Book excerpt: These notes represent our summary of much of the recent research that has been done in recent years on approximations and bounds that have been developed for compound distributions and related quantities which are of interest in insurance and other areas of application in applied probability. The basic technique employed in the derivation of many bounds is induc tive, an approach that is motivated by arguments used by Sparre-Andersen (1957) in connection with a renewal risk model in insurance. This technique is both simple and powerful, and yields quite general results. The bounds themselves are motivated by the classical Lundberg exponential bounds which apply to ruin probabilities, and the connection to compound dis tributions is through the interpretation of the ruin probability as the tail probability of a compound geometric distribution. The initial exponential bounds were given in Willmot and Lin (1994), followed by the nonexpo nential generalization in Willmot (1994). Other related work on approximations for compound distributions and applications to various problems in insurance in particular and applied probability in general is also discussed in subsequent chapters. The results obtained or the arguments employed in these situations are similar to those for the compound distributions, and thus we felt it useful to include them in the notes. In many cases we have included exact results, since these are useful in conjunction with the bounds and approximations developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial risk management has become a popular practice amongst financial institutions to protect against the adverse effects of uncertainty caused by fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rates, commodity prices, and equity prices. New financial instruments and mathematical techniques are continuously developed and introduced in financial practice. These techniques are being used by an increasing number of firms, traders and financial risk managers across various industries. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods confronts the many issues and controversies, and explains the fundamental concepts that underpin financial risk management. Provides a comprehensive introduction to the core topics of risk and financial management. Adopts a pragmatic approach, focused on computational, rather than just theoretical, methods. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in financial risk management Includes coverage of utility theory, probability, options and derivatives, stochastic volatility and value at risk. Suitable for students of risk, mathematical finance, and financial risk management, and finance practitioners. Includes extensive reference lists, applications and suggestions for further reading. Risk and Financial Management: Mathematical and Computational Methods is ideally suited to both students of mathematical finance with little background in economics and finance, and students of financial risk management, as well as finance practitioners requiring a clearer understanding of the mathematical and computational methods they use every day. It combines the required level of rigor, to support the theoretical developments, with a practical flavour through many examples and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides recent results on the stochastic approximation of systems by weak convergence techniques. General and particular schemes of proofs for average, diffusion, and Poisson approximations of stochastic systems are presented, allowing one to simplify complex systems and obtain numerically tractable models. The systems discussed in the book include stochastic additive functionals, dynamical systems, stochastic integral functionals, increment processes and impulsive processes. All these systems are switched by Markov and semi-Markov processes whose phase space is considered in asymptotic split and merging schemes. Most of the results from semi-Markov processes are new and presented for the first time in this book.

Book excerpt: Ruin Probabilities: Smoothness, Bounds, Supermartingale Approach deals with continuous-time risk models and covers several aspects of risk theory. The first of them is the smoothness of the survival probabilities. In particular, the book provides a detailed investigation of the continuity and differentiability of the infinite-horizon and finite-horizon survival probabilities for different risk models. Next, it gives some possible applications of the results concerning the smoothness of the survival probabilities. Additionally, the book introduces the supermartingale approach, which generalizes the martingale one introduced by Gerber, to get upper exponential bounds for the infinite-horizon ruin probabilities in some generalizations of the classical risk model with risky investments. - Provides new original results - Detailed investigation of the continuity and differentiability of the infinite-horizon and finite-horizon survival probabilities, as well as possible applications of these results - An excellent supplement to current textbooks and monographs in risk theory - Contains a comprehensive list of useful references

Book excerpt: Insurance Planning Models: Price Competition and Regulation of Financial Stability is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the secrets of internal organization of the modern general insurance business. Many people know that it is subject to intensive state regulation, whereby the purpose is to maintain long-term efficiency, honesty, security and stability in the interest and for the protection of policyholders. However, except for knowing that the insurance system is regulated by intensive calculations, that the insurance companies have different positions on the market, that they pursue different goals and even compete with each other, and that one of the tools of this competition is the policy price, not so many people know how to achieve these deserving goals. In developing quantitative recommendations and directives to competing insurers, regulators rely on certain models. In the 1900s, such models were proposed. They were useful for an insight into the probabilistic nature of the insurance process, but not for direct application to practically meaningful problems of insurance regulation. This book is your guide to the rigorously constructed long-term dynamic models with the aim to improve regulatory methods and develop quantitative recommendations using both analytical calculations and computer simulation. It is addressed to a wide range of readers, including interested policyholders, economists whose interest lies in insurance management and regulation, and mathematicians wishing to expand the scope of application for their knowledge. This book is devoted to certain issues that are either not sufficiently presented, or even absent in the literature. It is an attempt to penetrate from the standpoint of mathematical modeling into the goals which face insurance regulators and contending company managers for preventing insolvencies, or even crises pertinent to badly regulated complex reflexive systems. It offers rigorous probabilistic models of long-term insurance business based on the laws of mass phenomena. They mitigate deficiencies of oversimplified risk models. The book presents advances in probabilistic techniques designed to seek quantitative, rather than qualitative, directives and recommendations regarding safe control aiming to achieve different business goals.

Book excerpt: The text is a treatment of classical and modern ruin probability theory. Some of the topics are Lundberg's inequality, the Cramer-Lundberg approximation, exact solutions, other approximations (for example, for heavy-tailed claim size distributions), finite horizon ruin probabilities, extensions of the classical compound Poisson model to allow for reserve-dependent premiums, Markov-modulation or periodicity. Special features of the book are the emphasis on change of measure techniques, phase-type distributions as computational vehicle and the connection to other applied probability areas like queueing theory.
