Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides recent results on the stochastic approximation of systems by weak convergence techniques. General and particular schemes of proofs for average, diffusion, and Poisson approximations of stochastic systems are presented, allowing one to simplify complex systems and obtain numerically tractable models. The systems discussed in the book include stochastic additive functionals, dynamical systems, stochastic integral functionals, increment processes and impulsive processes. All these systems are switched by Markov and semi-Markov processes whose phase space is considered in asymptotic split and merging schemes. Most of the results from semi-Markov processes are new and presented for the first time in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial risk management has become a popular practice amongst financial institutions to protect against the adverse effects of uncertainty caused by fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rates, commodity prices, and equity prices. New financial instruments and mathematical techniques are continuously developed and introduced in financial practice. These techniques are being used by an increasing number of firms, traders and financial risk managers across various industries. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods confronts the many issues and controversies, and explains the fundamental concepts that underpin financial risk management. Provides a comprehensive introduction to the core topics of risk and financial management. Adopts a pragmatic approach, focused on computational, rather than just theoretical, methods. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in financial risk management Includes coverage of utility theory, probability, options and derivatives, stochastic volatility and value at risk. Suitable for students of risk, mathematical finance, and financial risk management, and finance practitioners. Includes extensive reference lists, applications and suggestions for further reading. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods is ideally suited to both students of mathematical finance with little background in economics and finance, and students of financial risk management, as well as finance practitioners requiring a clearer understanding of the mathematical and computational methods they use every day. It combines the required level of rigor, to support the theoretical developments, with a practical flavour through many examples and applications.

Book excerpt: These notes represent our summary of much of the recent research that has been done in recent years on approximations and bounds that have been developed for compound distributions and related quantities which are of interest in insurance and other areas of application in applied probability. The basic technique employed in the derivation of many bounds is induc tive, an approach that is motivated by arguments used by Sparre-Andersen (1957) in connection with a renewal risk model in insurance. This technique is both simple and powerful, and yields quite general results. The bounds themselves are motivated by the classical Lundberg exponential bounds which apply to ruin probabilities, and the connection to compound dis tributions is through the interpretation of the ruin probability as the tail probability of a compound geometric distribution. The initial exponential bounds were given in Willmot and Lin (1994), followed by the nonexpo nential generalization in Willmot (1994). Other related work on approximations for compound distributions and applications to various problems in insurance in particular and applied probability in general is also discussed in subsequent chapters. The results obtained or the arguments employed in these situations are similar to those for the compound distributions, and thus we felt it useful to include them in the notes. In many cases we have included exact results, since these are useful in conjunction with the bounds and approximations developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk theory, which deals with stochastic models of an insurance business, is a classical application of probability theory. The fundamental problem in risk theory is to investigate the ruin possibility of the risk business. Traditionally the occurrence of the claims is described by a Poisson process and the cost of the claims by a sequence of random variables. This book is a treatise of risk theory with emphasis on models where the occurrence of the claims is described by more general point processes than the Poisson process, such as renewal processes, Cox processes and general stationary point processes. In the Cox case the possibility of risk fluctuation is explicitly taken into account. The presentation is based on modern probabilistic methods rather than on analytic methods. The theory is accompanied with discussions on practical evaluation of ruin probabilities and statistical estimation. Many numerical illustrations of the results are given.

Book excerpt: Ruin Probabilities: Smoothness, Bounds, Supermartingale Approach deals with continuous-time risk models and covers several aspects of risk theory. The first of them is the smoothness of the survival probabilities. In particular, the book provides a detailed investigation of the continuity and differentiability of the infinite-horizon and finite-horizon survival probabilities for different risk models. Next, it gives some possible applications of the results concerning the smoothness of the survival probabilities. Additionally, the book introduces the supermartingale approach, which generalizes the martingale one introduced by Gerber, to get upper exponential bounds for the infinite-horizon ruin probabilities in some generalizations of the classical risk model with risky investments. Provides new original results Detailed investigation of the continuity and differentiability of the infinite-horizon and finite-horizon survival probabilities, as well as possible applications of these results An excellent supplement to current textbooks and monographs in risk theory Contains a comprehensive list of useful references

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of the book is to show how a viscosity approach can be used to tackle control problems in insurance. The problems covered are the maximization of survival probability as well as the maximization of dividends in the classical collective risk model. The authors consider the possibility of controlling the risk process by reinsurance as well as by investments. They show that optimal value functions are characterized as either the unique or the smallest viscosity solution of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation; they also study the structure of the optimal strategies and show how to find them. The viscosity approach was widely used in control problems related to mathematical finance but until quite recently it was not used to solve control problems related to actuarial mathematical science. This book is designed to familiarize the reader on how to use this approach. The intended audience is graduate students as well as researchers in this area.

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to studies of quasi-stationary phenomena in nonlinearly perturbed stochastic systems. New methods of asymptotic analysis for nonlinearly perturbed stochastic processes based on new types of asymptotic expansions for perturbed renewal equation and recurrence algorithms for construction of asymptotic expansions for Markov type processes with absorption are presented. Asymptotic expansions are given in mixed ergodic (for processes) and large deviation theorems (for absorption times) for nonlinearly perturbed regenerative processes, semi-Markov processes, and Markov chains. Applications to analysis of quasi-stationary phenomena in nonlinearly perturbed queueing systems, population dynamics and epidemic models, and for risk processes are presented. The book also contains an extended bibliography of works in the area. It is an essential reference for theoretical and applied researchers in the field of stochastic processes and their applications and may be also useful for doctoral and advanced undergraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the impact of the recent financial crises, more attention must be given to new models in finance rejecting “Black-Scholes-Samuelson” assumptions leading to what is called non-Gaussian finance. With the growing importance of Solvency II, Basel II and III regulatory rules for insurance companies and banks, value at risk (VaR) – one of the most popular risk indicator techniques plays a fundamental role in defining appropriate levels of equities. The aim of this book is to show how new VaR techniques can be built more appropriately for a crisis situation. VaR methodology for non-Gaussian finance looks at the importance of VaR in standard international rules for banks and insurance companies; gives the first non-Gaussian extensions of VaR and applies several basic statistical theories to extend classical results of VaR techniques such as the NP approximation, the Cornish-Fisher approximation, extreme and a Pareto distribution. Several non-Gaussian models using Copula methodology, Lévy processes along with particular attention to models with jumps such as the Merton model are presented; as are the consideration of time homogeneous and non-homogeneous Markov and semi-Markov processes and for each of these models. Contents 1. Use of Value-at-Risk (VaR) Techniques for Solvency II, Basel II and III. 2. Classical Value-at-Risk (VaR) Methods. 3. VaR Extensions from Gaussian Finance to Non-Gaussian Finance. 4. New VaR Methods of Non-Gaussian Finance. 5. Non-Gaussian Finance: Semi-Markov Models.
