In addition to describing the fundamental theories of resonators such as geometrical optics, diffraction, and polarisation the characteristics of all important resonator schemes and their calculation are presented. Experimental examples, practical problems and a collection of measurement techniques support the comprehensive treatment of the subject. Optical Resonators is the only book currently available that provides a comprehensive overview of the the subject. Combined with the structure of the text and the autonomous nature of the chapters this work will be as suitable for those new to the field as it will be invaluable to specialists conducting research.

The workshop was designed to initiate a dialogue among specialists in resonator and cavity design from NATO and CP countries. The papers fall under the headings of physics and theory, phase conjugation, optics, and optimization of design. Topics include nonorthogonal optical modes and resonators; thermal lensing in Kerr-lens modelocked solid-state lasers; beam divergency studies on a long pulse XeCl excimer laser; highly efficient high-average power Nd:YAG laser with a passive Q-switch; and creation of channels into Ti:sapphire waveguiding layers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a review paper based on recent literature in the areas of spherical mirror resonators and optical mode selection. The Fabry-Perot interferometer with spherical mirrors has been widely used as a laser resonator. The modes of oscillation, diffraction losses and resonance condition are determined for the confocal resonator, i.e. a resonator with mirror spacing equal to the common radius of curvature of the mirrors. Resonators with nonconfocal spacing and mirrors of different curvature are described in terms of an equivalent confocal resonator. It is shown that any spherical mirror resonator may be characterized as high loss or low loss according to the geometry of the resonator. Lasers using spherical mirror resonators will oscillate in several modes simultaneously, because of the interaction of the broad emission line of the laser active medium and the closely spaced mode resonances. For many applications a single frequency output is desirable, and methods must be employed to suppress unwanted oscillations. Unwanted modes may be suppressed by placing absorbing materials within the resonator and by adding devices to the resonator which act as bandpass filters.

Book excerpt: This text examines the technology behind the plethora of modern industrial and domestic technologies which incorporate micro-optics eg. CDs, cameras, automated manufacturing systems, mobile communications etc. It includes a simple but comprehensive introduction to micro-optical developments design, and an overview of fabrication and replication technology. The theoretical, practical and industrial developments in micro-scale optoelectronics continue apace in the late 1990s. In this book, a distinguished group of physicists and engineers describe the current state of research and applications in micro-optics. It provides the theoretical background and an overview of current technology, with several chapters taking a deeper look at specific recent applications and future trends. The book concentrates on diffractive and refractive micro- optical elements, such as lenses, fan-out gratings, optimized phase elements and polarisers. Sections are included on the simulation and optimization of design for micro-optics and subsequently the efficient transformation from design to real optical elements, using techniques such as e-beam writing, laser beam writing, lithography, etching and thin film deposition.

This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.
