-edge developments in the field — including some innovations by the authors themselves — that have not appeared in any other book. The exposition begins with an introduction to modern integrable dynamical systems theory, treating such topics as Liouville-Arnold and Mischenko-Fomenko integrability. This sets the stage for such topics as new formulations of the gradient-holonomic algorithm for Lax integrability, novel treatments of classical integration by quadratures, Lie-algebraic characterizations of integrability, and recent results on tensor Poisson structures. Of particular note is the development via spectral reduction of a generalized de Rham-Hodge theory, related to Delsarte-Lions operators, leading to new Chern type classes useful for integrability analysis. Also included are elements of quantum mathematics along with applications to Whitham systems, gauge theories, hadronic string models, and a supplement on fundamental differential-geometric concepts making this volume essentially self-contained.This book is ideal as a reference and guide to new directions in research for advanced students and researchers interested in the modern theory and applications of integrable (especially infinite-dimensional) dynamical systems.

Lately p-adic numbers have attracted a great deal of attention in modern theoretical physics as a promising new approach for describing the non-Archimedean geometry of space-time at small distances. This is the first book to deal with applications of p-adic numbers in theoretical and mathematical physics. It gives an elementary and thoroughly written introduction to p-adic numbers and p-adic analysis with great numbers of examples as well as applications of p-adic numbers in classical mechanics, dynamical systems, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, quantum field theory and string theory.

This book was released on 2011-07-30 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to give a rigorous and complete treatment of various topics from harmonic analysis with a strong emphasis on symplectic invariance properties, which are often ignored or underestimated in the time-frequency literature. The topics that are addressed include (but are not limited to) the theory of the Wigner transform, the uncertainty principle (from the point of view of symplectic topology), Weyl calculus and its symplectic covariance, Shubin’s global theory of pseudo-differential operators, and Feichtinger’s theory of modulation spaces. Several applications to time-frequency analysis and quantum mechanics are given, many of them concurrent with ongoing research. For instance, a non-standard pseudo-differential calculus on phase space where the main role is played by “Bopp operators” (also called “Landau operators” in the literature) is introduced and studied. This calculus is closely related to both the Landau problem and to the deformation quantization theory of Flato and Sternheimer, of which it gives a simple pseudo-differential formulation where Feichtinger’s modulation spaces are key actors. This book is primarily directed towards students or researchers in harmonic analysis (in the broad sense) and towards mathematical physicists working in quantum mechanics. It can also be read with profit by researchers in time-frequency analysis, providing a valuable complement to the existing literature on the topic. A certain familiarity with Fourier analysis (in the broad sense) and introductory functional analysis (e.g. the elementary theory of distributions) is assumed. Otherwise, the book is largely self-contained and includes an extensive list of references.
